Climatization is a very important part of the process, you have to get used to its location so you don't trip over it, a process that will be lengthened by the hospital visit that would result from tripping over that monster, you also have to let the other machines sniff it and decide its not a threat, otherwise they decide to act out by having intermittent electrical problems and breaking tooling and projects

I have a an old Kearny treaker that has been seasoning nicely for some time now I'm not sure if the other things in that building have accepted it yet I should probably let it sit a bit more. at least I didn't leave it in my wife's parking spot like somebody else we know😏

I love how you deal with electrical issues, I worked for just under 35 years in a power plant retiring from the Control Room. It was my job to put (as you call them) the angry pixies in the wires. I have a very deep understanding of how it all works, having said that hearing your description I realize that you are oh so very technically correct you just don’t use industry jargon and as a result many people without my background understand it. I have turned several of my former coworkers on to your channel they also enjoy it.

What a fantastic video, I'm an electchicken myself and often get left with someone elses "it's all too hard", boxes full of disconnected wires, brilliant explanation.

I recently came across an early AvE vijao, not realizing it was AvE. I heard his voice and it was familiar but it really didn’t sound like him. He also didn’t have the unique vocabulary.

For those in the know: all decent treadmills have been using 3 phase motors and VFDs for about a decade now. Usually at about 380v on the HV DC rail.

I never understood what was going on in a 3 phase motor that has 9 wires sticking out of it. I've been around plenty of them, but had no clue to their particulars. Now I understand completely! Thanks for the knowledge!

Very good explanation! I get it now, I didn't realize at low voltage we were just creating 2 wyes in parallel.

Brilliant, this takes it to the next very clear level. I did a series on running a 3 phase motor on single phase and this takes it to the next stage with very clear analitics. Rather than changing the motor wiring from Star to delta on a 6 wire motor the decrease in coil resistance is achieved by the parallel connections, but only with a 9 wire motor. Cheers, Andy

Such good advice Ave. I train a lot of young kids just out of school. I cant get over how many of them will spend inordinate amounts of time searching on their phones for wiring diagrams of circuits that are very basic and simple to figure out. You’ve got a meter, you’ve got a pen and paper, you’ve probably got a brain, use them, figure it out, you might actually learn something and it might actually stick in your head.

You did good AVE. I'm into electronics but never three phase industrial electric. Despite that your explanation and the way you broke it down I followed it it all the way through. With a copy of your schematics I'm reasonably confident I could duplicate your audit. The one thing working to my advantage was learning boolean logic gate truth tables in my youth. Thanks.

All the AvE vids are fun and entertaining but this thing looks like its going to be absolutely jammed with teachable moments for us who don't know jack about electronicals. Looking forward to more already!

Awesome video. I never understood 3 phase and, the way you explained it made it click. As soon as I saw that first y drawing the pieces fell into place.

An Elechickens tip for labeling wires in a greasy/oily location. Don't wrap the tag around the wire, the oil will separate the sticky side from the smooth side in short order. The trick is to flag the wire, fold the tag over the wire, sticky side to sticky side, this will stick together much better. Another option if you don't have wire markers, use white electrical tape for flags and a sharpie for the outer coils, yellow tape flags for the inner coils.

Videos like this give me the confidence to shove a Spanner or spewdriver where the sun don't shine whilst at work. Pumps, boilers, valves, augers (threw a shovel down one the other day); the world is my lobster.

Learning more here than I did in circuits class in college.

Trying to figure out the wiring on a 3 phase multi voltage motor can be a real head ache especially getting all the winding phased correctly. You did a good job on breaking it down.

Westley Davis Just look at one phase. You got 2 coils for low voltage inside the motor. If you put them in series, you get 1 coil with high voltage. Put them in parallel, you get 1 coil with low voltage for that phase. To get the same power, that coil needs twice the current now compared to the windings in series. Now watch the video again.

YES! Excellent vid. I ran across this. 128 ports of WTF Ethernet Switch in the rack. 6 racks next to each other. No one labelled anything no letter no number nothing. I printed out two pages of wingdings and tagged the port and cable with the scotch tape and a "emoji" paired. To try make sense of what shmoo was confabulated on inside the tunnel of tunnels. I think my plan went too well as other consultants started to do the same type of documenting. Documenting like this is kinda like having witness marks on work pieces to line things up correctly. P.S. It was contract for worldcomm.

I never could grasp electrical wiring. My pee brain just doesn't get it. Thanks for the video. Hats off to the guys that do get it. Hope you get it running.

Mazaks are awesome man. I have been working on them for almost 10 years. We use them in out caterpillar transmission plant. They are good machines. And the mazatrols are top notch controls. Second only to fanuc. 840d is obviously last lol but ive had enough experiece to say mazak is a great choice.

Finally, the 2015 vintage mill is done aging! I’ve been waiting patiently for this. I think it will pair well with red wine. Who am I kidding, Guinness will go so much better with the high sulfur oil fumes.

six of those wires are paired anyway as one of each is the tail end of a motor coil. you can eliminate most of them belling out the motor to find out which point you need to mount your U V W wires, star and delta can be done with bridge plates. looking forward to your video on the motor wiring.

Shmoo leaking into the box is a bad thing? Wow you do learn something every day.

What was there about this mill that you found appealing? If you get it running, and apply brake, you're going to turn your front yard into your backyard, and everyone in your neighborhood that was watching TV is going to come out of their house rubbing their eyes to get vision back.

Choose, but choose wisely. A 3hp VFD is still around 200-250. You would need one of those for each machine in your shop. Granted you do get the benefit of motor speed control, but it is cost prohibitive if you have 3 or more machines. You can get a 7.5 hp rotary convertor for around 600. Also if you wind up with an older CNC machine the computer and electronics in them don't like to take the stairs and much prefer the butter smooth wave. The VFD can cause miscalculation in the old electronics or even worse let the smoke out as they were never designed to take the stairs. Both have their places and a VFD is an awesome device. But being that us tinkerers/makers/gear heads/geeks tend to rummage around for the right deal and then pounce, a rotary my be a better investment in the long run. Choose what is best for you.

Joe Garcia This video was brilliant and now for the first time I understand the windings inside a 3-phase motor. But I bought a 7hp rotary phase converter for less than $400 and it was brain-dead simple to set up and I can run two machines at once(as long as I don't start them together.) I'm now the only guy in the neighborhood with 3 phase power! I guess what I'm saying is that your comment is exactly spot on. Thanks!

I thought you were going to delve into Wye-Delta start when I saw the title. But great vid regardless. I don't get pressure (much) from management. But I get the junior mechanics behind me, asking questions and giving their theories of the problem and solution. Which is usually OK, I'm the lead so it's my job to train these guys. But sometimes we run into something that I haven't seen or haven't seen in 15 yrs, so I need some quite time alone with the patient to get my head around what's going on. At those times I gotta tell them to let me figure it out, and THEN I'll walk them through it and try to explain my troubleshooting sequence. Unfortunately I can't just hand them the meter and say there you go (usually) because they will, and I end up with more problems from someone getting tunnel vision thinking it's GOTTA BE a hydraulic issue when it's really an eletrical control problem, or vise versa. Then I do hear from management. WOW, I musta been holding some shit in. Thanks for letting me vent.

I can hardly wait to see this Mazak running. I sure hope it remains torquey enuff to make some chips after the VFD is installed!
