I've repaired 2 of these by resoldering the circuit board. It seems like the common point of failure is the through-hole connector solder joints. I resoldered the whole board anyways, but the through holes had visible fracturing in the solder joints. Get them off the transmission, the heat and vibration is the problem. The connector pins coming out of the circuit board are long and bent 90 degrees, so they'll vibrate like a tuning fork and eventually the solder joint cracks. All you gotta do is peel off the epoxy at the base of the connector to get at the through-hole pins. Touch them with a soldering iron so all the solder completely re-wets. Use LOTS of flux, then clean it off with alcohol when you're done. Replace epoxy and remount off the transmission

Just did this to my TCM and it worked, no more “Lost Communication With TCM”. There’s 39 pins that you need heat up with soldering iron and add a little more solder. Removing the silicone took a while but it’s not much that needs to be removed.

This saved me $2500 easy. Got a quote from the dealership who wanted $3000 (if) they didn’t find problems with the transmission or need to program the TCM. They also quoted me $800 for the TCM alone. I found a dealership online who sent one my way for $550 including expedited shipping. No more than 1.5 hours of work (mostly just swearing at the battery box) and the car was as good as new. I can’t thank you enough for this walkthrough.

FYI- The transmission is a hot zone and causes the TCM board to get hot and flex causing problems with solder joints on the TCM PCB. You want to put the replaced/fixed TCM on the firewall. Attach it with zip ties to the brake lines on the firewall. Use a pad of rubber in between to isolate the brake lines. I have a 2007 Mazda 3 mounted that way and its still running with the original TCM.

My vehicle was needing the TCM work. I did it easily thanks to your video but now I have AT and check engine light on and vehicle still does not go into drive. Before replacement I did not have any codes or lights on. Only symptom was vehicle would not go into drive right way with a jerk and deceleration was also a huge issue. Code reader says lost communication with TCM/PCM. I took all apart again to make sure I had connections perfect. I do and still have codes and same symptoms.

I don't think the year matters as long as you get the TCM for the same transmission. For example 2011 had a 5sp trans and the 2012+ had skyactiv and 6sp trans. So, make sure to get the module for the right trans. In my video you see how the part I bought from the dealer had a newer PN revision than what I took out, but both were for the 5sp trans.

I’m getting my Mazda currently fixed for a replacement TSM but I was told “the wiring is hard and they couldn’t do it” and they ordered the part but I was told “the one we ordered wasn’t correct” “we needed to buy the one with your car the one they sell at dealerships that usally only come with a new transmission” and said they’d call me back... does that sound like a thing... or would there be two different model TCM? Apparently my Mazda has to different versions on that year and that would be the issue

The wiring being difficult doesn't really make sense to me. The wiring should be in connector housings, so there's no individual wires to deal with. Dealers should be able to get the right TCM for your vehicle with the VIN number. I suppose there could've been a year where they transitioned from the 5sp to 6sp auto, but then it should still just be a matter of getting the right TCM and plugging it in. I haven't heard of dealers only selling the TCM if you buy a new transmission.

You'd want to get a code reader to see what the problems the car is reporting. If it's the same "U0101" code as in this video, then $2k for the ECU replacement is excessive. If it's a different code, you'll want to look it up and see what others have done to repair it. A lot of times your local auto parts store will read codes for free.
