MB Sprinter Limp Mode Solved!!

How I cleared my MB Sprinter's limp mode! We cleaned the Diesel Particulate Filter with Diesel Particulate Fluid Cleaner and Flush and then forced regeneration with iCarSoft's OBD II reader. Here are the steps!

GREAT VIDEO, NEW SUB. I AM RETIRED ON A ALMOST FIXED PENSION. I CANNOT AFFORD TO GO TO A MB STEALERSHIP. I REALLY WANT TO TAKE MY WIFE TO SEE AMERICA IN A SPRINTER AND HAVE ALWAYS WANTED A 2.1 LT DIESEL. MY WIFE MAY NOT HAVE LONG, SO THIS IS GOING TO HELP ME GREATLY. THANK YOU SO MUCH. GOD BLESS FROM THE 641....

Well plugged DPF is not the only source of the limp mode. Several other sensors malfunctioning and turbo vacuum leaks will have the same symptoms.

If you have to run the regen 10x, you are missing something in your diag and getting lucky it actually completed a regen after 10x. I have seen dpfs go from 300, 400, 500% full state to 20%. In 1 regen. Beware of the black death. Something is causing excessive soot, maybe a nox sensor or egr sensor, exhaust leaks, boost actuator? Plugged intake manifold. Loose intake runner controls or stuck totally. These Van's are loaded with problems.

Hi Anthony, my 2012 Sprinter is throwing up an orange engine light and after checking with a simple OBD2 it says it might be box sensors - could you explain what steps you'd take in my situation? The vans running well, just the light. At times after a hard run it goes but has come back twice now - would you suggest hit it harder on a long run or look into it further? All the best!

@@stevenalley494 I just drive the vehicle with a scan tool connected that you can use to monitor pids. Monitor the nox pods upstream and downstream. If the nox ppm is like 1500+ ppm, look for a hole in the dpf or bad vband seal. Monitor your cylinder contribution to make sure you don't have a bad fuel injector. Then if that's all good, nox down stream should be like 1 or 3 ppm idling and 30ppm driving 30mph not accelerating. Nox downstream full throttle should be like 127ppm. If the sensor is not reading it could be bad. Check wiring if its good, replace the nox that isn't reading.

Anthony, do you know if there are any issues with doing the 'regen while driving' option even if you are not in limp mode? Seems like doing this every now and then would be smart so you clean out smaller amounts of soot before it gets clogged?

@@ploglet the vehicle should regen on its own regularly while you drive. If you own and care about your diesels, I would recommend buying the liquimoly dpf filter purge cleaner kit, apply the product and absolutely command a regen using your scan tool once a year. You shouldn't have to do it at all so that its really extra. Not required but smart for reducing exhaust backpressure.

I have a 2011 Freightliner Dodge MB Sprinter and the iCarsoft MB2 tool. I went to the BENZ on the iCarsoft MB2 and tried the DPF reset but my scanner said that this program does not work with my van! I wonder if the iCarsoft MB 3 has a DPF regen that does work on my van? Anyone try the MB3? Or is there another DPF scanner tool that does? I don't want to buy another scanner tool $$$ if it doesn't!

You have to temporarily delete all the fault codes first, right? I also own an icarsoft MBII and have the software for the Sprinter however the scanner won't do the BENZ dpf regen for my 2010 Sprinter 3500 906.655 telling me the function is not available for my vehicle! (?). I saw another video on KZread where someone temporarily deleted the fault codes, then drove the vehicle on the highway to trigger the dpf regeneration. Copmment?

Buy diesel cars or truck with DP filter only if you are able to do, once at month, a high speed run for 100km distance so that the engine can do its DO filter burn out - how true is this?. Regards.

How many oil changes did you do in the entire process of multiple regans?

  • @Wizardman555

Regens are downstream of the engine as a part of the exhaust system with no moving parts so oil changes are unnecessary and irrelevant to doing a regen

  • @Wizardman555

@@trianglechoke7626To perform a regen the engine should be brought up to operating temperature. Forced regens are requested electronically and deliberately by a person of the system and the intentionality of the request implies you will allow the regen to complete its cycle without stopping. During normal operation a regen occurs automatically once the onboard computer has detected one a need to perform one based on the DPF sensors (soot ppm/etc) and the car has been running long enough to be warm enough to do one (a long trip usually). The computer typically waits for a long trip because if you stop driving there is hopefully enough latent heat in the system to complete most of the cycle and it will usually ask the driver to allow it to finish. Incomplete DPF regens and or not performing one due to a series of short trips can result in soot build up too big for a regen to help resulting in your vehicle going into limp mode and requiring physically cleaning your DPF filter yourself or replacing it. Why is this context important? Because this all relates to the heat required to perform a regen forced or automatically. Engine oil is used to lubricate the moving parts in the engine. As the engine ramps up and heat is produced through friction and combustion the oil temperature goes up. The viscosity of oil goes down when its temperature goes up meaning it begins to act more “watery” and less “slimy” (sorry for the poor analogy). Oil naturally comes in contact with the fuel in small quantities (under normal operation (always check your engine if you start going through too much)) because it is lubricating the moving parts associated with the combustion of the fuel, but as the oils viscosity lowers it becomes easier for the oil to mix with the fuel by flowing through the system easier (faster volume replenishment per cycle) and stands a higher chance of burning on the piston walls due to already being at a high temperature. Cold oil requires more energy to reach its burning temp than warm oil. Soooooo, you burn more oil making it “dirty” and requiring more oil changes the more and longer you run your engine (oil also naturally degrades so even if you rarely drive change it once a year). A regen normally occurs in association with a long trip and getting the engine up to temp so I can see the psychological association there however more likely they see smoke coming out of the tail pipe (burnt soot into mostly CO2) and think that’s coming from the fuel system which interacts with the oil which is not true. Many people who work on cars are often familiar with products like Seafoam which do get put in the fuel/oil and do produce a white smoke and do require an oil change because you did dump a bunch of loosened gunk into your oil/engine system. However, the smoke out of your system from Seafoam is caused by an entirely different process than a DPF regen and so even if the output looks similar are not the same and do not require the same reaction.
