It's been a while since I've watched or read anything about this legendary car, but each time I do it never ceases to amaze me just how much went into developing such an incredible car, and the attention to detail, especially when it comes to things like weight saving, is just mind blowing. I love the F1. I love the way it was a, cost no object, project of sheer passion, using the best of everything and at the cutting edge of what was possible at the time. It's hard to believe it's, more or less, 30 years since the car was conceived, but there are still few cars that can better it. Unfortunately, it's one of those cars that are pretty much unobtainable to anyone who isn't staggeringly wealthy. As if the original price of almost £650,000 wasn't enough to put it out of reach to us mere mortals, it's nothing compared to the eye watering amounts they fetch today. And unlike many old supercars, that are a little more realisticly priced, and can also be maintained by a competent owner, the F1's running costs and complexity means they're not just crazy expensive to buy, but also crazy expensive to keep!

Is that green F1 the one that was damaged at Suzuka and was flown back for repair? When it was flown to Adelaide in a wooden crate it was the star attraction in pit lane! I had travelled to Adelaide for the week, and was hosted like Royalty by the officials for the week, I mentioned to the late Erik Rubens what a treat it would be to get a run in the beautiful McLaren, I was at the other end of pit lane photographing the Sauber team when I was shouted back to my friends, the McLaren was running and I was directed to the right hand seat and hastily strapped in and was taken for a lap, when we returned to pit lane I was like a child at Christmas, in my haste to get into the car I didn’t take stock of who the driver was, but when I disembarked I discovered that it was George Harrison! RIP Erik Rubens!

The car was a world beater from the moment it was launched. At that time there was nothing even remotely close in terms of performance and overall package. It scared the shit out of Ferrari and Lamborghini and reminded the world once again just how good British Engineering CAN be. The McLaren P1 is another world beater too and it's a hybrid. Another technologically amazing car that I'd faster than the competition. McLaren is at least one British mark we can still be proud of.

It is something for the British to be proud of even though Gordon Murray is not a typical bloke. But with a German engine and a bunch of other things not from Britain. I would say the new T50 with a Cosworth is an even better mark for the British. As it turns out, most of the marks are made by unique guys no matter what country they're from.
