Travis Is correct. "Not if I see you first" means either "I will avoid you rather than have to spend time with you" Or potentially "I will kill you on sight" in Travis's scary voice.

Before today it never crossed my mind that it could be interpreted that way. I totally get it now, but I've never heard it used or used it in that context before. It was always just a playful "Ahhh but maybe I'll be the one to notice you first the next time we cross paths!"

Like so many times in the past, Travis is right. For many years, I always assumed it was a fun way of saying "if I see you before you see me, then I'M the one who has seen you later." But that doesn't even make grammatical sense. It doesn't matter who sees whom first--both parties are seeing the other. The only context it makes sense is Travis's interpretation.

@@Levacque Obesity is often a result of disability. There's a huge crossover between obesity and chronic mental and physical health conditions. Not in every case, for sure, but definitely often enough that people should just be accommodating without demanding someone prove they're one of the fat people who 'deserves' basic respect by asking them to bring out their medical records or trauma history or whatever.

Is it really? I mean, that’s always how I’ve understood it. I can’t really think of it being used maliciously as in really trying to insult the person. I’ve always heard it used playfully as a light tease or zing. But, yeah. They other way doesn’t make sense. I mean, two people can see each other at the same time. Is that meant to be the joke - the absurdity? Whereas in the Travis version, I imagine that the joke is that they would avoid the other person (thus preventing them from being seen). Not necessarily hiding, like dodging behind a potted plant… but more like taking a different hallway to your destination to avoid walking past them. 🤷‍♀️
