Matthew Sinclair No, the current cars are a good bit more powerful. The MP4/4 had 676bhp (less in the races), the current cars well over 800bhp. In 1988 the boost was limited to 2.5 bar and fuel tank size limited to 150L (they currently have 100kg or ~140L). These restrictions meant that in 1988 the engines produced considerably less power than in the "turbo monster" years before.

Yea the problem is that this is a twin turbo and current F1 is a single turbo, only way to get this beautiful sound is to increase the RPM limit and allow for twins

Despite both being V6 with a turbocharger & similar displacement (old cars had 1.5 litres, new cars have 1.6 litres), they cannot sound anymore different. I don't oppose turbo V6s, but I did wish they sounded like the 1980s V6 units more than oversized vacuum cleaners.

***** Those old ~1300hp 1.5 V6 were only used when qualifying, and then it is a single use because after they're pretty much destroyed. The racing sessions usually kept power 700~900hp ranges. The newer motors CAN apparently get ~1000hp out, but new regulations such as fuel-flow restrictions and ~5 engines per season means achieving that power is unfeasible.

alvie2 firing order also changes the tone of the motor, hence why Ferrari v8 sounds different from ohc v8s.

vtecnegro85 All racing V8s use a flat-plant crank, whereas most other road-going V8s use a cross-plane crank. Ferrari road cars are distinctive because they share the same flat-plane crank to their racing cousins.

This was the 1988 McLaren, it only had between 620-650 hp both in the race and qualifying.

Sounds even more brutal than MP4/5 or MP4/6 which are also truly amazing! But this one can make me very happy, It throws me back in time when F1 was my favorite sport. Senna forever :(

Thanks for posting. Big praise for the Honda company to maintain these priceless beauties in pristine condition and enable them to do what they were made for, i.e. working and making us happy.

I think these f1 cars are absolutely perfect. They are loud, they have big wheels on the back, manual transmission, much more power, they throw a flame in a exhaust, and nice sound. It sounds like perfect car for real men(apart from safety). In the past you could see the skills which had each racer different. I think F1 lost some tradition which could be important reason why we should watch on TV or go on the track.

Nice to hear this car when recorded with proper equipment, I'm too young to have heard it for real sadly. As for the sound, it's beautiful. But the comparison argument still rages on... just enjoy it ffs.

modern F1 take notes. Turbo V6's don't have to sound like vacuum cleaners.

Imagine now what was to drive these beast like senna did! Great amount of power in Honda engine magnificent sound like angels!! Just missing the yellow helmet and the late great ayrton to drive it like only he can do it!! I would love to be there to hear the mclaren roar and Senna dancing in the rain like nobody did then, now and forever it will be someone to make what he did!! Ayrton Senna forever live in our hearts

What an honor it must be to drive this car, even if you are only going a circle on a skid pad.

senna, and the way he would push the rpm in the turns made this car sound unbelievable. this guy doesn't do it justice. matched with it's size, and amazing style, it's just the coolest f1 car to ever come out of the racing scene. i can't stand the look today. there is something to be said about the low line, where the tires are higher than the drag points of the body. the frame and suspension look like toothpicks, the carbon fiber here, must be of immense strength and quality. then the sheer size of those tires from the rear. i wish we could have a low line racing league, but it'd be too dangerous…and put grand prix to shame.

I was hiking in the Calanques between Marseille and Cassis when Senna was testing this car at Paul Ricard back in 88, and I could hear him from there. That's 15 miles / 25 kilometers away.

Hi sir, I'm 30 years old and I was actually at the 1988 canadian grand prix and saw Ayrton and Alain really drive and race with this monster. Of course any F1 driver of that era could have won with that car, but only Senna and Prost really used 100% of that car's true potential. Let's put it this way: I've truly seen The Real Senna, dancing on the limit with this car. So thank you for that remark and I remain with my 1st comment. See ya!

Back when they announced that the F1 engines would be 1.6 V6 turbo, this is what I expected. I was disappointed. Later when Honda was to join F1, again I expected something like this, but I was disapointed again. Let's just hope that the new engines for 2021 have better sounds than today.

its a dream come true for millions of fans across the globe to drive in this car. R.I.P. Ayrton Senna.

They really jacked the ride height on that. Quite a jarring sight, considering how low they ran at the time.

Honda's 2015 engine sounds similar to this in the low and mid range, but then goes on to rev much higher. They've posted a video of it.

1988 Honda 1.5L V6, 2015 Honda 1.6L V6. Don't be too surprised if the new engines sound similar to this. You can't go by the lab recordings they have released, it will come alive when it's in a car at a track.

Marzio Fortunato actually youre wrong in 88' Drivers Championship points were awarded on a 9-6-4-3-2-1 basis to the first six finishers in each race. Only best 11 results counted toward the championship. Prost scored 105 points during the year, but only 87 points counted for the championship. Senna scored 94 points, but 90 points counted toward the championship by virtue of winning more races so Senna became the World Champion, but he did not score the most points over the course of the year.

oMref1 Doesnt matter,Senna won 8 races and Prost won 7, theres nothing to discuss about that,Senna made a better use of MP44 plus the most epic races of Senna's career happened in 88 season.Prost was a professor but no one can deny that in 1988 Senna was a mosnter and he was better than prost.

The car's proportions were so much better back then imo. Nowadays cars are way too long and not quite wide enough, to me it doesn't look as aggressive or as visually pleasing as it does here.

The future 2015 turbo McLaren-Hondas better have the red and white livery, because that would be a sweet homage :D

Low downforce and not much grip on the tyres? Where did you get those facts from? It has a decent amount of downforce, but not as efficient as today's cars. The grip of those tyres are phenomenal actually, wide tracks.
