UNPOPULAR OPINION………but MONICA was and still is my favorite character on the show. She was beautiful, sassy, witty and HONEST when it came to those toxic women. She challenged William to be more than the “fifth wheel” to their friendship and she truly wanted him to elevate in his career whether they were together or not and once she became one of the “girlfriends” she showed a lighter/more vulnerable side to her.

Darnell is the villain here at the end of the day. I can’t blame Maya. He was incredibly abusive in the first few seasons that’s literally what a woman in an abusive relationship does. Most people would cut Maya off after something like that which is what ends up isolating women who are married to an abuser. Everything emasculated Darnell she could barely breathe without him blowing up on her. No one ever holds him accountable

Spot on. During the original run, Maya was one of my faves because I thought she "kept it real". As I aged, I did start to notice the high and mighty attitude she had because she had a husband and the other ladies didn't. Maya, like many ladies who brag about their husbands, are only married because of circumstance (i.e., shotgun wedding).

I watch Girlfriends all the time and been watching since 2000. To Be honest… They all were horrible friends to each other. 😂

I was the same, I loved her when I was younger. Maya was funny and quick on her feet with responses. As an adult, though, I noticed she took advantage of her friends and judged them too much. I hated that episode she let Joan get cussed out by her husband because of her bad choices.

That episode where Darnell cursed Joan out at her office party still irks me to this day. I hate how Joan didn't put either of them in their place in that moment, and what's worse is she brought Darnell a damn computer afterwards because she was so desperate to remain friends with Maya after she put her in that situation. Toxic behaviour and Joan should have dropped Maya as a friend and assistant after that.

He really was. I didn't like Darnell too much in the first few seasons. I found him to be pretty controlling, not to mention very resistant to any kind of change. He just expected her to stay the same as they were in High School. I didn't like that he wouldn't allow her to go back to school. He should have realized that her furthering her education would have benefitted not just her, but the whole family. But I guess that he was afraid of her moving up and then moving on from him. I liked him in the season when they got back together. They both grew as people, and were able to come back together. But I really hate how he did Lena. She really wasn't so bad a person, even though we were supposed to hate her because she was the obstacle to Maya and Darnell. Imagine being left at the alter and humiliated in front of your friends and family like that. They should have made her more of a villain, then it would be more justified.

Heavy on the “had no business watching it”. This show is how I first heard the word “chlamydia” and my mom was livid when I asked her what that meant 😭😭😭.

Lynn sucked too. She was that type of friend who mooched off of Joan and still had something to say about her to other people like she wasn't living off of that woman. Not to mention she had no problem disrespecting her boundaries or even endangering her like that time she snuck a man (Bosco) into her house without her knowing while she was walking around topless in the safety and privacy of her house. If that dude was a real creep that could've ended badly for Joan. She was literally inviting people and animals to live at that woman's house without her permission. The only decent friend she had was William and maybe Monica to an extent due to her brutal honesty she at least told you what she was going to do before she did it without snaking you first. I have to say Monica was my favorite female character because she checked each of them effortlessly at one point in time on the show and she didn't put up with their toxic bs.

One thing about Maya tho… she was funny as hell.

Also one more thing about Maya, in the later seasons (S5 E3) when she becomes a authoress/writer and wrote her book, there was an episode with her cousin Ronnie, where she hires a white manager and gets a check advance from her book, (25k) she denies his contribution to her career and say he isn't her manager/agent after everything he did for that heifer. he asks for 10% at the end of their argument and it is revealed later on that he's been doing her hair for free every week for the last 15 years, babysitting, helped her get press for her book and supported her so much. that episode pissed me off. Maya was so ungrateful and treated him who supported her like shit. Shes offers him 10% to settle everything not even because she understood how she hurt him but to get her hair done, and he agrees to save it for jabari's college fund. Also when she did her dedication speech at her book signing, she didn't even mention him. Maya seriously just stomped over those who lifted her and supported her. but always ragged on Lynn whenever she got the chance to like calm your tits. you're living off the kindness of those around you.

Maya is always speaking like she had her life together and knew what she was doing when she didn't know a damn thing lol. She was really judgmental towards others even though she made plenty of mistakes herself

My mom was just like Maya except she was in her 20’s when she had me and my brothers. She was very judgmental, rude, envious of other women and even competed with me when I got older, a hypocritical Christian, and ghetto fabulous. My ex best friend was also like Maya as well. On the other hand, I was like Joan and unfortunately I had low self esteem, I was a people pleaser, and I was desperate for a man. I had to go to therapy after I realized I kept attracting men who used me for money and I also kept coming across “ friends “ who were only friends with me because of what I can do for them and not because they genuinely liked me. Fortunately I did meet a good guy and I decided to cut off my fake friends but I’m glad you are calling out Maya. A lot of women are fans of her because she “ keeps a real “ and don’t realize that she is a terrible friend and was the most judgmental.

Lynn was hating on Joan too during that episode.

That episode pissed me off. On top of that, the dinner was to show Sean’s prospective employer he was in a committed relationship so he could be respected and get the job. The writers really played Joan’s character. Why did she have to stay with Maya the entire time when none of the other gfs did and none of them had plans as important as hers. She should’ve been supporting her man who was committed to her and on track for a decent career. Smh they really wrote Joan like she was wrong for ever putting her best interests first. To me, Maya could have been the grounding character cause she comes off as the "keep it real" friend but they didn't. Like she was the only friend who was married and yes her journey was complex, they could have made her more of the friend that gave sound advice. I love each character but each character has some flaws that are just annoying asf. Each of them oversteps the boundaries. I never noticed that Maya was a pick-me but she was just underline jealous all the time. Watching the series older had me take a step back because they were all toxic asf. I was happy she got into becoming an Author with her "Oh Hell No" book but they could have done a lot with her character. They dropped the ball. I love your series.

That whole watch situation had me DONE with Maya. If I was Joan she would have been replaced IMMEDIATELY!

Darnell was such a damn dusty. I couldn't stand him when I was a little girl(who had no business 😂) watching Girlfriends. I actually liked Maya for most of the time growing up, but I hated how much value she placed in being picked. Like, having a man was the most important things in her life. But the man treated her like shit.

This! I’ve been said this about Maya, and she’s my least favorite girlfriend too. That one episode where Joan tried to plan Maya’s and Darnell’s wedding, and Maya had a meltdown because she was insecure. Plus she was a bad employee, and an all around bad friend too. Like, how are you going to involve your friend in your mess involving Stan? Like she was just classless. Tbh, all of Joan’s friends were trash.

Also, Maya had to tell Darnell Joan's business. Otherwise, why would he had said that she was bitter and could not get a man.

All three of them were terrible friends to Joan. Watch the Christmas episode when William tried to take Joan to Puerto Rico and they trashed her house because she didn’t get them better gifts. If those are friends no thank you.

The only person to see Maya objectively and seeing Darnell for the cornball he was. Although he did change and grow. Also really related to him discussing his control issues come from having to grow up early. I think the show did well discussing his issues and him growing. But at first, boy was a mess.

EXCELLENT VIDEO! There are women like Maya who you encounter at work who are always prying and in someone's business, gossiping with other coworkers and have the most going on. You have to avoid people like this at all cost because they're draining and although Maya had some funny moments on the show because it's a tv show people like this in real life are not pleasant to be around at all they don't even know how to have fun without gossiping about others or make everything about them but Golden is beautiful, she could've been a model.

I liked Mya, at times her character got on my nerves! She was inconsiderate and self centered at times. I especially couldn’t stand when they had her get back with her ex… I wish the writers had her move on to someone better than Darnell, he didn’t support her dreams of going back to school and he was toxic af… Gross 🙄

Then years later the actress Golden Brooks was on a reality show called Hollywood Divas, and she was such a mean girl. She was awful to Countess Vaughn who is in my opinion more legendary than her. She was cruel and sharp with everyone. Now that Im grown I realize she didn't have to go too far to draw inspiration for the character Maya.

Not the "Faded Pictures" song lmaooooooo I am in tears 😂the shadeeee 😂😂😂😂 I would've liked if Maya had moved on to better because Darnell was not it although I wasn't a Maya fan I think she deserved better than that manchild.

I remember getting furious watching that whole saga. Even back then as a young 20 something I recall me and my bestie making fun of Darnell's dusty ass. We'd already encountered losers like that who couldn't compete in the world with other men AND women and his low self esteem always had him lashing out. I would have told him if I want a man I can BUY one. Can you say the same? 😂

Omg yes it never sat right with me the way Darnell talked to Joan over Mya cheating ass. Darnell talked to Joan like shd was a man he wanted to fight. Joan better than me because I would’ve fired Mya and cussed Darnell out.

I would have beat Maya and Darnell's ass bc how dare he talk to Joan like that? He was broke and mad he was broke and made it everyone's problem. I agree, Maya should have been fired and put out of the friend group immediately. Sidenote: Joan having boundary problems was the crux of the show. Joan had her issues but I'll say 60% of it was because people were walking over her like a cheap rug and Joan had to deal with the aftermath

I like the Girlfriends show but the girls in this group aren't good friends. Lynn is a moocher. Toni is beyond selfish. Maya took advantage of Joan to get out of actually working and facing the consequences of her infidelity. And Joan actually wasnt the worst friend but she was an enabler and became jealous when she saw her friends happy in successful relationships. It's not a healthy friend group in the slightest.

And it’s funny, because I feel like Tony’s character gets better as the seasons go on am I is character gets worse. In the first season she was there for Joan, and had her back and was a pretty decent person, but as time went on, if she was always rude to people, and started bad mouthing Joan when she started working for William. Of course, it was annoying how she always do in their face that she was married but other than that she was OK.

Yesssss!!!! she was definitely one of those weird "boy moms", these are the men you have to stay clear of when they're older because their mothers are too involved in their life and always believe their son could do no wrong and if their son is a good man it makes them so jealous because they didn't have that🙄 they basically want their sons in a weird way to be the husband they never had. Maya was unbearable I can't even watch the show because her character annoys me so much. There's a certain group of women who like Maya that I stare clear of 😴

Speak the truth!!! so many people struggle with setting boundaries with people and if it’s not taught to you as a child then some people don’t know how to navigate when it comes to boundaries. The fact that Darnell called Joan a b to Maya when talking about Joan and she didn’t check him was out of order she was definitely a pick me and his temper was scary I’m sorry idc what anyone says 🤷🏽‍♀️ because like you said it’s those little red flags that some women ignore and then it goes further especially with him secluding her from her friends because he thought Joan bought her a watch 😕

Maya really did what was displayed and romanticized to her growing up, trying to be this ride or die-I know how to keep my man- woman, and I think it’s important that we saw how it unraveled for her by her own hand. She wanted to try something other than what she was taught was the ultimate goal for a moment.

Whew! I couldn’t stand Maya when the series started and I can’t stand her still. She’s always been a pick-me who used any chance she had to disrespect and belittle everyone of her friends but yet when she was down and out, they supported her just for her to get back on her feet and talk down to them again. That episode with the watch got under my skin cuz how would Darnell know Joan could get a man? Pillow talk from Maya? I HATE women who tell their man their friends personal business.

That episode when jabari was hurt and ran away from home is the one when maya got on my nerves the most because jabari was obviously angry and upset and she got mad at his attitude and grounded him and it took for the boy to run away for her to get it when all she had to do was ask him what's wrong and be more concerned about him being okay instead punishing him

Good vid! I respectfully disagree with a few things. Maya stayed with darnell because he was all she knew. They were each others first so it was easy for her to stay. Her emotional affair with stan was because darnell's insecurities couldnt accept her changing so he boxed her in & didnt let her voice any opinions. Basically, maya was naive but was growing & learning throughout the show.

Even as a kid i saw darnell as a broken loser that kept holding maya back.

I liked her drive to improve her life and became an author.

Who needs enemies when you have friends like this? SMH

Can you do one on Monica? I think for a side character that became a main (the unofficial 6th girlfriend.) she was a decent character with character growth. She wasn't perfect (putting up with Williams disrespect and neglect. She should've never gotten back together with him imo), but I think she was like a better, more mature mix of Toni and Joan and her reads were epic!
