@@StarrsMillStudyHelp en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States#Language "English ... is the de facto national language of the United States." It goes on to talk about there being no "official language" dictated by the federal government (or however that would work in the US, I'm not American), so perhaps there's a conversation to be had about it. But if their laws are written in English, if the education system requires English, if English is recognized by most states as the "official" language, and it's the only language spoken by the large majority of the citizenry, the I don't think the statement "America doesn’t even have an official language" is very honest if it's being used to imply the United States has no language preference.

Flippant Phantom - To my knowledge, no. But our country's so huge that regional dialects spring up all over the place. I will say that here in central Illinois I generally hear "Grandpa". "Grandfather" is also used, but never directly. Like, you wouldn't say "Grandfather, could you do something for me?", but you might say, "This is my Grandfather." I occasionally hear "Nana" in place of "Grandma", but it seems fairly rare. "Grandmother", as with "Grandfather", is simply too formal to be used directly. Lastly, and I don't know how widespread this is or if this is only from personal experience, but pronunciations of "Grandpa" and "Grandma" tend to fluctuate based on how quickly you say the word because switching from a d-sound to a p-sound or m-sound is obnoxious. So you might hear someone say "Granpa", "Grampa", "Granma", or "Gramma", although you'll never see anyone spell it that way. So there you have it, a completely incomplete look at one tiny sliver of one state in the middle of the United States on what people call their grandparents. XD

I personally call one grandma "grandma" and the other one "Nana," and my sort of step grandma is "grandma first name"and my grandfathers are "grandpa" and "grandpa first name" :)

i didn't see anyone mentioning Asia here, so fun fact: in pretty much every collectivist country that values family really highly, you DO talk about your extended family pretty often. This has fallen out of favor as your status in society is determined less and less by your relatives and i actually have no idea how frequently the 'proper' terms are used in modern society but the words still exist. In Mandarin Chinese for example there are specific words for pretty much your entire close and extended family and you just number them oldest to youngest- yi, er, san, etc and just append that number (or title, like 'big' or something related to their job/appearance) to however they happen to be related to you. Also a whole bunch more formal terms that have mostly fallen out of favor, but culturally I'm given to understand that you can still use them if you want to look cute/suck up. Kind of like calling your mom 'mother dearest' when you want a favor.
