I got my mcHF kit in the mail a couple days ago, and your video has been extremely helpful as I assemble and test the radio. At some point I will probably add the ATU module designed by UT0UM (a mod/build video for this would be very helpful for the community as well). Thank you for all your hard work to edit and post this build video!

The MCHF is such a great little radio... The detailed build instructions here are a real inspiration... The kits have much of the fiddly SMD work already assembled leaving just the bigger components to fit... Get to know your radio properly by building it rather than buying a cheaply made clone that has sacrificed BPF components and cut other corners to cut costs/maximise profits, Chris M0nka has every right to be proud of this creation!

I've had my MCHF kit for a couple of years but didn't build it. Your video inspired me to go ahead and finish it. Thanks for the thorough build description, that helped a lot by watching where you ran into problems. This is a kit for the very experienced builder, the instructions (mostly build hints) are very sparse and you will need to do some interpretation of how things actually fit together. My kit did not include the final RF transistors - I had to order them separately. You don't really need to socket the LCD - the designer put PCB pads on only the necessary signals and left blank vias for the rest, so it should be easy to unsolder. I was concerned about the board to board connectors shorting against the LCD, so I added a strip of kapton tape across the pins as a precaution. The LCD doesn't have any traces in this area so it should not be a problem. I bought my case separately from eBay and it seems to fit well, but as mentioned before, you will have to figure out where all the screws and plates go. When winding the coils I kept my LCR meter handy to verify that my windings were correct and the inductances were close to what the schematic values were. Thanks again - I am close to finishing and will let you know how it goes.

Excellent video (again) Paul! (just paused to write this). 😉 I've been wanting to build this radio with my daughter for a while now - or rather she wants us to build some radio gear together and therefore I've zoomed in on this project (the original of course since I just can't stand knock-offs of open-source projects. How many hours do you estimate your build took? When watching you doing the toroids I can't help noticing an error in the build guide. It says' 10 turns' in the text while clearly showing 11 turns in the figure (T2 & T3) - each pass through the center of a toroid is counted as 1 turn according to what I've learned, right? Nice film just my two cents: and that is when you trimed the headers of the lcd schreen I whould have kempt the length of the femal headers and desolder the male headers so that I can keep te length of the female headers and also remove the black isolation of the male headers so you can keep the depth of the schreen to the top pice and also the distance of the top cover to the buttons. That whould also look better. But its a good video to look at and to learn. 73 PA1TAS/ZS6PMT

Very nice video, you did a great job, but what a lot of work, and difficult filing the LCD header down! The TX quality in SSB and FM sounds really perfect. It is a shame that M0NKA or the German club are not producing kits any more. The Chinese clones also seem unreliable, they won't give details of board or firmware versions, and ask more for a kit than built!

Thanks, very interesting! Can you take a look at the QCX-SSB project, please? It's a simple mod to the $50 QCX CW receiver made by QRPLabs.
