Last week we reviewed the 2.2 twin-turbo diesel version of the Mazda CX-5, which is a niche choice in the Australian-spec CX-5 but one we like. This week, Ponch brings you the other high-powered CX-5 engine: the 2.5 turbo petrol that Mazda pinches from the CX-9 large SUV. Understandably, it feels pretty strong in the much smaller, much lighter CX-5 midsize SUV! So, should you specify the 170kW 2.5L turbo AWD in your CX-5?
The Mazda CX-5 competes with the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan, Ford Escape and others.

Nice vid Ponch.
Very impressed with today’s Turbo’s Took a 2.5GT Turbo out on a drive. Freeway and Hill work and my wife has never driven a Turbo machine before. Back in the early years of Turbo Charging. You would have normal Engine power till around 2000 RPM. Then you would feel the Turbo kick in and hang on. Today’s Turbo’s operation is more like the Superchargers More even power under hard acceleration. Very very impressed by Performance
Filled the spot left by Subaru Forester XT...take note Subaru Australia.

Sorry the clear description of the engine’s driving characteristics - that you received at no cost - disappointed.
Totally agree on the seat. I own the Mazda 3 BP, despite Mazda spent about an hour to introduce the new seat they have in the 3, the base is still way too short. I’m only 178cm but the seat only covers up to slightly more than half my leg length before reaching the knee. So I never drive it for long distance.
I have a 2019 2.2 BITurbo Diesel 184 HP Very comfortable car ❤️
Thanks for the great review Ponch. I really feel like SP seats are a downgrade from the regular GT, moving from leather to Maztex. Would have been more special to get the burgundy leather like the Mazda 6 SP.
Have a 2021 Akera Turbo Petrol. Fantastic car! Really fun to drive!

How's the infotainment system and the control dial? That's the only reason I'm holding back from getting it

@@vinayshsureshram277 it works great, got used to it very quickly. I also use voice control a lot (only got to know about it when I picked up the car). It has been brilliant.
Such a nice car
Great review Ponch. But what's the go with those shoes? 😅
Thanks for the review. I think I would go for the GT Turbo as you recommend, I cant see the value or the necessity for the SP.
Have a 2020 GT turbo petrol. Great car and turbo petrol makes for effortless driving. Choose the GT as think they have the best looking wheels in the range. Larger entertainment screen that is now in 2021 models would be nice.
The other thing about Mazda is it Cruise Control. When you switch it on. It stays on all the time which I like
Didn’t John already review the GT SP? Not complaining though, keep the content coming!

Yeah, bit of a mix-up in our request so we had Ponch do more of a focussed “turbo petrol” review. Just lockdown things. That’s over now thankfully!
Going to the dealership tomorrow to ask for the CX-5 with 4 engines 😂
Really appreciated your review, it helped us decide to spend the extra $$ and get the GT Turbo ahead of other SUVs we were considering. Both my wife and I were super impressed by the how smooth and powerful the engine in this car is. Looking forward to picking it up next week!
Great review, Mr Ponchard! What do you think of the standard Toyo tyres that come on the SP? Would it be worth upgrading them to something from Continental or Michelin at purchase time? I’m especially interested in braking and cornering in the wet… do you think the Toyos are up to the job? Cheers! Mike
So many Kia and Hyundai and Mazda cars. Can we get a review on the new plug in hybrid Volvos please ?

This review is on a 2021 Model Mazda CX5 SP not a 2022. The 2022 Model SP has full black leather seats with red stitching and has a gloss black wing at the front which extends around the base vehicle including the wheel arches. Has different shaped head and Tail lights. seats have bean made more comfortable and suspension adjusted, Turbo power is increased by 6HP, changes to the cargo space, wireless phone charging along with a few other minor changes. Aside from calling this 2021 model a 2022 model this is a good review on a 2021 model. Please provide accurate model details in future reviews
Have a 2019 Akera Diesel great car getting the Turbo Petrol next month

I could go either way with the turbo petrol or diesel model. What differences do see as to choose a petrol over the diesel?

Why?

@@Nicko_1 Diesel model has got that diesel oomph and slightly jerky particularly when going from zero, and good fuel economy. Turbo petrol is more uniformly smooth in that respect, and still feels as if it has more power than the diesel even after 100km/h.
I prefer the Diesel. Plenty of performance for a daily driver and with plenty of low down torque you barely go over 2k rpm (It's the twin turbos that makes the difference) I don't need crazy performance because my other car is a 700hp Harrop supercharged VFII SSV Redline
Rly wished they just blacked out all the chrome parts
@chasingcars 2022 or 2021? Title says 2021 but opening line says 2022?
The CX-5 Product Manager must have been on an all night piss up in Tokyo to let this fiassco happen - Maztex and the same ol Black Pack/Black Edition as other manufacturers. The only upswing is when the Black happens, the new product is just around the corner. B. O. R. I. N. G - GT SP - Grand Touring - Substandard Pack!
Even the base Escape gets a more powerful engine. When your paying less why get a lesser engine. I felt ripped off with my Rio getting a crappy 1.4L N/A motor. I wanted the turbo motor but I wanted cloth seats. I would pay more to have the better engine in the lower spec car sometimes.

Had a drive in the Ford couple months ago nice car and goes like a rocket for a low spec SUV...
While we can't deny Mazda's skills at building vehicles and making them reliable, I think the design is getting old and boring. I sure am looking forward to a brand new look and appeal.
I just find the CX5 a boring looking car. Obviously practical and a decent performer. Needs a body kit or something.
First 👍
Halogen blinkers 😭
Black alloys are so 2010..

Wake up Subaru.
Mazda's, still all bonnet and no boot - only 442 litres.
