This conversation between George Plimpton and Maya Angelou, part of a collaboration between 92Y’s Unterberg Poetry Center and The Paris Review, was recorded live at 92Y on January 11, 1988. We are able to share this recording thanks to a generous gift in memory of Christopher Lightfoot Walker, longtime friend of the Poetry Center and The Paris Review. Here is an excerpt from the full interview that ran in The Paris Review as The Art of Fiction No. 119 in the fall of 1990. Read more:

She was a wonderful woman and a angel posing as a human being.
It’s 3 am in the morning and I cannot get to sleep. I decide to listen to her wonderful stories which reminds that I’m somebody’s rainbow. Wrapped in this dark brown skin and matted hair (not coily nor curly) but soft like lamb’s wool. I don’t have to speak because she says everything for me to me. I suppose she’s doing what her grandmother did for her when she became mute (a comforter). What can I say, she and I share the same birthday and the same nickname “Sista.” So grateful that we had her for awhile. P.S. I like how she use the rainbow to edify her message.

I agree ...you should write
18:05 - 18:53 Maya Angelou dilates on the difference between "growing up" and "getting older." To grow up means you take responsibility for the time you take up and the space you occupy.

Word is bond, Jimmy! 👍💯
Love you Gogs.
I always kind of wondered -- wondered why Oprah looked up to her the way she did. Now I understand.
