Mazda 3 / 6 Rear Brake Pad Replacement - 2014 - 2016

Replacement of a Mazda 3 rear brake pads. Since the parking brake is tied to the brake caliper, this caliper type utilizes a spiral brake piston design. The piston can only be recessed back into the caliper by screwing back into the caliper in a clockwise direction. This can be done cheaply with needle nose pliers or using a brake caliper piston compression tool kit.
Parts and Specialty Tool:
For my customers wanting quality pads at a moderate price, I've had good luck recommending the Raybestos Enhanced Hybrid Technology (EHT) pads.

    Quick, quality video. I would mention, though, that when the caliper piston is pushed in, it should be turned so the pin on the inner brake pad engages one of the slots in the piston. Otherwise, the pad will not sit flush and will wear at an angle.

    Thanks man! My back rear brake started making a barely audible squeal like that of an electric fuel pump. I thought that was the indicator, because then while I was hundreds of miles from home it started making a horrific noise. I was for sure it was metal on metal. Turns out that it was just the indicator, but man what a racket! Didn't know what it was going to take to change them, but thanks to you and one other youtuber, I got it done in a couple hours. Turning that piston was a b**ch using needle nose pliers!

    Just a heads up for others: For the REAR brakes on my 2016 MAZDA 3 ISPORT I had to push in REALLY HARD while turning the caliper piston with a caliper piston socket tool. When I just turned the piston it did not go back into the caliper--I had to push it in really hard while turning to get it to go in.

    Qq, I’ve always put little brake grease on pad tips, but every 3rd gen Mazda 3 brake vid I’ve seen so far, no one has done that. Is there mechanical reason not to apply some as I afraid that it might seize the pad wear evenness over time if not sliding freely ?

  • @hardlymovingpro

    @hardlymovingpro

    2 жыл бұрын

    Uneven pad wear is cause by caliper slide pins getting locked into the caliper bracket due to dried out brake grease. Also applying a light coat of anti-seize on the abute clips helps the ears of the pads slide during wear. The higher quality pads now come with anti-friction shims eliminating the need for any lubrication to prevent break squeal.

    Hey I have a 2016 Mazda 6. I haven’t done brake work on this car before and I’m going to soon, I watched another video and he had a 2016 Mazda 6 that has some electronic brake control he had to remove. Is that only on one side?? I saw him doing something with the electronic parking brake from the inside of his car as well where he had to put it in service mode before working on it. I’m confused. Also on his 2016, he just compressed the piston and his wasn’t a twist to compress

  • @hardlymovingpro

    @hardlymovingpro

    5 жыл бұрын

    Some newer cars are equip with electronic parking brakes. All you do is push a button then pressure is applied to the caliper pistons to prevent the car from moving. When doing a brake pad replacement service, you must deactivate the parking brake and have the ignition off. Then you can begin the pad replacement service. DO NOT turn on the ignition or push the parking brake activation button with the pads off. The caliper pistons may cycle and shoot the piston out of the caliper. With some other cars (some hybrid car I can't remember), the parking braking cycles every 5 minutes to ensure the car won't roll while being parked. Seems redundant if the transmission is in the park setting. What you can do is place a block of wood between the piston and caliper if concerned about the piston shooting out. The front brake system is usually floating or fixed compression piston type. The rears, however, can be either compression or screw piston. On the Mazda 3 I worked on, the rear were screw piston. Don't know if the Mazda 6 is the same.

  • @hardlymovingpro

    @hardlymovingpro

    5 жыл бұрын

    Good question! A lot of people add fluid to bring it back to the high mark ... which they shouldn't! As the pads wear, the caliper pistons are extended which results in fluid drop in the reservoir. To answer your question, if the pads are wearing evenly between the front and rear, you're pads should still be good; however, you should have your pads inspected at every tire rotation as well as inspection of leaks in your brake lines, master cylinder and brake booster. If you have alloy wheels, you can see the outer pad wear with a flash light. Recommended pad replacement is when there's only 3 mm of pad life left. If the brake fluid is topped off before the pads are replaced, brake fluid will be forced back into the reservoir during caliper piston compression which will result in fluid overflow in the reservoir.
