I've always wanted to go here and have never made it. My dad used to play Barney. He won first place in the Barney look-'a-like contest in Mt. Airy about 30 years ago. He had the uniform, the car, his gun, and his one bullet. He loved playing Barney and meeting all the different people everywhere. He met and made a lifetime friend at that contest who won first place as Andy look-alike. They traveled all over playing Andy and Barney. His friend that played Andy had passed now and my dad is 96 and is not able to play Barney anymore. We have hundreds of pictures and the memories of those good times. You were even closer to me than when you were in West Jefferson. I'm north of Mt. Airy just across the state line in Virginia. Wish I had known you were so nearby. I would have told you to go to Dobson, just out of Mt. Airy, and eat at The Depot at Cody Creek. Not only is it a beautiful place, but they also have the best ribs I have ever tasted. To get into where the restaurant is you drive through a covered bridge. There are many cute places there to see, and even cabins that can be rented. I sound like a tour guide...lol...but I love the place. We could have met for a great meal and some fellowship. I would have even treated! Did you go see Pilot Mountain? Known in the show as Mount Pilot. You can see it just off 52. Really cool looking mountain. You would have enjoyed the tour in Barney's car. It's fun and informative. The driver is so proud of his hometown and will show you many interesting things.

I visited Mount Airy some yeras ago, primarily to visi the grave of Chang and Eng Bunker, the original "Siamese Twins" in White Plains Baptist Cemetery
