I was never worried it was rod knock, too feint and high pitched for that usually. I was worried it was a loose valve lifter, which is a cheap component, but you literally have to strip your entire engine bare to get at them. Thank God it's normal 😂

This vid was so helpful! I just bought a 2021 Mazda3 Premium hb w/12k miles and the dealership turned out to be scummy (charged for KARR Alarm scam wo my knowledge etc) so I was worried the valves were going since the oil was filthy even tho they said they changed it 154mi ago. Also battery failed load test. I’m so happy to hear it’s just the new SkyActivG engine! You made my month!! Do you know if the “12v battery in danger” warning on the dash/speedo is supposed to go on EVERY time I get in the car? Seems wrong.

Fantastic video. So glad I stumbled across this. Coming from a German vehicle, I was concerned about my brand new CX5, and why there were so many random loud sounds and high revs at a cold start up. So glad to learn that this is normal function of this manufacturers engine. The mechanic had indicated as such, but I was skeptical. Having seen your video along with these explanations, it has alleviated those concerns.

FIY the clicking noise at the 2:20 mark is coming from the vacuum pump not the fuel pump. In general, sound in a direct injection engine is mostly generated by clicking injectors (as the solenoid within needs to overcome a very high fuel pressure). In mazda’s case they have added a vacuum pump for the brake booster, as scyactiv engines do not generate vacuum at idle, and it is the primary source of the clicking noise you hear

  • @Driver67

    @Driver67

    3 жыл бұрын

I have to disagree and agree with you. The high pressure fuel pump does cause the clicking as it is directly cam driven. The vacuum pump is in fact located beside the high pressure pump but I do not know how much operational sound the vacuum pump makes. When it is very hot, the high pressure pump location does make lesser sound than the injectors. The high pressure pumps on the Mazda DISI engine does make quite a bit of clicking as well but the injectors on those are usually louder.

Actually, just as an addendum these types of quite loud cold start noises are fairly common these days. Even an old 2007 2.0 litre Hyundai i30 with the G4GC engine is amazingly diesel-like in sound on its first cold start of the day. Lots of loud clacking in the Hyundai mainly attributable to solid bucket tappets makes it sound exactly like a diesel for the first 15 or 20 seconds. So the Mazda SkyActiv is actually quite a sweet and smooth sounding modern engine. No worse and actually quite a bit better than most but still fairly typical in the type of noise its making. Good reliable motors that someone elsewhere mentioned they had put nearly 400,000 miles on (nearly 600,000 km) in their 2015 Mazda 6, so that's good news

We bought new the 2017.5 Mazda 6, 2.5L Grand touring. We love the car but I have not been a fan of the way the engine sounds. Thank you for outlining what and why it sounds the way it does and that it is normal.

I own the same car for 3 years and I think it's normal sound while cold weather. Don't worry.

It sets the ignition timing to -20⁰ (or 20⁰ ATDC) to speed up engine warm-up, namely the exhaust system. It doesn't do it as long in warmer weather. There is a TSB on it. A small amount of noise (like piston slap/valve noise) when cold, that stops when warm, is normal and OK.

Yeah I noticed that the engine always sounds really loud on a cold start but then quiets down after a few seconds. And if I restart the engine shortly after turning it off again, it goes straight to the quiet phase.

That's Oke, don't worry! Can be the belt tensioner and water pump cause attach outside from the engine, those can make noise.Just normal running sound. No engine light, that is the most important thing

The sound better when you modified your exhaust and every morning you always get excited to start your car in the morning and your mood will turn good

also be sure that the engine cover is on correctly, if not the vibrations will make it shudder and make you think you have a head gasket issue

Awesome video - thanks for posting. I've known about the high revs during cold start - but was not aware of the retarded timing to allow gasses to heat the catalytic converter. The car does warm up super fast. I can feel heat warming the cabin in less than one mile after startup. Gas mileage is amazing on these engines.

When I was with Mazda and the first SkyActiv engines came in, we thought something was wrong. Good thing they put the staff through training and teach staff what was different. Was a common questions with shoppers

I traded my 2020 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab 4x4 for a 2021 Mazda Mazda6 Signature. I had trucks for many years and now Im old and want something more comfortable. I love my Mazda so much that I frequently take the long way home. I put Prolong in with the oil at around 24000 miles. Ive put it all my vehicles including a 1987 Wellcraft Nova XL! The boat is still running with absolutely no issues. Its a legend in my neck of the lake. Im confident the Mazda6 will go a solid 200k miles, maybe more.

Mazda's Skyactiv petrol engines are the first I've seen, that if something was going wrong I wouldn't be able to hear it - no matter cold or warm. They don't sound nice (idling under the hood at least) but as far as I know they are very reliable.

I recently bought a Mazda 2 1.5L 90HP 2022 and I was wondering what was that sound until I start listening the motor. I guess Mazda has created a beautiful motor. I coudn't believe 1.5L spends so little fuel. Incredible.

Went to buy from Hertz today a 2018 CX5 grand touring, beautiful car but upon start up it had a very prominent loud ticking noise. Pulled another similar CX5 alongside it and it didn't have anywhere near the volume of tick. I called the deal off, they took it to a Mazda shop for examination...I'll wait to see what that reveals.
