On the west coast, the best road trips are either taking PCH to Carmel, or taking 395 along the eastern Sierras to Mammoth or Yosemite

Is the Pacific Coast Highway also known as route 101? I know there is a song by herb Alpert called route 101. 😎🚗🚗🚗🚗

@@DugrozReports It is! Portions of the PCH, Pacific Coast Highway, and the 101 merge together. At other points, the two highways split. The PCH hugs the California coast so it is a slow and winding drive, but has specatcular views. If not dirving, the yearly Big Sur marathon is a great way to enjoy the views as well. I think there are Choice options near Big Sur if you do a rip trip. Fun note: Californians, as accurately protrayed in the SNL skit, refer to highways as "the 405" or "the 101" instead of " Interstate 405" or " I 405"

I would recommend for you to stay in Germantown TN or Collierville TN, it’s literally near Memphis. It’s more safer.

@@DugrozReports yes. It’s getting more crazier lately. One St Jude research doctor died- he was shot while protecting his family. They were strolling around Beale Street at night. Several employees from St Jude and Methodist North were victims of having their car tires stolen- all four of them after their shift and their cars were sitting on cinder blocks. Their cars was parked at the employees parking garage. Memphis is ok to stroll around during daytime- but you still have to be safe. Germantown and Collierville are the safest places to stay and it’s still on your path to your destination anyways.

On special occasions those choice points can be way over 5 cpp. I recently searched for quality inn in Buffalo NY on solar eclipse day for 12k points, cash price was over $600.

You need to tweak title and the intro to the story of this road trip - be intentional - sign up for cards with a plan or purpose. I think there's a clickable hook there. But it resolves around don't just get cards to get cards. Get cards with a purpose. My problem with Amex right now - I don't have a plan or a vision on how to use the points. I'm close to saying my best friend of 30 years and I will go to Disney parks in Hong Kong and Shanghai with the 340k MR points. I didn't get the Hilton Supass with a target offer - no pop up jail - simply cause I didn't have a plan for the points. Right now I'm gardening / planning for a DCL cruise or two.

This is a good year 1 consideration for a road tripper. The cards themselves do ok post year 1, but largely are average when comparing to a cashback setup. Also with the cashback setup you are not beholden to Choice or any one network, if someone is cool eating that Citi Premier AF, I think the Citi Tri/Quad fecta would be OP. Transfer to Choice when opportune, Wyndham for Vacasa or other relevant properties or hell go cashback and pick where and when you want to stop without regard for either program.

So just for the sake of discussion… Would it be a worthy sock drawer card? I wouldn’t put much spend on it beyond year one, but for a single $95 annual fee, you get 30,000 points every year, which was enough to book any of the hotels in my example. Your thoughts? Good discussion! Thanks, AP!

@@DugrozReports oh for sure. I totally intend to do that and use it as my de facto hardware store card. The value as an earner overall beyond year 1 is not particularly good. The theme of your video is the road-trip card for the average American and the average American probably isn’t looking to flip a SUB with a friend for every road-trip (we both totally would for sure) which is why the Citi combo I noted would tick both boxes get a SUB worth 120K Choice points and continue earning at a high clip after year one.

@@AP_808 Maybe I can convince a FEW average Americans to get a card just to milk the SUB for all it's worth!!!! :)

In the example where the spent amount is $2093. I know the goal is to use points but what if you signed up for the choice select mastercard and paid for the whole trip with the card to achieve the sign up bonus.. So 2093 * 22. Another 46k points. Sometimes I wonder when it comes to hotels cards and doing the signup bonus it would be cool to achieve the bonus with spend at actually properties so your really maximizing the sign up bonus overall. Then you use your points going forward.

I think it depends on the assets you have, what your plan is, etc. If you had a little over $2000, set aside anyway, specifically for taking a trip, that would totally makes sense! But my goal is always to make things free, or as close to free as possible. So I come at it with the attitude of spending on things I would have to buy anyway, and then using the points generated by that natural spend to get me the travel. But I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer here. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it! 😎🚗

I love this kind of stuff. I like your “vetting” of Choice Hotels, too. There really is some insane value if you play your cards (pun intended) right! If both people opened Citi cards then they would have 240k points at their disposal, and able to make the trip longer!
