I’ve did three XC races earlier this year with the rekon race 2.25, and this is a great tire for its intended purpose: smooth hardpacked ONLY. I made a mistake riding these in slightly muddy, and loose rooty conditions and crashed pretty bad and ended up in the ER. This is indeed a race specific tire.

Last month I purchased a new Trek which came with the standard Ardent tires. I do a lot of street and gravel roads. Two days my Rekon Race came in and I had them installed. When Maxxis notes on their web site that these are a a fast rolling tire - their not kidding.

I buy to Rekon Race after view this your video, the best tires… I’m using front and rear 2,35 mm TR… Now I’m buying Rekon tire I’m back here more impressions… Nice video!!!

Perfect timing! I was just thinking of my next tires after im thru with my schwalbes. I might give these a try next season or as soon as the covid bug clears out and its safe to go out again.

I’m with Vittoria, but i have 2 Rekon Race that came with the bike, I’ll give them a try as a rear tyre this summer.

@@LoveMTB I've spent two pairs of 2.25s. The last pair survived a bit over 5400 km, I've left them on the bike until rear one got almost slick :) They do corner much better than Ikon which frightened me a lot of times. We have a lot of thorny plants here in Croatia, so I've found it's "heaviness" as a bonus. The casing is thick enough to seal holes very fast. Thunder Burt is much faster, but it's thin as paper and often impossible to seal the puncture by itself on my kind of trails.

Great tyre, easy to instal and holds pressure very well. Good rolling on hard tarmack and sticky in the corners. Just not as wide as i thought. It says 2.35, but it the same width like rocket ron 2.25 (57mm. on. 25mm rim) i thought it would be wider.

This looks more like an ikon2 like a variant. Looks like another good choice between ikon and racing Ralph

I've just put a rekon 3c 2.4 wt on the same rims with a 2.35 ikon on the back. Much prefer it to the ardent race i had on previously.

i have 2 recon race 29-2.40 tires on my bike and love them

I had a 2.25 reckon race front and back and I ripped the bead in half on both of them while riding. I have never had this problem on other maxxis tires or any other brand.

I had only ridden and raced them for about two months. My local trails are pretty dusty and loose.

Love maxxis for the durability, not so much for weight. Even Schwalbe are getting a bit heavier. Really love the rekon race 2.35 rear on hardtails. Did some KOM prs on my local trails. Just enough more grip & compliance to best the Thunderburts. Do they make a wide rocket Ron? I need to try one if they make something bigger than the 2.25 ROcket up front. Anyone who’s tried racing ray and Ron up front at equal sizing I’m interested to hear reports. Thanks all and keep riding!

Ardent race f&r or rekon race f&r?

This Rekon Race 2.35 do you approve of this tire? I'm thinking of buying them where I live all mixed, trails, wet and dry, do I get this rekon race, ikon or ardent race? I want a 2.35 tire because I'm riding a boost bike...

I do not know of a more fragile or light Maxxis tire than EXO carcass. Am I wrong? Is it not most fragile to toughest: EXO, EXO+, DD, DH?

Awesome video, as always! I noticed you are still running the arch mk3 rims, for I believe more than 2 years now. How well have those held up in your experience? I just bought a brand new bike, an Orbea Occam H30 2020 (140mm FS), and the wheels it comes with are REALLY heavy (660g per 25mm rim, according to the manufacturer), and would like to make a new set of wheels with so-so hubs, cheap DT spokes and a lightweight aluminum rim. I come from an Orbea Alma H30 (xc hardtail with 100m travel), which I felt was holding me back a bit on technical terrain. I've never done jumps nor drops bigger than maybe 2ft, but I wish to progress my skills slowly into doing gnarlier stuff. Currently I'm in between the Stans Arch MK3 (26MM) and the DT Swiss XM421 (25mm). Which one would you recommend me? PD: My bike came with High Rollers II 29x2.5WT front and Rekon 29x2.4WT in the rear, but I plan to change those for lighter, less aggressive tyres once those finish their lifespan (maybe 2.3s ~ 2.4s).

@@LoveMTB maybe a DHR II in the front and rekon in the back, but that's not set on stone. This is the first time I've ever used tyres bigger than 2.2, so time will tell if I like them with sort of lightweight wheels (I've only ridden the bike 72km). As getting a complete wheel set goes, that would be difficult for me, as I live in the Dominican Republic and the taxes are pretty high for any shipment coming in over 200usd. My plan is to buy the rims (100usd each), DT Competition spokes (30ish per wheel), and some cheap "precision" hubs for around 115 bucks F&R from my LBS. The total for the set would be around 375usd, without the maybe 20 bucks my mechanic would charge me for setting it all up. Do you have any suggestions?

@@LoveMTB I thought the only so-so parts were the hubs, as I would be using a "good" rim (Stans Arch MK3) and "good" spokes (DT SWISS Competition). The hubs I'm planning to use have 4 pawls on the free hub, but I dont know exactly how many POE it has. How important are the hubs when building a wheel set? I've never done it, and honestly thought it would be good enough for me, as I've never had a "good" set of hubs, and all I want to do is shave some weight (around 200g per rim alone). What other options would I have for around the same price? Are there any complete wheel sets close to that budged that could be better? I honestly couldn't find any "good" rear wheel for 200usd or less. What would you consider a "good" but "cheap" pair of hubs? I had the Bitex 211 hubs in mind

@@LoveMTB followed your advice and spent a bit more on a wheelset. Ended up grabbing one with DT XM 481 rims with DT 350 Hubs, laced with straight pull DT Comp Race spokes, so around 1810g for the set with 30mm inner width for 600 USD shipped.

@@LoveMTB Hi man. Would you have a suggestion for light rims for me (either carbon or alloy as long as they are light)? I`m riding a Orbea Occam with RaceFace AR30 29" rims now and i want to get some light XC rims (25mm) for the Occam. I`m 75 kg, will not jump and drops, only xc trails. Will propably put Rekon Race 29x2.25 on them. It will be perfect to change rims on the type of riding i want.

I have a hardtail and most of my riding is on pavement and occasionally I go into the dirt, I'd say 70/30. What combination could you recommend for this type of use? I would like to have good grip on the front wheel and fast rolling on the rear wheel, but not wear out as fast. I was thinking about the combination of Vittoria Barzo/Mezcal but I haven't decided yet.

I´ve had Recon Race 2.35 both front and rear, good on tarmac and hard soil, not so good on the rest. Now i have Recon 2.4wt front and rear and much happier, better grip on medium and loose soil as well as good rolling resistance on tarmac and hard soil, not going back to Recon Race!

Some rekon race tires have the yellow maxxis logo and some have the white. Is there a difference between them?

Me he aficionado a la bici, cono tanta gente, con la pandemia. Hago salidas mixtas, combinando asfalto, pista y algún sendero de montaña no demasiado complicado, de 30, 40 ó 50 km. Las semanas que puedo son 2 veces. Me gusta más subir que bajar porque bajar me acojona un poco, la verdad, y no lo disfruto tanto como otra gente. Llevo desde hace 4 meses una Orbea Alma M50 (la entrada al carbono de Orbea) y las ruedas que trae montadas son las Maxxis Ikon 2.20" FB 60 TPI Dual. No les he hecho ni 1.000 km pero llevo tiempo barajando cambiarlas y pasarme al tubeless. Este fin de semana pinché y hoy mismo me he caído en un descenso un poco técnico pero nada del otro mundo y estas 2 circunstancias han sido la gota para decidirme a tubelizar. Posiblemente lo haré la semana que viene. Estoy barajando ponerme unas maxiss rekon 29x2,25 delante y unas maxiss rekon race 29x2,25 detrás. Después del prólogo, mis duda son: - lo veis buena combinación para mí? - Sería mejor poner detrás cubiertas de 2,20? Leo a mucha gente que dice que la combi 2,25 delante con 2,20 detrás va muy bien. - En ese caso, existe le maxxis rekon race 29x2,20? Mejor ésa o mejor alguna otra recomendación según mi perfil de ciclista? - En base a mi peso, creeis que puede derraparme la trasera en subidas un poco técnicas de cierta pendiente ya algo seria que suba del 10 ó 12%? a puncture may slow you down more with a lighter tyre! interested to see how it performs though

I am considering going to 2.35 rekon race instead of 2.25. more comfy ride and more grip cant hurt. However I am slightly worried about my rim width. DT Swiss 25mm rims, should 2.35 be ok with that? I know it technically can work, but will it be optimal? Thanks!!

@@Angel-rg9dh I got hardtail myself (Scott Scale, XC bike) and I'm at 95 kg, so kinda similar. I did want to try 2.35 however my frame cleaeance suggests 2.3 max, and while I've seen 2.35 and even 2.4 snuggly fit, I would prefer some headroom for tire wobble/deformation and also some clearance for mud. So I ended up going 2.25, and if anything my 25mm rims love 2.25 more than 2.35, so in the end, it wasnt that hard decision for me. Also slight downside is that 2.35 are a bit heavier (20-50 grams per tire depending on the model), not that big of a deal, but lighter the better. But if you have plenty of clearance for the tire on your frame, and ride a bit rougher trails and dont mind slightly more weight, I'd personally go for 2.35. 👌

can I fit those tires on my 30mm rim?

I had them on new bike but they are SLOW for XC, Schwalbe racing ray+ralph combo is much faster with same grip on dry, but vittoria mezcal 2.3 also faster AND grippier on both wet and dry. Poor rubber of Maxxis as always for XC, I had Maxxis Pace and it was beaten by vittoria as well.

I have the same on the back of my hardtail, I was so disappointed cuz I bought it mainly because I want to have slick fast rolling tire. But I was surprised how huge drag this tire have in compare to shitty stock WTB Trail Boss which came on that bike... It was even more strange to me as I use similar tire on the back before, Rock Razor from schwalbe. I was expecting similar performance as this one is dual compound (so it should be pretty fast rolling). Im really angry now cuz I have to take them off the bike... XC bike should be live and fast but Rekon race ruined my ride completely... You know whats funny, on other bike I have full blown enduro tire, Minion DHR 3C Maxx terra 2.4, heavy and soft tire but still rolls much faster than dual Recon Race WTF?????

I would use the recon race as a front tire, and in the rear an Ikon.

Switch from Continental Raceking 2.0 to Rekon Race 2.35 feel much slower and heavier
