I highly doubt you'd see a store advertising the fact that they refuse credit cards now.

I don't think any store exists that doesn't accept credit cards. Back in 1982 credit cards, while not new, weren't widely regarded as preferable to a check or cash. They were seen as a tool for profligates - you only had a credit card if you had a lot of money, or weren't very good with money and bought things on credit because you never had enough cash. Then the 1980s exploded and suddenly everybody wanted to get a credit card to LOOK rich, like the people on Dynasty. Stores practically threw credit accounts at people, and you just weren't anybody if you didn't have a wallet full of cards. I don't remember anybody caring about credit scores. Folks just racked up the debt to buy the latest clothes, stereos, and gimmicks. The result? A LOT of defaulting and bankruptcies when the recession of 1988 hit. Still credit cards hung around, and since the pandemic hit a lot of stores went credit/debit card only - money was thought to carry the virus. Now? Cedar Point announced that this year they're going totally cashless. You have to convert your money to a Visa debit card at the front of the park. And in just about any store you go to, if you're paying cash you'll get a funny look. And paying by check? Hardly anybody does that anymore. We're moving to a cashless society.

@@SarahB1863 There's a grocery store in my city that still doesn't take credit cards, and it's a chain store, too. Also, I recently went to an NHL game in Calgary and they've gone completely cashless for their concessions. They didn't even give out paper receipts... They asked for your email or cell number if you wanted one sent to you.

@@SarahB1863 While going cashless does avoid the time & money needed to count, sort, and take cash to & from the bank, it has the unspoken side effect of keeping very poor people out of your store.
