It's sad that even now people will sympathize with Darnell. He literally stalked, gaslighted, and manipulated Brandi into falling love with him just so he could sleep with her to win a bet and brag about it to his friends. Unfortunately, it's no surprise people will sympathize with Darnell because there are many men like him. They'll sleep with a woman they deem a challenge and once they've 'conquered' said challenge, it boosts their already fragile ego. It's no wonder men like that have so much audacity. Thanks for this character breakdown!

@@leiiib it’s such a disgusting and twisted way to behave and it’s way too normalized. The movie makes Brandi the villain while playing it as boys will be boys until they get with the girl they really want that is gonna make a positive impact and change his shitty ways, as if Brandi wasn’t all of that but for some reason he didn’t take her seriously and the worst part to me is that Brandi TOLD him she couldn’t handle being played with and he proceeded to play with her, literally gave no f*ck about her but pretended for so long and went so hard as if he did. Came in her life just to mess with her head and make her relive past traumas she confided in him about. I’d have been ready to f*ck his ish up too! That’s so DIRTY and it makes it *extremely* scary to date men, like you said because this is REAL behavior that men exhibit way too often

I also agree with people speaking negatively about their ex's especially the people who are on social media 24/7 constantly throwing subs or speaking badly about their ex, that's a major red flag to me and a sign of immaturity and also shows that you're not really over your ex 🤷🏾‍♀

I loved Regina King’s role cause she was so feminine, never chased Darnell and didn’t have to do anything to make Darnell fall for her. I truly believe some people shouldn't be in relationships and find people who are the same way as you said, because they just don't have the ability or maturity to be in a relationship. If the movie was longer or there was a part 2 i'd guarantee Darnell would be out there creeping again while with Mia. Brandi was not the one and he found that out expeditiously.

I remember they sometimes aired reruns on VH1 and BET and never gave it much thought. I watched it a couple of years ago and it is one of the wildest movies I’ve watched. I wasn't fooled by the trailer because the trailer made it look like a straight dark comedy, which it was to some extent. From the multiple times I watched it, I felt bad for Brandi even though what she did wasn't right. I somewhat felt bad for Mia because she loved Darnell, but at the same time, she knew the kind of person Darnell was. Darnell was awful and so was his friend, Bobby Brown’s character(I forgot his name). I know Bobby was already a playboy in real life by the time this movie came out, it fit him like a glove. Overall, what I got from the movie is to never mess with people’s emotions because you never know what people are capable of.

YES YES! This film came out when I was a young teen. I remember going to see this with my cousins, all my age but some were boys. I recall riding in my aunts car on the way back from the movies and the boys were all up in arms saying how “crazy” Brandi was in the movie and she was wrong for doing what she did to Darnell (Martin’s character)….My aunt Jeannie (who didn’t even see the movie) cut through ALL of that foolery in this car ride home. Auntie said, “well it sounds like he, Darnell, got what he deserved and should not have deceived her. You can’t play with people’s feelings and think they won’t react.” The car went into dead silence. But in my mind I was saying “YES AUNTIE YOU ARE 100% RIGHT.” It changed me forever. To this day I thank my aunts and the intelligent women in my family for giving me the correct info at a young age which made me such a smart well rounded woman today. ❤

Rewatching this movie as an adult i’ve come to the realization that Darnell was the antagonist. Not only did Brandi warn him but his mom & Smitty warned him as well. Darnell was labeled as the victim because Martin Lawrence was the biggest comedian at the time this movie came out. Smitty & Reggie were the only mature men in this movie. Can we please get deep dives on the following characters: Celie, Sophia & Shug from The Color Purple Lisa from Coming To America Natalie from Strictly Business Selina from New Jack City Natalie from Strictly Business Jacqueline & Angela from Boomerang Nia from Love Jones Diamond, Ronnie & Eboni from The Players Club Robin, Jordan, Shelby & Mia from The Best Man Roz, Mozell, Cecily & Eve from Eve’s Bayou
