Watched our pilot muster caribou in Nunavut with one. Australian pilot, he loved that it had no parameters to what it could do. I believed him cause after doing a few tricks (hammerheads and the like) I wasn’t afraid of circus rides, lol. Had five rotors and could long line two full fuel drums. My favourite

re John Shaft: first the kill zone is between the deck and 1500 feet re AKs. we were given the area to hunt at alitude then drop like a rock to the deck. they do not hear us until we are on them and then its in our favor since the belts are in the M60's safteys off and a smoke (2nd tour white phosporous) grenade pin pulled on the barrel in left hand. i think they had a milisecond option to hide to look up and to hestiate. that was in our favor. second the LOACH is incredibley able to juke to bounce to move quick making it a poor target for a few seconds. finally if we did take hits the cobra was trailing between 2000 and 1500 feet and could dive with a mini gun, a 20 mm cannon and fleshette rockets. in a real pinch he could fire them all at once. amazing aircraft. far better than the bell jet ranger or anything for low level recon

This was my experience with the OH-6A LOACH (and without the cobras) in Vietnam. I also flew the OH 58 KIOWA, (Jet Dangers) and it was a waddling whale that could not escape or jink around fast enough! It was also comparatively under powered even though it had the same engine as the LOH! I wound up with about 1350 hours in the LOH, and 1050 Hours in the OH-58 in 2 1/2 years Straight in Vietnam. The OH-6A was my favorite for precise work!

Beautiful machine, but I have never understood how lightweight/unarmored/armed helicopters are viable. It seems like it would be so vulnerable to ground fire of almost any kind....I imagine even an Ak-47 could bring one down or incapacitate the pilot(s)....I don't see how they can survive. God help them if they were targeted by a heavy machine gun or similar weapon. It seems like an armed ground enemy could locate and effectively engage the helo long before it could bring its weapons to bear and defend itself. If anyone here has history in armed helicopters, I would love to know how they get past this. I mean I know the Apache can attack at long range....I am just talking about machines like this one.

They are flying low and fast so the window of opportunity to fire on one is slim and none. They are such a small, agile and fast target they are actually really hard to hit. What you with all of your vast experience seem to be missing is this... we lightened the ship from (AH-6i) 5700 lbs to (MD-530FF) 4200 Lbs. Same 630 shp Rolls 250C30 and drive train/rotor, but sooo much less weight... she screams like a bat out of hell! More agile, and with greater punch with the API .50 cal M3P's. It is a joy to fly and is so effective everyone on the program, Afghan, US Mil, and contractors all have a price on their heads... The Taliban is scared to death of these... call them the Jengi… means Warrior! Of all the programs, this one is showing the most concrete results!!! It is also one of the most cost effective programs ever deployed in Afghanistan... but then, if you just want to make comments not backed by anything like FACTS... go ahead and keep talking

Yeah, that's why Task Force 160 uses them...as a retired Apache driver, no I wouldn't use this for taking on the Russian hoard's tank forces but for LIC and CAS it's a PROVEN and EFFECTIVE weapon system. And as far as "tax payers money" go (I would be one of those) I would rather it was spent on an AH-6 in theater fighting crunchies with AK's and RPG's then an Apache, which although extremely effective, is NOT a bargain to fly!
