I did this on a 2003 VW Jetta a long time ago. Not as expensive of a car but still nerve racking. Thanks!

Great video. My 1st experience with a helicoil was when a sub-frame bolt went from going righty tighty to righty loosy

I just changed the oil on my 765LT. I tried to loosen the drain plug with a 3/8" long handle ratchet. It was in there so tight it wouldn't budge. I was so curious about how tight it was that I used my 1/2" drive Proto professional mil-spec torque wrench. It finally broke free at 83 lb/ft. Needless to say I was a little pissed. I bought it used with 900 miles and this was it's first year oil change. I inspected the threads with a 20× bore scope. The threads to my amazement looked fine. Putting it back together I used a new drain plug and torqued it to spec. I didn't put the belly pan back on until I started and ran the engine 5 times checking for issues, no problems at all. Makes me wonder who it was that tightened the plug in the first place??? You didnt need the tap paste, the dripping oil was lubricating the tap just fine. Not to bad for a non-machinist.

When I did the 1st oil change on my 650S, there was no crush washer on the drain plug and it was over torqued.

I've come across some very tight like that, and I've seen stripped heads too many times. I wonder if the stripped threads is cross threading more than torque. While the paste may not have been needed, I like it collecting the chips so I know where they are. I'd also rather have more than enough lubrication than not enough.

@McMedics cross threading is a good possibility. Techs eager to maximize hourly rate could easily install the plug cock-eyed. Especially if they use power tools. I changed my own oil partly because I like working on cars, but mostly, because I don't like being told that just an oil change is going to cost $1800.00.

@@McMedics This paste, which came along with the kit, is not lubrication, but meant to pick up cutting debree. You, tread in smal steps, and back uot each time, cleaning metal shavings and paste away, applying a new layer. This is peneding on hole deapth done 2-3 times...

That's what I did, and it does have lubrication properties and I did mention it collects metal.

I would have poured that old oil back in with the plug-in place, waited a few minutes and then drained it to flush any residual shavings out. Then refill the crankcase with fresh oil. Or if you want to professionally do this service again for customer cars have a rethread kit fitting in the oil pan drain hole connected to a pressurized oil evacuation system to pull out any residual shavings/debris from the system.

That won't work on these cars. I've done it a few times now and no shavings end up in the system if you use the paste. I've checked the filter after doing them, after a visual inspection first.

Pretty much. I stopped when it became not worth my time. Spending 5-6 hours on a video to get 900 views with 30k subscribers isn't inspiring.

Oof. I imagine you looked for this and it wasn't the case, but I've dealt with this recently on an early Gallardo and there were enough "extra" threads behind those stripped by the stock drain plug that I was able to just clean the threads a little and use a longer drain plug. What's the torque spec McLaren provides for the oil drain anyway? Anything more than 20-25ft/lbs would make me real nervous into aluminum.

  • @McMedics

18 ft lbs. You can't do a longer plug because it will block the passage which is quite small. The plug has that tip on it, which goes up into a hole for it actually.

It's not a pan, dry sump. You have to disassemble the entire engine after removing it.

You should have used a proper tapping tool. A Timesert is better. Those threads are about 7mm deep. Time sert has the correct kit for it. 😮
