I have a 1958 Dodge 700 semi 19k mi with a 354 hemi, O.D. 5 spd, 7.80 gears 9.00x20 tires, 218hp 2 bbl, Electric motor torque. I expected a hemi to be peaky but have alot of fun running guys bobtail that have 400+ hp cummins at about my weight (im all steel tandem vs single axle toters) i only use 3 gears from 10 to 70 mph. We are about even until they shift 9 or 12 times and i have to let off to wait for them to shift and find the turbo again to keep from hitting them then bore it again up to 5,000 rpm then shift when they do. 3 colors, rusty and Butt ugly, tarp straps on the hood latch! Gas engines always had much more useable torque. People forget that. They always had to go to lower and more gears with overdrives to compensate when switching to diesel. Still true. A cummins has about 600rpm of useable power, the Hemi half that size has 2500+ and no turbo lag and the drivetrain is tons lighter. Gear ratios make for exact same drawbar pull in low. Moves a 60k lb excavator on a lowboy. I grew up on 700+ ci gas truck engines and tractors and never bought the Diesel is majic story. And im a diesel engine builder and modifer. Id still take a 8v-92 or 12v-71 with an Allison Automatic over the gas engines for cross country work with all these stoplights now. Because about all a manual trans does is make you work to replace alot of parts getting across town 45 minutes behind an Allison while using 1/3 more fuel. Thats stats from an independent study in indy. Now if i could only find that 1958 D 900 cabover with a 354 and Allison in my manual! Im building a KB 572 with a 10-71 blower injected with zoomies for a dragster. It will sound like it looks! But wow, the sheer fun i could have with this in that truck!

NICE engine those torque numbers are exactly what you need in a street machine. Everyone always gets so hung up with HP this is for most street machines a big mistake, Look at it this way all that torque in a 3900 pound car give or take a few pounds 70 GTX for example with lets say 3.23 gears you could just loaf it around. You could light the tires up anytime almost at any speed at will. And over 600 HP car would run into the mid to high 10s if all set up right on gas only! Might have to put a little more gear in it but nothing crazy. At highway speed lets say 70 MPH stomp it to the floor hit passing gear while it was smoking the tires it would take off like a rocket. Now put it in a 3400 pound car or less and you would be in the high nines maybe with a LITTLE more cam and maybe not no blowers no nitrous to have to keep filling up pump gas come on people what more do you want?

Yeah if you put an OD of some description in the car it and put around 3.9s in the rear it would be good until you realize it is 572 cubes and even ticking over you're never ever going to be able to drive long distances in it. I don't mean to sound like a ricer saying his S2000 makes 1100hp here lol, but I read an article on the 528 MP crate motor back when Mopar had them as crate engines. The 528 had all the 6s - 600hp, 600ft/lbs at 6000rpm. All good, but they say the fuel economy was truly terrible and made the package an urban beast. That's 'only' a 528. Imagine a 572. You're gonna have to carry a couple of gerry cans going for a cross country drive, worry about fuel planning and all that (expense also). Nicks garage dynoed a 505 Hemi and it had 630 hp with a single double pumper Holley on a dual plane intake. I feel for a dual purpose engine something like this would be preferable. In fact they're making a low deck Hemi block in aluminum. A 505 based on low deck architecture would be even better because the pin height in the piston is moved up the same amount the deck is lowered resulting in a far lighter piston. I think a motor like this in a Dart with OD poss gear vendors (since extensive body mods are avoided compared to a dedicated OD auto) might work well, give you some great use and still maintain acceptable fuel range making you want to drive it as often as possible.

Well I'm a real mechanic and a Mopar nut. I think 615 is a bit low given a 'little' 505 iron head and block Hemi at Nick's Garage made 632 with a single 4bbl and a dual plane intake. However for what they are trying to do with this 572 it is ideal. I get it. Great power, idle like a baby but for all that, the fuel economy would be diabolical. I remember a 528 Hemi crate motor review said the 528 Mopar Performance Hemi was the worst economy they ever encountered. I feel if you have to put up with 572 economy it might as well have 800 hp. I reason if you want a motor that you can live with for daily driving and long trips you'd never ever drive a 572 Hemi like that because you'd be carrying jerry cans of fuel. Look everyone wants something different so ... Here you go watch from 8mins: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zmuqp6SAprS3dc4.html You might like this 572 Hemi also (my kind of car): kzread.info/dash/bejne/mqutlc2oncjQp9I.html

You are so in denial everyone knows the hemi is a dog engine that wont stay together past 5800 rpm. The reason Ford stop making the SOHC was not because the engine was no good, it was because the higher ups at Ford was idiots. You must remember the block of the cammer was the same bullet proof block used for the 427 FE motor. There really is no comparison, and you know it. So don't try to make something out of nothing. Oh by the way you can still buy a brand new SOHC engine. Check out the August 2009 Hot Rod magazine. With the new head design the SOHC makes even more power.

+wastelandsoldier1 Yeah right. Hemi don't have shit on a good bigblock Chevy. Nothing does.

+wastelandsoldier1 Top Fuel Hemi is a totally aftermarket engine that shares zero parts with a Chrysler Hemi. Back in the days when they used production based engines, there was top fuel bigblock Chevy engines. Also Fords, Pontiac's, Buicks, AMC, etc. You obviously know nothing of the old days.

I really don't care what you say about this engine it cannot compare in any way to the Ford SOHC motor, period....

Ford didn't put that motor in enough cars for it to even be considered relevant.

the Ford SOHC motor had issues. One i remember the most is the heads would crack between the valve seats.

Chrysler Hemi is the most over hyped engine ever built. Must be the bigass valvecovers. But in the real world, many a Hemi got its ass stomped by bigblock Chevy's, 455 Buicks, Pontiac's, Olds, and even the old smallblock Chevy. Big waste of space really. And to all them dumbass people that think a top fuel Hemi is the same engine that came in a old cuda, think again.

yes well a subaru 2 litre puts out 800 hp so you guys are millionairs or something not really a cheap engine to build - i would hope for 950 hp rather short on hp for size of the engine and dollars !

I guess you failed comprehension at school. I hate to see people left behind by the education system.
