After 9-11 I was one of the National guardsmen at the airport in Vegas. I got to meet a lot of interesting people, including MC Hammer, Mohamed Ali, and the Iron Sheik. The Iron Sheik was walking through while my battle buddy and I were standing between the delta checkpoint and monorail; he saw us and came over and talked to us for about a half hour and left us with signed photos. Dude was totally chill, and really seemed to enjoy hanging out with two soldiers standing at their checkpoint. R.I.P. Brother.

I think the best thing for me was the level of love and respect they all had for Gene. He got away with ribbing them and saying things that would have gotten an average person punched. They knew how good he made them look and how easy he made that part of their job. The guy is the best 1 - on 1 interviewer in the history of pro wrestling. There were better partnerships and better in-ring announce guys, but NOBODY beat Jean 1 to 1.
@emanuelmartinez7267
2 жыл бұрын
I dont disagree with you about the love he got but I don't think he "got away with it" cause he was one of the boys you know? Like I was in the army and we would constantly go out of our way to annoy each other, play pranks and whenever we would bump into someone from a different branch we'd heckle the hell out of each other but we had zero tolerance for regular civilians messing with one of our guys. I remember we was in a bar and some local guys was talking shit to a recent national guard recruit saying he was a weekend warrior and a toy soldier. We made it very clear to them that unless they actually have the balls to enlist and endure the training you don't have the right to show that guy disrespect, yeah we joke about his branch but he's still our brother. Then we bought the guy a few beers and proceeded to talk shit about him needing "real" soldiers to save his ass lol I imagine being a pro wrestler back then was like that

After his daughter was murdered, he went off the deep end with drugs and morphed into being the Iron Sheik 24/7 as himself. I had a connection to greatness many years ago. Back in the Sgt. Slaughter/Iron Sheik days, the WWF came to my town. A local radio personality who was a friend was hired as ring announcer. After the show, he told my wife and I that the wrestlers were playing cards and perusing men's magazines between matches. He also said that of all of them, the nicest and most respectful was the Iron Sheik. He proclaimed his love of the USA, and his appreciation for the people of the USA giving him a chance to be a successful athletic entertainer. He was a really good guy, God rest his soul.

The Iron Sheik was walking through while my battle buddy and I were standing between the delta checkpoint and monorail; he saw us and came over and talked to us for about a half hour and left us with signed photos.
@emanuelmartinez7267

Indeed, your comment agreed 100%. The changes in the business now would never compare with the same experience we had when the WWF aired on T.V. back then.

You almost made me cry.. those are my memories too. I hate being old now but I wouldn't trade being able to be a kid during those times for ANYTHING in the world. Such great memories.
Sheik was laughing that is awesome. To this day I still believed he never got out of character.

People close to him say before his daughter was murdered, Iron Sheik was just a character for the camera and in the ring, but he was still Ali Waziri outside the ring. After his daughter was murdered, he went off the deep end with drugs and morphed into being the Iron Sheik 24/7 as himself. Sad story, but he seems to have finally cleaned up enough and will be 81 in a few months from this post. Considering most wrestlers die young, Sheiky surviving into his 80s is amazing.

@@redrumloamy he RIP now. I read about the tragedy of his daughter it’s very sad and hard breaking
Gene was, and still remains one of the funiest Americans ever. He was every bit, and sometimes even better than the actual bout. Comic genius. Essential to the success of the whole shebang.
Half, if not most, of these wrestlers are now gone.........the 80's seemed like yesterday

This was great. To me the best era of wrestling. All these great wrestlers, managers, announcers and add Mean Gene Okerlund and Howard "The Fink Finkel, what more could you want?
They all really seemed to like each other and really got along well. I grew up watching all these absolute gems. I was so lucky!
The Iron Sheik doing the roll call at the end and everybody partaking in the fooleru had me dying 😂😂😂😂
Mean gene interviews were great in the wwf. Especially when he interviews bad guys.

These are great!
It makes me happy they had a lot of fun making these. Looks like they’re all there to have a good time and goof around.

In the late 70s WWF did a zet of matchws on Staten Island. POs from my precinct were part of security. One of my buddies came tonthe stationhouse after and was telling how, back in tje dressing room, George the Animal Steele, Ivan Putsky, and I don't remember who else, were playing cards and discussing stock market, and 2 guys who werecsuppised to be bitter enemies were talking about shsring a ride to Rochester with Bruno Sammartino. My buddy said it was like a college frat house, except for the wrestling tights...

Wow. So many legends in this clip that have crossed over. I'm glad we have the opportunity to go back and relive these great moments. ❤
Iron Sheik is so underrated when he talks the talk 🤣🤣🤣
Rest In Peace to The Iron Sheik. He'll really be Missed. 🙂💪🙏🙏
I will now never forget Mean Gene gimping and making Sgt. Slaughter giggle. Thank you for this.
The sheik saying the turkey looks like Hulk Hogan always gets me
Always a joy watching these guys break character
I’m in tears right now.
I will have that quote stuck in my head forever .. .. .."" PASS THE F**KING POTATOES "".. .. ..
Gene Mean, the best to ever do it!

Love the ending. How many of those past superstars have passed on. Iron sheik rocks.
Can’t we all just lighten up again like these guys ?
This is what is missing in wrestling today...fun. Today's talent take the stuff too seriously. Sometimes you just need to have a laugh. RIP Mean Gene.
This 5 minutes is better than the combined last 25 years of WWE

The look that terrified turkey gave the audience was too much!😂
Gene losing his shit is always hilarious
Gene Okerlund was the true GOAT of wrestling. How he kept a serious face through the thousands of interviews, ranging from dog s*it to true classics, I'll never know.
3:45 that was one smooth-ass save that even makes Valentine look like a million bucks, laughing at his kayfabe opponent. Too bad they didn't make it through heh.
Gene 'Pass the fucking potatoes!' Okerlund
I always loved it when the Iron Sheik would call Gene Oakerlund "Gene Mean!" 😁😁😁😁
Mean Gene was part of my childhood. Remember him better than many of the wrestlers.
There will never be anything like this again. Picasso in high boots. Pure smack. Amen.
