This operator of the high-reach demo excavator said, "this is coming down TODAY, PERIOD." He was strategic in choosing what to attack to bring large sections down. This was a fun series of demolition videos to watch. Keep up the good work!!

John, I really appreciate your contributions. I am always impressed by the power these machines have. On this site the high reach has made itself redundant. I'm really looking forward to new demolition videos.

I am impressed at the power of this machine, the force and strength is incredible. I have read that the jaw on the shear puts out 3000 tons of pressure. As stated on the site of the manufacturer.

Yes, you are right. The power of high-pressure hydraulics makes this possible. The high-reach demolition excavator began use abroad, and proved itself as an efficient machine, especially for steel-framed buildings like this one because of the ability to position the shear easily to cut steel. Previously, that steel would have to be cut manually with cutting torches, a far slower method. The Hitachi ZX850 demo machine here has a 140 foot reach, a good sized machine. There are bigger ones out there.

I have a few odds and ends to edit, and then I will be filming a pair of 2-story office buildings in Herndon, VA.

This looks like another case where they removed the roof membrane and insulation before starting the structural demo. It's most clear at 8:05 where you see the gravel sliding off the metal decking with nothing under the gravel. There are fragments of the membrane still on the parapet. You can see the difference at 36:55, where they didn't remove anything under the floor tiles of the roof deck. It must be worthwhile to keep all that out of the debris from the structural demo. At 7:52 -- is that a great demonstration of a "curtain wall" construction hanging there in space? Are they demolishing the parking structure? I was surprised to see them hauling out sections of floor slabs if they are going to demo the whole thing.

Interesting. When you say it wouldn't be done in Japan, is that because of the methods used, or because they are demolishing a totally usable building?
