    One must take great care with that wrench trick. Once you get it to grip properly, it is very important to keep adequate tension to hold them in the se alignment and to NEVER alter the alignment while applying force. I learned that the hard way and my fingers hurt for a week.

    Thanks a bunch man, you saved me. I was trying to install a new v belt ( the smaller one) and it just wasnt going in. I was trying to use a small prying tool to help it in while turning the crank pulley, but it just wasnt happening. I would have never imagined that it would be as simple as pushing the belt in with your fingers, while turning of course. Thanks again.

    Thank you for your excellent video, It was an immense help. The rag to get the belt off was a great trick that I had never seen before. I used some thin webbing and had my son pull the ends of it through the wheel. In retrospect it probably would have been better to remove the wheel. I have two comments however, I could get not get the stretchy water pump belt on the smaller diameter of the hub like you did. The way I got it on was from the back side of the pulley. Also, I could not get the other belt on the crankshaft pulley like you did. I had to have someone help me put it on the top on the alternator pulley while I held the tensioner from below. I saw someone wrote a comment that you turn the crankshaft counterclockwise. That's probably not a good thing to do. Thanks again for making a great video.

  • @FelixDanGarasiAuto

    @FelixDanGarasiAuto

    glad it works out, about the rotation of crankshaft pulley. I think in the video i did rotate “clockwise” but i mistakenly / falsely stated “counterclockwise” direction. But yeah just follow my video as per direction clockwise rotation correctly. it is a very tight space if you dont remove the wheel to access the belts.

    A couple of follow-ups after replacing these two belts on my 2014 CX-5. At 60K miles (not Km) the original belts had no signs of cracking or slight wear like yours did. I put them in the car in case of emergency. Noted the OEM water pump belt was Made In France and the replacement belt said Made In China - for what that is worth. Your nice camera work is somewhat deceptive as there isn't much room to access the tensioner pulley once the wheel well splash shield is removed. It's a tight fit to get the 17mm wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt. Also, removing the spark plugs made turning the crank so much easier. Recommended. Finally, I had lots of trouble getting the new water pump belt on as it kept slipping off the pulley as I rotated the engine. Be patient if that happens to you. And spin the crank multiple times after both belts are on like FD to ensure they are in the pulley grooves. My serpentine belt wasn't on the AC pulley correctly and I seated it properly while spinning the crank. Great video Felix, thanks again and hello from The Great State of Texas!

    My wife called from the interstate today and described losing the alternator belt. (2017 CX-5) She was 200 miles away and your video was a great reference to make sure I had everything I needed to do the repair confidently in a parking lot. BTW, the belt was CRAZY tight even with the tensioner released to the limit. I got the belt on about a quarter of an an inch and then bumped the starter. That did the trick and the belt went into proper position. Thanks!

    I just did it by following your instructions. Thanks, you saved me hundreds of dollars, plus I have been able to do it when I wanted. Note: The 17mm wrench is required as a socket+ratchet doesn’t fit because it’s too tight

    For some reason 17mm sockets and wrenches were not part of my old Craftsman sets either but I had another set that had them. I tried every wrench combo I had and the 17mm box end was the only one that would fit in the tight space. I wanted to use a long breaker bar and socket or crowsfoot socket. The box end wrench wasn't long enough to get leverage so I had to use the two wrench trick. Also I thought I wasn't going to be able to get the tensioner to move at first. Never dealt with a hydraulic tensioner before. You need to apply pressure and it will slowly move, it feels like you are rounding off the hex head before it moves. My belts has 122,000 miles and 7 years on them and pieces of the ribbing were missing.

UPDATE: The next day, still 2021. For those who do have the 2013 Mazda Touring 2.0 like i do, the part place said i needed a stretch belt for my water pump instead of the one used in this video. So, i bought one. Hissss....Little did i realize that i would ALSO need a #$?* stretch belt tool thinga'ma-jig! (e.g., Gates 91030 Micro-V Stretch Fit Installation Tool, Dayco Stretch Tool #93875, or OEMTOOLS Easy On Stretch Belt Installation Tool #24362). There is a slight possibility i may also use a few zip ties on the water pump pully side, but that's another story.
