Cowabunga mate.! Getting some great ideas from this segment. Thanks for taking us down memory lane and coming back doing regular vids. It's your fault that we make our own knives.! For a minute there we thought you were talking to a Big Foot. Hmm...must be a Black Foot..!! hee.! Here's something for you mate. We once start a fire by stabbing our Lithium mobile phone (Cell phone in USA) due to its exposure to the atmosphere it ignites. Talk about blowing up..!! Cheers cobber from Australia.

I like the idea of the forceps. The number of times I've tried to get all bushcrafty, gotten different sized kindling, built it into a neat little pile, tried to scrape a fire steel and then knocked the whole kit and caboodle over and then realised my tinder has gone out...

The most resilient fire starting material is cotton balls infused with Vaseline. Works when wet, a quarter or less will still burn for a couple of minutes. And of a ferro rod of course! Anything else you will need char material. Maybe a magnifying glass. Flint and steel can be used with gathered wild materials and not dependent on char material. And if you feel really inspired, try a fire plow or a bamboo friction fire.

Live fire is great I have some in my fire kits. I also carry tender quicks, spartan fire strips and guitar picks in my wallet. Used to carry a lollipop wrapper the ones that have a waxy coating on them I think they were like the tootsie pop ones that had the wax coating.

Have you ever had a ferro rod start to flake? I have a few ferro rods not all but some of them starting flaking in my kit and left dust residue. Is that because of the type of ferro rod or the type of coating?

Ferrocerium degrades over time if you do not protect it from water, oxygen, salt, acids, bases etc. etc. I don't care what any bush crafter or YT presenter tells you its still a hunk of iron oxide with rare earth metals and magnesium compressed into a shape. Zippo flints are nothing but tiny Ferrocerium rods. They break down, clog or concrete up inside the flint tube and then you gotta deal with it. Happens all the time. So protect your big ferros, cause they cost more than a Zippo flint. Renwax, fingernail polish, but do NOT use CLPs . They will penetrate the Ferro over time and make it uuseable
