McKenzie River Spring Chinook Salmon Fishing
Fish the McKenzie River in central Oregon with guide, Dan Fisher along with Ron Reed & Jake Gregg. Use a Clackacraft Magnum Power Drifter to access Spring Chinook that seek the cool waters of this beautiful tributary of the Willamette River. Pro-Cure roe behind divers and back bouncing get the job done. Also, see a detailed explanation of using Pro-Cure powdered scents by Steve Lynch.

oh Damn.. I used to fish the ole McKenzie in my late teens and all through my 20's from the head waters through brown hole and martins rapids all the way to armatage park where it mates with the Willamette.. that was the late 60's through the 70's.. man what memories you have brought back to me.. We just use eggs harvested from the salmon and used the ole borax and that worked perfect.. Vida just down river.. and then there is a place where the bend in the river heads south and the 126 comes to meet it that is an excellent place to catch ole metalheads and salmon and other fish.. all of these modern tricks.. special scents special gear.. it is amazing how much money you folks spend..in the boat if you are not using 6 -8 pound test then you have no sense of fair play.. We used an old 10 foot metal boat with a 15 horse motor or the drift boat.. Well thanks for the memories

Oregon Fish-Aholics O.F.A. It definitely was facing backwards, we swapped it out just after that. Good catch! 🎣

I noticed that to. That could be a bad day loosing a rod because of backwards folbe rod holder.
So what are the point of the oars? If you were rowing to maintain position or slow your drift would you face the bow or stern upstream?

Jim Somerville, the Magnum power drifter is a shallow water running jet boat that you can also row in certain situations. If you want to row the bow would be facing up stream. It’s makes for a stealthy approach, if you want to side drift or bobber dogg. I row it quite often when I am Steelhead and salmon fishing in the rivers. Extremely versatile boat!

Don't have a boat. Is it cool to fish from the shore? Any good spot for shore fishing along the McKenzie?

Sure, you just have to find the access. Put your time in.
Since when is being West of the Cascades considered Central Oregon?

kj we called east of the cascades eastern Oregon 😂. At least when I lived in sandy and brightwood.
I thought bait fishing the mckenzie was against state regulations?

Only on a few selected river miles. You can find the regulations on the ODFW fishing regs site.
Central Oregon??? Not hardly. The Mac is considered western Oregon since it's west of the Cascades. Furthermore, it doesn't get much, if any, of a chinook run. Gotta wonder if the writer was smoking some great Oregon pot. I live on the river, by the way. It's across the street!

Both those holes are less than a quarter mile from the house. Cool to see but dont want ton of people hammering the water
Horrible fishing ethics . Never let the fish swallow the leader and hook
