May 17, 1961 - John F. Kennedy's Address Before the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa, Canada

President John F. Kennedy spoke in the House of Commons chamber. ''I am grateful for the generous remarks and kind sentiments toward my country and myself, Mr. Prime Minister. We in the United States have an impression that this country is made up of descendants of the English and the French. But I was glad to hear some applause coming from the very back benches when you mentioned Ireland. I am sure they are making progress forward.''

If our leaders could still speak so eloquently, this country wouldn't be in shambles.

@@lincolnthomas2418 , you know, he really wasn't (our 44th President). Everyone keeps saying that, but he really wasn't. He was flat, forced, and, worst of all........parochially *boring.* You are right about the corruption with him. He was nothing like our 35th President (above).

Fun fact about this Speech and Presidential Visit: the part where he talked about the OAS, urging Canada to join it frustrated Diefenbaker because he had already told Kennedy he wouldn’t join it (we didn’t join until 1989). The part also where he mentions having Nuclear weapons in all areas of NATO would come to be a foreshadowing of a very tense moment in Canada-US relations. Later Diefenbaker had Kennedy plant a tree on parliament hill, an innocent enough gesture. But Kennedy threw his back out and because his back trouble was still a secret at the time Kennedy was angry about potential exposure. This permanently soured the relationship between Kennedy and Diefenbaker for the rest of their time in power. There is evidence that Kennedy even interfered in the 1962 & 63 elections in favour of Pearson. I think Diefenbaker forgave him in the end. He was going to send Kennedy a painting of the naval Battle of the Chesapeake and the Shannon just before Kennedy was killed. There’s a lot underneath those nice sounding words.

I see what you're saying here. But honestly I doubt..well I know JFK wasn't petty as such, to try to interfere with elections over his back being "thrown out" as it was always painful for him. Kennedy was against NATO so..I'll have to rewatch the comments about nuclear weapons... The painting was a very lovely gesture, if only it had a chance to have happened. ✌🏼
