Mayan Lopez - "Lopez vs. Lopez" | The Daily Show

Комедия

Mayan Lopez, co-creator, writer, and star of the NBC sitcom “Lopez vs. Lopez,” talks to Dulcé Sloan about the responsibility of being the only Latino-centered sitcom on TV right now. I went to a Santana concert out at the Concord Pavillion in Calif. Guess who the opening act was? George Lopez (!) It was unusual to have comedy and music together, it was great. George was hilarious as always. Then Santana played a fantastic set and George came out and played some percussion. Great experience. 🕉 Laughter and music 🎶 for peace on earth 🌎

I... I'm not sure about that. I can only speak for my latino community right, from my personal experience. And here's the deal so far as I can see: if you don't speak Spanish, and go to... I don't know, Mexico, Guatemala, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Salvador, Belize, etc.... you are going to be absolutely left out. If you are genetically a Latina living in the US, trying to learn about your heritage, ok. But you are not exactly part of the community as proud as you can be of your family and your roots. Put her in Mexico . She would be totally and completely out of touch of the actual Latino reality. You need to understand, if she is unable to communicate in any Latino language and doesn't live in Latin America... she is not... totally, exactly, a Latina. Even the native people who only speak native languages and no Spanish at all are extremely more connected to our Latino culture, lifestyle and overall reality. She is a totally different case. The fact that she is trying to learn the language from Duolingo and not from family and friends... the fact that she wasn't taught by anyone else before she tried a modern mobile app... tells you everything you need to know about how disconnected she is from Latin America. Are we going to argue genetics? then yeah, she clearly is a Latina and you can see it from a mile away. Absolutely undeniable. But we cannot close the case there. Stop being afraid of saying things as they are. Political correctness is a great idea until it stops you from having real conversations, afraid of what they would think. If I was her at this stage in her life? I would simply say: I'm trying to finally reconnect with my roots. That's more like it. I wouldn't call myself a Latina like if it was nothing. Like if it was just about genetics.

Haitian Creole is technically French, but it's different enough that it's a different dialect. There is no such language as Chinese; that's a nationality. However, there are dialects of Mandarin (the language spoke by most Chinese nationals) that are so different from each another that a person from one small village would be unable to understand a person from another small village even though they are both speaking Mandarin. Even when speaking Spanish a Cuban might not be easily understood by a Guatemalan and both might be difficult to understand by Spaniards from Spain. I have no idea why you're making a big deal out of this. Just ask an American and a Brit what they think these words mean: Biscuit Scone Cookie Crisp Chip The answer will be different because one person speaks traditional English and the other American English.
