I like watching the altos suffer in the soli section as I just chug along with my quarter notes...

Fellow bari player I assume?
The 11 thumbs down were probably people that were physically injured by those horns. I saw these guys in 1993 and I've never seen such a powerful horn section before or since.

Me too, we're playing this song in my jazz band at school and every time the saxes play that note my friend and I look at each other and say "bup!"

Two of my teachers played in Maynard's band before he died. Probably some of the best players I've seen so far.
Tempo fluctuation is a part of being human. Missing the forest for the trees.

gooyreg Playing this in my hs band right now. Biggest issue is tempo fluctuations but we’ll get it!
This song is the craziest shit of all time for big band music.
My college jazz band opened for him in the 90s and we played this. What a wonderful musician and ambassador for the art.

My high school jazz band covered this, and did it well. both of the college bands I played in couldn’t play it.
that sax soli:)
Played this freshman year in HS in '91. I played bass bone. It was probably the hardest chart I'd seen in my young 14 years :-)

Freshman year in high school, 95. The sheet music for the bass was mostly empty, just chords, so you know, just feel it. I was only 14, so I just listened to this recording and meticulously transposed it all 😛
Takes me back to my jazz ensemble days in high school and college. ❤
Sax player's delight! I guess even Maynard had to give the saxes credit. Sax On!
the ending is so badass. especially at 7:13

Does it seem that the tempo is going alittle fast at times in the sax soli? I could be wrong, but that's the only thing that bothers me. Other than that, really great song!
@Spider2point0

They're almost pushing it; they're staying right on the front edge of the beat, so they might seem a hair fast. At least, that's how it seems to me, anyways. Great song regardless, though.

I didn't really hear it until you mentioned it, but now I really do. But as gooyreg said, tempo fluctuation is part of being human.

Because it was a challenge and the song excited them, and they're playing off each other! It's always that way with a superlative and fun piece like this!
