Mazda Infotainment Review and Menu Tutorial

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We dive deep into the Mazda infotainment menus and discuss the nuances of the command knob controlled touch-less screen. After 10,000 miles with the system we have grown to really like the screen quality and control wheel interface of the Mazda3 infotainment system. It’s a polarizing topic as touch screens are all the rage, but give the Mazda interface some time and it becomes very easy to use. We go through each menu in the system and discuss how to scroll through and use the Apple CarPlay menus.

After having this system, can't go back to touch. It's much easier to use while driving because it combines three important things. 1. Muscle memory 2. Awesome tactile feedback 3. Perfect placement for viewing the road Touchscreens generally don't have any of these. Other awesome thing is no capacitive touch buttons - they're a sign of cost saving and super nasty (yes, Mercedes looking at you)

I have to say I test drove the 3 and the screen was placed in a very good spot as unlike the Corolla or the Civic in where you need to move your eyesight a bit more, only bad thing about this is that the wheel system is not best optimized for CarPlay, would like it if they had the option for both a touchscreen or a wheel, but it isn’t a make or break deal for me, it’s just one small thing in an otherwise great car

The first thing you need to do whenever you buy a new Mazda that has this infotainment system is to sit down and go through exactly how everything works. As you demonstrated there are many settings in there and it does take a while to familiarize yourself with them. That said, once you get everything set how you like it. Your day-to-day interactions are going to be basically entertainment navigation and possibly sending and receiving phone calls. All of those can be quickly done with the rotary wheel on the console or the phone controls on the steering wheel You never have to take your eyes off the road. It is a very nice system and I like the fact that the screen is not a touch screen or a giant slab like an iPad sticking up off the top of the dash blocking my forward view. You can tell that the design team at Mazda put some thought into this and made it where once you have your settings done, you rarely have to get into too many menus to use it on a day-to-day basis. It is easy to use and it is safe and that is important.

I think the automatic parking break is actually pretty useful since it can protect your parking pawl (a very small piece that locks your transmission when you put into Park). If the parking pawl is damaged or worn and has to be replaced, the transmission will have to be pulled apart which can be expensive.

I have a question for you or anyone who's used this system. I currently have a 2018 Mazda6 with the old infotainment system and I'm looking at getting a Mazda3 with this new one. How is it with auto-playing after you get in/out of the car? The 2018 is MADDENING in how it will just auto play whatever you had going even if it was all turned off. For instance, if I had been listening to a podcast, get out of the car to run into the store, and then get back in, the podcast starts right back up. Or...if everything had been off, I take a phone call, then once the phone call is through, my music starts playing. I completely hate that. Now, if I WAS listening to something before taking the phone call, I get it, and that's exactly what should happen. But why a phone call "starts up" whatever had been playing, I don't know. I'm curious if anyone else has figured out what triggers it or not, and if this newer system has some way to turn auto-play on or off.

Hi Jon. I am thinking this could be an apple car play thing if that is your question. If I shut the car down while listening to a pod cast, unhook phone and get out, it will start playing immediately next time. I admit that can be annoying. Now if I intentionally stop the podcast before disconnecting and getting out it will not restart. I can double check to make sure I have this right. I am not sure about the phone call one. That is annoying and strange. But again, I will try and test that out. I do know the podcast restart thing was present in our VW with CarPlay also. I will try to get some video of what I find out. Thanks for the question!

It is quiet interesting that you dont have the vehicle status setting, where you can see which cilinders are deactivated or at the SkyX the SPCCI and co. Also it is interesting that you dont have the navigation, beacause as far as I know, In Germany you get the Navigation for free in every Mazda. Once you have mastered this system, it is absolutely nice and this brought me finally to buying this car. I absolutely love how fast the system boots, because it is already on after I push the button and it is very responsive. You can do favorites by long pressing the favourite button e.g. at a radio station. As far as I know, you cant use it in Car Play. Those of us who like performance driving may use the throttle and brake at the same time, in effort to balance the car properly. Never understood why manufacturers want to eliminate that except for those who "ride" the brake. Also, since the home button has multiple functions and is context sensitive, is the audio button also context sensitive? Will two presses or a hold bring you to your audio settings?

  • @BeyondTheTestDrive

Great questions. You can turn off the pedal misuse for sporty driving. While the audio button does not have a long press feature like the home button it will toggle between the audio source menu and the main entertainment menu. A single press will take you to your audio sources. Another press will take you over to the entertainment menu. Press again and it’s back to audio sources. Just got an M3 and love the infotainment system. One thing though is in CarPlay I have hundreds of artists listed and it takes forever to scroll down the alphabet. (Dangerous too when driving.) Would like to be able to jump to a letter - say, k names - and search from there. I managed to bring up a screen to do that once but have no idea how I got there. The pros is that you don’t need line of sight and can remote start from far away. Cons are that it depends on an up and running network (which has been 99.9% reliable for me) and Mazda only gives you the remote feature free for about two years. After that it is a subscription. Not a cool thing. Hope this helps.

    Жыл бұрын

Hi Katie, thanks for your question. Do you mean GLI versus Mazda3? I am assuming so. Having owned both they are completely different cars with different personalities. For all out performance, handling, space, and tuneability the VW GLI/GTI wins. If you want a more comfortable and quiet car that is also fun to drive the Mazda 3 is a great choice. We do prefer the 3 because despite its lower performance the car feels more responsive and lively than the VWs. There are tunes for the VW you can buy that will eliminate its dead pedal feeling below 1700 rpm but it’s still another thing to buy. Turbo lag and the transmission tuning to get in highest gear as possible makes the GLI a little bit of a bore in everyday driving, where the 3 is eager to go when you are just heading to the grocery store and not trying to tear it up. But interior quality is what we really enjoy with the 3. It’s just a nicer car to spend time in. But if I were auto crossing or wanting to mod then VW is the choice. Hope this helps.

I don't want the map displayed if I'm not navigating anywhere and it appears whether I have my phone's GPS on or not. Until recently you could switch displays between audio and map using the center knob; easy. Recently it's been "revised" to make it MORE COMPLICATED to do! Back up camera is only slightly better than the camera on an early 2000's flip phone. As much as I would love to buy a Mazda SUV for a daily driver, until this system is improved it's a deal breaker for me.

Hi Greg and thanks for commenting. The MX-5 is definitely a bucket list kind of car but Mazda does need to update that one’s infotainment setup and features. Remember that the Miata has an older version of the infotainment system. It works similarly but the newer SUVs' system is smoother, faster and higher resolution than in the MX-5. The newer system has other frustrations, though. Of course, if you're all about CarPlay then it doesn't really matter - it's the same "knobby" experience. Also, you must have a Sport model MX-5 because the Club & GTs both have wireless CarPlay (although wired is more reliable). Same with the CX-50 (but not other SUVs).

@@kensturrock9203 I have the GT. As I as understand the '22 model had wireless carplay though it is mysteriously absent in the '23 model (perhaps maybe just for the Canadian market?). That being said, Wireless is not a deal breaker for me, simple enough to use a short cable to connect, it's moreso the lack of the ability use use touchscreen while driving. It is much quicker (and in my opinion safer) to use a quick motion to navigate carplay vs having to twist/turn/push which takes more attention off the road. My daily is a GM and their infotainment integration is far superior, surprising as I figured a Japanese manufacturer would be further advanced.
