Gone are the days when all People Carriers really had to do was to come up with clever ways to carry people. Today, in the face of competition from Crossovers, SUVs and ever more versatile family hatches, MPVs have to be a bit more exciting and aspirational, Especially if they want a slice of the medium-sized volume sector where Zafiras, Scenics, C-MAXs and Picassos hold sway. Back in 2010, this second generation Mazda5 promised to be exactly that. How does it stack up as a used buy?
History
We're born, we grow up, we get married, we have kids, we buy a People Carrier. There's sometimes a crushing predictability to the path life takes isn't there? The MPV is seen both as great facilitator of successful family life and as the type of car that happens to people when their commitments finally nail the coffin lid shut on their desires. Not that it has to be like that of course. MPVs can be cool, stylish and fun but they just have to be a bit cleverer about it. And this second generation Mazda5 claimed to be one seven-seater that had its thinking cap on.
Though half a million examples of the original MK1 model Mazda5 were sold worldwide, it was always something of a minority choice in the UK, forgotten by a Zafira, Picasso and Scenic-buying 7-seat mini-MPV target audience constantly preoccupied by dirty nappies, first steps and forgotten PE kits. And this despite its unique provision in the mini-MPV class of the kind of useful sliding side doors that until the MK1 Mazda5's original introduction in 2005, had been limited to much larger People Carriers. Hence the need in 2010 for a MK2 model able to keep much of what made the original work but wrap it in a package more likely to get noticed. It sold until 2016 and wasn't replaced.

I have a first-generation 5 and love it. It's such a great balance of fun and practicality. Mine's a manual and it handles much like the Mazda 3 that it shares a platform with. Good mileage, too.

I love my 2012 Mazda 5. It's the perfect car for city drivers that have small kids. I never have to worry about them banging the door of another car. Plus it turns on a dime.

In 2021 my husband and I replaced our Mazda5 2008 with a Mazda 5 2014. The second generation is a nice upgrade. Eventhough our daughter was 20 when we replaced this car with the upgrade, we bought it to haul our aging parents around. Oh btw we live is in the USA.

216 k miles on mine. It's an absolute joy to drive takes off like a rocket from a stop but going on to the interstate the horsepower is definitely lacking. Don't like the cockpit at all that swoopy closed in design is really terrible. Haven't had any significant problems with the transmission except for an axle seal leak on the driver's side. And that's segways into the biggest problem with this Mazda vehicle is anything rubber. rubber boots seals. I've spent more time replacing parts that involve rubber boots and rubber seals that crack and leak! I'm wondering if Mazda didn't use a Chinese parts supplier for their rubber. Replaced the spark plugs after I got it at 141 k and my fuel economy really took off from there. Tremendous improvement but then after about 35 k on the new spark plugs fuel economy started to drop again and now at 75 k I have replaced the spark plugs with the narrower Gapped plugs from NGK, and I have not yet figured out how much of a difference that makes but it looks like it's an improvement.

I don't think you'll get anything like that in this model--I bought one for my daughter after her 2018 graduation, and it had 120K miles on it. She's now at 140K on it, and I need to replace the original axles on each side, but it's been very reliable for the most part (did replace the original battery in 2019). She loves it, and wants to get it to 200K miles. We maintain it on a regular schedule.

@@lego4virgohow much did it cost to replace the axles? I just purchased a 2013 mazda 5 today with 108k miles

@@minicomponentsystemsofthe9208 So, Mazda wanted something like $1500.00 for the whole thing, but my local garage quoted me $850.00. So, I'd check around and see what prices you get. If you're looking at a 2013, I'd check the CV boots for any grease leaking, and see if the plugs have been replaced yet (supposed to replace at 100K--I did my own, there's a KZread video on here that shows you how). Then just the regular things to look out for: leaking valve cover gasket, make sure the oil is relatively ok (check the maintenance receipts, if there are any). Or, just get a good mechanic to look over the car. It's a great 4-seater with decent handling, and you can carry almost anything in it.
