Mazzy Star INTERVIEW June 12, 2018 w. Hope & David (AUDIO),Double J RADIO
Музыка
Australian internet radio host Karen Leng interviewed Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval and David Roback in ABC Sydney's radio studios. Double J internet radio is owned by the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corp.), Australia's public broadcaster. This is one of two different Australia radio interviews Hope & David did on this same day. The other one (for ABC Radio Melbourne with host Myf Warhurst) I've also upped to yt, here: • Mazzy Star INTERVIEW J...
Mazzy Star was in Australia playing shows on three consecutive nights at the Sydney Opera House, June 11, 12, and 13, 2018 for the annual Vivid Sydney Festival.
With the music edited out, the interview is now 28 minutes long.
The original show was 1-hour. The host played several songs she chose and played prior to the interview portion. Those songs were: "Fade Into You" (Mazzy Star cover by J Mascis), "I Look Around" by Rain Parade (David Roback's early 1980s band),and "Flowers in December" by Mazzy Star. During the interview and at its end the host played some more studio recordings. Those were: "Halah" by Mazzy Star, "Supernova" by Opal, "Disappear" by Mazzy Star, and "So Tonight That I Might See" (original 1993 version) by Mazzy Star. I edited out the music and left the interview portions intact and complete.
At my alternate yt Channel "Hermesacat2" is audio of another Mazzy Star interview from 2013, here:
• Mazzy Star INTERVIEW (...
If you check my main yt Channel here ("Hermesacat") you'll also find three radio interviews with Hope and Colm of Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions, two from 2016, and one from 2017.
I've upped audio of the entire June 11 Sydney show recorded by David Cosgrove who sent me his recording so I could further share it with fans on his behalf. Thank you David. • Video
I've also upped a video compilation I assembled of audience videos of Mazzy Star performing portions of 11 different songs from their Sydney shows June 11-13, here:
• Mazzy Star - SYDNEY, 2...
Photo credits: Ellen Ane Eggen for the thumbnail pic of David. Luz Gallardo for the thumbnail of Hope plus one Hope pic in the slide show. Gotta hand it to Karen, gracefully struggling to interview the two most introverted musicians on the planet. Tough gig.

She is not a great interviewer. She ends her questions too specifically. That leads to short responses that just answer the question.
Hope is notoriously shy and awkward.... so it’s actually nice to hear her laughing and having fun in this interview. We all miss Dave 😢

How strange her voice hasn't changed since her 20s! Most people's speaking voice becomes more scratchy as they get older but not hers.
It’s bittersweet that this is the first time I’ve ever heard either of their speaking voices (let alone Hope’s laugh) on this the day of Dave Roback’s passing. However, it was very comforting to hear them both enthusiastic and relaxed. Rest in peace, Dave... 😢

I think the interviewer did a really good job in making both of them feel comfortable here. I really liked the personal and emotional frame she gave the interview.
This is what I imagine a real immortal being to be like. Hope Sandoval. They are quiet and timeless as time does not move for her as it moves for others. A quiet gentle wisdom that is powerfully current.

However, these days she's mostly shy ON stage, not off, apparently. I read a number of accounts of fans meeting her in various cities on her 2017 Hope Sandoval and The Warm Inventions tour and she was reportedly open, friendly, welcoming, talkative, even bubbly with fans - the opposite of her usual stage demeanor. Although if you want to hear an unusually talkative Hope ON stage, check out the 2017 Sonoma show I've uploaded to my Channel. You may be surprised!

i can not explain how sorry i feel for hope. these beautiful yet introverted people really found each other and i can imagine hope to feel like a part of her is missing since david passed away. rest in peace.
I remember seeing these two together at LAX many years ago. They both looked so mellow. David's death is unbelievably sad. When I saw them live in LA I thought, what a perfect musical union if there ever was one.
Musical purists in it for the right reasons... timeless style and grace.
this girls so beautiful. and her voice. wow
I'm really just discovering these guys now after Daves passing, the world needs more of these types of true artists!
Not shy or awkward, just private. Traveling to Germany to replace Kendra when she was 18 takes +confidence. Backstage she’s very vocal and doesn’t mince words.
I recently discovered this amazing band. I’m originally from Spain and I don’t remember to listen to Mazzy Star back in the 90’s. Where in the world have I been, true story... I can imagine a million of places and situations where their music would it just perfect. When I listen to your music I feel 20 again, so great!!!
INTERVIEWER: How do you make your albums? Do you start with a lot of songs and then hone them into a coherent album? ROBACK: Well, maybe we'd like to make albums that are incoherent almost as much as we would like to make albums which are coherent. INTERVIEWER: I love that. What's your most incoherent album? SANDOVAL (LAUGHING): All of them!

Very good. Thank you for showing this to me.
YOUR MUSIC IS TIMELESS DAVID ROBACK. THANK YOU
Oh my god! I adore her voice !
Really enjoyed this interview. David was a very cerebral guy and very articulate, and Hope well what can I say? She can do no wrong in my book! Singing, songwriting lyrics and music, talking, looking stunningly beautiful, having nice long hair and wearing nice dresses, and yes her stage presence. I appreciate that she loves music enough to force herself to get up there in front of the band despite her never-ending stage fright and do such a phenomenal job. If she does her best in the dark with her eyes closed in the blue light, then I love that too. Her speaking voice is as lovely as her singing.
This is the first interview I have ever heard with them. Melancholy.
many artists suffer with stage fright and have taken drugs to conquer their nerves. Stick to the wine lovely Hope
this is so beautiful, ive never heard anyone even mention OPAL & theyve always been one of ,my favourite bands, right on

They're amazing.

Disagree. Her voice (both singing and speaking) has deepened some over time. She's also added things (ways of phrasing, etc.) to her singing style over time. She uses her voice in some ways she never did years ago, imo, especially in her Warm Inventions recordings. Her 1990s era Mazzy Star songs she still tends to sing in 1990s style. Many of the "new" Mazzy Star songs released since 2011 are actually older, 1990s era songs they played live in the '90s but never released till years later.

I'm still madly in love with her all these years later. You know you've got it bad when you know that you would marry her today if you have the opportunity even though you've never met her 🤣😭

It's funny that they're called introverted and difficult to interview. Personally I wish I were brave enough, if I ever do anything positive enough to be interviewed many times for, to be able to respond so normally to the weird, uncomfortable process. All the dumb questions, the faked enthusiasm, the narrative being constructed in front of you that you aren't allowed to question.

@Bobjb999

Many people who DO attend her shows also like to take their "drug" with them to take photos and videos. She hates the flashes the most. "You all have those jackass flash phones," she once said at a show. She also once inserted a phrase like "STOP using those camera phones" right in the middle of a song she was singing. There are signs at all her show venues of the past 15 years that inform attendees camera use is banned, and the ban will be enforced. People often ignore the ban though except in cities that respect artists such as Seattle (I've twice witnessed well-behaved Seattle audiences at her shows (one Mazzy show, one Warm Inventions one). They don't chatter and they don't take pictures when asked not to.
Dont understand why she chose a career in music if she's shy singing...many of us dislike our jobs but are locked in them for survival to support our families & pay the bills

Well, some people love what's inside of them that they can share through art, and maybe others just love the show more than the substance. I'm a 34-year-old substitute teacher and going through the dis-illusion from a decade and before, when college knowledge shatters against the real world, I've found myself learning to like the "show" of being a mister more than the thirst for knowledge itself. Nothing hostile or dis-agreeing here, just my answer to a common question
