    IMO, I can't imagine a front wheel drive car being more fun than an MX5. How do you do power slides, drifts and donuts with a FWD? Sliding the rear end around a tight corner is awesome fun. All the FWD cars I've owned and driven have understeered in the corners. My MX5 inspires more confidence in me than any FWD and has made me a better driver.

  • @CarSauce

    @CarSauce

    3 жыл бұрын

    It's a great question, and there's no doubt a RWD is a better driving car than a FWD! As I said in the review, it's the theatre - fighting the steering wheel because of torque steer, the stupid noises the i30 makes out of its bum, the turbo boost. Again, I concede it's likely immaturity that makes me like the i30 so much! But I do, and I can't help it 🙂

  • @nealcarlson8128
    @nealcarlson81283 жыл бұрын

    Well done review, your personality shines through. Clean audio. I'd recommend you try to find a better looking area to drive around. Where you drove was ok, but some nice roads would engage me a bit more than normal suburbia. Also, I think you can end the review that you wouldn't buy the car because of practicality. Mentioning that it doesn't speak to your emotions doesn't make sense without more explanation, the rest of the review you gushed about it. And mentioning that you'd rather have 4 door hatchback also doesn't make sense - nobody cross shops a Miata with a 4 door hatchback. If this was a Golf review it would make sense that you prefer another 4 door hatchback.

  • @CarSauce

    @CarSauce

    3 жыл бұрын

    Fair enough points Neal! Though I should have made it clearer, considering they are around the same price that's why I mentioned the i30 N. The truth is the MX-5 just doesn't have real 1:1 competition! Thanks for the comment 🙂

    Great review. I have a GT Sport Tech in External Blue with Burgundy Nappa leather interior and it’s a sweet combo. I would have mentioned the LED Adaptive Headlights which are just superb. They auto dip for oncoming traffic but only the side from where traffic is coming from, leaving the other side on full beam. If following a car they effectively dip the centre but draw a U of light around the car projecting full beam down each side of the car in front. They light left or right as you turn and also auto dim in street lit areas and as you slow for junctions etc. You literally can just everywhere on full beam on night. I am in the UK so I am not sure if the same features are available in all countries.

    I was trying to rent the MX5 soft top for months, the hire car company called me to tell me that they had an MX5 for me to try, the RF version. Wow, never expected the sensational feeling that comes with driving this beauty. I had the car for 10 days, I drove at any excuse, “ forgot to buy water? It’s ok, I’ll go get it. “……every day was a good day with the shapely roadster parked outside my house ready to drive , calling me to drive, even in a heatwave, I just put the top up and air con on. Mine was an automatic, white pearl with a sport button which was crazeeeee good, feeling that life shot enter my veins, oh my! I felt at one with the car, even the seats fitted me perfectly, I’m going to buy myself an MX5 for Christmas.

    MX5 soft top looks better than the hard top. The BIG advantage it has over those hi hum other cars you mentioned... THE OPEN TOP! They don't have that! And in the soft top the 'open' feel is better than the hard top which only has the top of the roof removed, not the entire top. I have Mk3 electric hard top and that is fully open when the roof is down - it;s why I have not changed it for the latest version.

    I'm torn between RF GR or the new RF GT RS :( I'm worried the bilstein suspension is too stiff for everyday driving.

    You want an LSD for the fun factor, so you have to get the sport suspension. I daily my Club edition and do all day drives with no probs.

    the only reason Im having a second thought about buying a MX-5 is Im bit too tall (6'3") for this little spud.

    I used to be envious of tall people till I started driving Miatas. The new ND2 has telescopic steering wheel and there are aftermarket seat mods for tallish people. The BRZ/86 might be a better fit.

    I have a 2008 Mazda MX-5 PRHT which I bought new and it has being very satisfying to own. However, in May of this year both electric motors that opens and closes the roof broke down and it cost me over $2000 to fix it and I was without a car for three weeks. If I ever buy another MX-5 it would have to be without the powered roof and instead buy it with the manual soft top. If the softop roof breaks down it would be easier and less expensive to replace than fixing an electric motor-driven roof.

    So Matt, my question would be why buy the RF over the Roadster? I can only imagine it is someone who loves that specific styling, or perhaps wants an MX5 driving experience with more body rigidity. For me I accept the MX5 practically compromises because it is a roadster, a full convertible, and to me I love the open air all around me. I haven't driven the RF. I just bought a 2005 6 speed manual NC, but worked for Mazda Australia for 5 years when the NA came out and drove the NA a lot and have been waiting for life circumstances to afford me the luxury of a 2 seater for 31 years.. I'll be interested to see your thoughts on the Roadster v the RF once you've driven the Roadster. For me a targa isn't a convertible.

    Great question! As I said in the review, for me I liked the privacy aspect. I'm an introvert, so I don't always like people being able to peer in my car. For most who buy the RF, it's probably styling. I totally agree the standard convertible would be a better open air experience, no doubt 🙂

    I chose the RF due to all of these:- preferring how it looks, better security, powered operation (even better when smart-top mod done), no deterioration of roof to worry about.

    @@68UltraViolet I also got RF for those reasons. Just make sure to maintain those rubber seals. As soon as they dry out, they will start to leak, so it's recommended to use some kind of seal grease.

    On lowering I think you mentioned 5mm. That seemed too little to get much of a gain. On doing some googling it seems 25 to 35mm is the most common. mx5vic.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/lowering_your_MX-5.pdf
