McFarlane Toys NINJA SPAWN Action Figure Review

Ойын-сауық

The Mk11 Spawn figure was incredible and very impressive. The classic Spawn figure came with a throne but was otherwise unimpressive. Will this release be able to appeal to the broader audience or will the specific nature and lack of quality keep it from flying off the shelves?

I have watched every review for years. You’re the most honest figure reviewer out here and it’s not even close. No sucking up to companies. No begging for freebies. In depth and true to you. I appreciate that and I look forward to many more years. I had to stop collecting due to lack of money for the hobby but I get to still see what’s out there through you. Keep going. You are appreciated.

I always feel like McFarlane (not all of them) figures are a great base for custom. So much potential but left half finished. Doesn't even need that much work sometimes and you could end up with a very good premium looking figure. Fun for people like me who like to custom but such a shame out of the box for most collectors. More like, see what it could become sort of thing.

That's why I still run with McFarlane, I find customizing some of them fun. Some already great figures get even better with a wash or added paint in spots, maybe dremeling some of the spots in the midsection ball socket to increase range. I managed to kitbash a better classic Superman using the AC 1000 legs and diaper with the DC Rebirth uppers

Exactly bro and they are 20 bucks typically. Amazing value. Expecting this figure with the amazing sculpt detail and articulation to be fully painted is just stupid. If Todd made these as they are with full paint apps like the originals then the cost of these would be at least double and then people would complain about the price.

I think Commando Spawn is great because it reflects what Al Simmons was in his past life. I noticed how every Hellspawn seems to reflect what kinda warrior they were before becoming Spawn (samurai, knight, Viking etc.) so it makes sense that Al would become a commando Spawn since that’s what he was

Like many of McFarlane figures, I'll wait to see if it goes on sale. If so, I'll pick it up because I'm more willing to put work into a figure if it's ~$10 than I am if it's 20-25. Classic Spawn or Gunslinger are my favorite.

To answer your question, Anthony, I watch a lot of your reviews. Sometimes even for lines and themes I have no interest in just because I enjoy your approach and style of reviewing; it is just very enjoyable content to consume for me. I do go thru phases when I am watching next to none of your reviews simply because I have seasons where other things besides action figures have more of my attention; it’s nothing to do with the quality of your content. But that just means when I eventually come back around to watching your videos again, there is a lot to watch because of how much you create and I like that. I’d say the only line I really don’t watch of your reviews is the DBZ stuff and that’s just because I have absolutely zero personal interest in it. DBZ isn’t dumb or bad, it has its merits, I just have no personal interest in it. That’s my longwinded answer to that question. Thanks as always, Anthony!

Q1: I am not really familiar with any other iterations of Spawn, but aside from the original Spawn character, Gunslinger Spawn caught my attention because of his great character design, the whole Gunslinger look for Spawn made him extra badass. Q2: I watch almost every video from you Sir Anthony because of how technical and honest you are when it comes to your reviews, you always give me extra knowledge in the figures that I want to collect, and right now I am trying to learn and practice customizing figures and the first thing that I do is watch a review from you so I can know what I will be dealing with when I want to use a figure as a base, and how would I go about painting and sculpting figures. A video from you is always delight because I get to learn new things, and also laugh at the jokes you crack every now and then HAHAHA thank you Sir Anthony!

This is what I don’t understand about this line. Todd owns the license to spawn and charges $25 a figure. He has to pay for the license rights to the DC multiverse figures and charges $20. There is no reason why the spawn line should be this bad.

I prefer the Kickstarter Classic Spawn design which is the classic costume without the boot. It also has the screaming Burnt Al Simmons head. I enjoy all of your reviews. Especially reviews on DC Multiverse figures. In particular, Batman related characters. Also Mafex DC figures and Spawn figure reviews. I would also have preferred the figure on the back of the Ninja Spawn package. So much cooler.

  • @JerryGattz

Question of the Day 1: I, like you, like the semi classic, big boot, Spawn. Behind that, I like the original Manga Spawn. Love that Gundam/Ronin Warrior look. I wish the new one coming out was that version, just more articulation. Questions of the day 2: I am more inclined to watch videos of stuff I am planing to buy, or have bought. Though I will watch random figure reviews. I also like watching the progress on your figure line, and figure discussion videos like the one you did about the importance of vertical hinge wrists. Nice artillery BTW. I would be curious to see you tackle a review for Transformers and Masters of the Universe figures. Not saying you should have to collect these, but just to see one of each to get you take on those brands. As for this review... I am starting to feel like McFarlane is expecting us to paint these figures. Maybe because of inflation costs, instead of price hiking they're saving on paint apps. I am okay with it, because I prefer having articulated Spawn figures over heavily painted staction figures. However, not everyone is able to paint their figures. I am only thinking of this because McFarlane does make customizable figures. Like the Artist Proof varients, as well as the Warhammer primed figures. Those are definitely intended to be painted.

I watch reviews on figures I'm either interested in buying, interested to see in-depth but not necessarily buy, or figures that have a lot of hype going on and want to see what's up. I also love how in-depth you go into explaining how articulation works and should be made better, it's something that has always fascinated me. I also sometimes know a figure is pretty bad and enjoy watching you tear it down xd.

I watch reviews of figures that either look cool, I have on pre-order, or I own already. I watch the ones of figures I already own to see if our thoughts align. This figure, for example I really enjoy. The biggest downside for me is the paint though. But I mostly buy McFarlane figures to mess with not really as high-end collectibles. The hips on mine work far better than most people's which is what makes it more enjoyable. They're tighter and the thigh swivel actually works. I do with it had better range in the torso though. Still, this is my favorite Spawn figure at the moment.

It seems like Mcfarlane just don't not want to move away from this overall body. Every new figure has the exact same issue. At this point they should have migrated in an entirely new body system. They started sculpting the wrists/ankle pegs.....but their problem is they don't need those joints at all. They need what Hasbro/Neca use. I'd really be curious to hear why they are stuck on this articulation system. I agree that they could just charge higher prices for more paint. Or make a deluxe version that has more paint + accessories in addition to the cheaper guy. It's not like anyone else is doing Spawn. Someone needs to take away the glue option from Mcfarlane. On most of their figures parts could really just be floating like the belt. I think the diaper needs to go away and be replaced with a solid generic roomy crotch region(or a diaper on top of the solid crotch). Fix the double ball peg system like AC said. Clean up the elbows/knees Stop designing the wrists/ankles to transition into the hand/feet when the ball peg works against it.

I have some of the figures that you’ve collected such as some of the Nintendo figmas and Neca items, but I mainly watch you because of you’re objective and serious approach to figure collecting. You stress on the importance of the aesthetic of a figure by making sure it fits the source material and that the anatomy looks natural. Mostly, you make sure the quality matches the prices. You’re review on the ML Retro Rogue convinced me to pick her up since I wanted a figure of one of my favorite X-Men. Though despite your complaints on the 20th Cap, I still think he looks good. You offer a fresher perspective that helps us collectors rather than just constantly singing praises.

I think purely for impact, reading that big full page panel for the first time, Medieval Spawn is my favourite. Just a really cool concept. I watch everything daily, even if I’m not planning on getting a particular figure you’re reviewing I find your insights very informative. I feel like McFarlane should have got in on the price hike and upped their figures to $25, but used that hike to add paint. I respect Todd for saying he’ll be the last to hike prices, it definitely gives him a competitive edge but I’d much rather pay slightly more and get slightly more. Paint and sculpt used to be McFarlane’s thing, now it’s just sculpt and janky articulation.

McFarlane need to up their paint game, even if it means a price increase. Their Justice League Flash was beautifully sculpted but sorely lacking in any paint detail, even the Mattel version had way better paint. I will never understand why companies spend so much on these beautiful sculpts then don't paint them.

I tend to watch everything you review. Sometimes I hold off until I get a figure to mess with it while I watch the review. My favorite version of spawn is from the Animated Series. I did always like the look of the suit in the Movie as well.

I love the Spawn in the Animates Series. I love that show so much and its tragic it ended when it did. I dont watch ALL of your vids like the dragon ball figs but i love the vids where the figs are definitely bad and you roast them and i always check the neca figs especially the aliens and preds.

I usually come to your channel to watch play arts kai reviews, since you're the only reviewer that reviews a lot of them and very detailed about it, but as the time goes on, i watch every review you made on this channel and it pulls me in to another action figure brand that i wouldn't think would ever get an interest in. (still hoping one day you'll review play arts kai 2B from Nier Automata)

I don’t know sh!+ about spawn but I guess this one has intrigued me the most. Even though it has Japanese characters (not sure if it is Japanese) it honestly makes me think more of the hashashins. I mostly collect SWTBS which you don’t even review (and shouldn’t please don’t ruin them for) and then an occasional ML and DCMV, so I watch reviews on those and mafex. Your reviews have actually saved me a lot of money. I also enjoy your Neca reviews, the DBZ and storm collectibles are more window shopping, but I don’t watch them as much. I also watch some of your older custom figure videos. I will watch a lot of your mcfarlane vids as research for customs I want to do but never do. My main collection again is SWTBS but I also collect stuff from and here and there and I’m honestly surprised that the majority of them time you will have a review for a lot them. I’m hoping you will review the Bandai stranger things demogorgon figure. It’s a fun figure but not worth 40 bucks imo. I think you will hate it but wanna hear your thoughts.

That box art of based offve an older Ninja Spawn release from the early 2000s. Mcfarlanes QC doesn't seem to fix these issues ever which is unfortunate.

Super hilarious to me that the head is a masked face with another cloth wrap that serves as a second mask. As if people looking at ninja spawn won't immediately recognize him as spawn with a cloth wrap on his face. The box art version is easily better looking stylistically too.
