Hot wax immersion for me. The drivetrain longevity I’m getting is amazing. 11,000 km on my chain and still going strong. And who cares about watt savings, the bling look of that gold kolossoss is justification in itself. 😍

Hot wax for the win! Easy to do, easy to maintain, clean, protects components well. For longer rides (>400km) I carry squirt wax, sets up quickly.

Great video. I use WD40 to clean my components, it really gets right into the nitty gritty of the parts. There are people who say don’t use it but others say it’s ok. WD40 has been around than a lot of the brands they recommend. I find it works really well. The derailleur is interesting, I’ve not seen one like that before. WD40 is a very low viscosity oil. It's called Water Displacement 40, because it will displace even water, making sure steel components don't rust. This also means that it will displace any lubricant in your chain. So after just a single application of WD40, your chain is ruined, because any lubricant you put onto your chain, will not be able to displace the WD40 and only stick to surfaces that don't need lubrication. So from then on, WD40 and only WD40 acts as the lubricant of your chain. But WD40 is a bad lubricant. It will spray off the chain and it lubricates your chain only for a very short amount of time, requiring you to do applications of WD40 before every ride.

Once you finish your mineral spirits you should try either Ceramic Speeds UFO Drivetrain cleaner or Silca's Chain Stripper on your next new chain. Much easier, you still get multiple chains per bottle, and the solutions themselves are more environmentally friendly!

I've not tried it myself yet, but that Silca chain stripper looks like it would take a lot of the hassle factor out of that initial wax set-up.

Wax my chain too, run two chains changing them each week as I do 450km per week. Need to make some wax to put on before end of week. Waxing has made my chains last much longer!

I use petrol to clean my chain - and some elbow grease -and then either hot paraffin wax or Muc-Off Wet Lube, winter & summer. It depends on how much I can be bothered

1. upgrade wheels 2. upgrade tyres 3. upgrade for oval cranks the last thing is upgrading the oversized derailleur. 1% improvement, at what amounts to a PROFESSIONAL cyclist’s average wattage of 250 watts. Saving is 2,4 watts. So for endurance cycling it's almost nothing. Like if you are not using fully aero bags, clothing helmet etc. wich you gain a much bigger advantage than an oversized derailleur. compared clean and well lubricated chain you save 5-10 watts.. I'm not saying it's looking cool ;), but for 500€ you can make much better improvements.

All things being equal, 1% savings just by changing a cage is no small feat, especially if you are an ultra racer. But even if you weren't, it looks great on your bike.

Either you suddenly got very beefy fingers, or it’s not actually you doing the pulley wheel installation :-)

Replacing oil with wax is certainly a no-brainer if listening to experts and testing instead of random rants in the comments! In the wet I use Squirt to top off. One thing worth mentioning, step ZERO, before cleaning the chain - pick anything but SRAM! Several independent tests (Ceramicspeed, Silca, Marginal Gains, Zero Friction Cycling, etc.) have shown their chains to be the worst pick in efficiency. (I reacall they might last a longer.) KMC is ok but Shimano makes the most efficient and with wax I get over 5k on my chains, on average two per year and rotate them.

km or miles? I am looking at SRAM chain as heard it last longer, rest going for efficiency, Enduro XD 15 bearings and ceramic speed OSPW aero

​@@mlee6050 miles. For sure SRAM is apparently valid choice for those looking to stretch budgets. I like SRAM (and Zipp.) But these are marginal gains after all. Together they add up. I still have SRAM groupset (mechanical) on my CAAD10 trainer setup!

@@obikedog you experienced DMC? I just looked and like KMC but see they got DMC that apparently last 3 times a normal chain, X12 and X12 EPT Unsure about stretch budget when looking to have Emonda ALR as daily commute bike and realise cassette is like £300 for 12 speed ...

​@@mlee6050 Thanks, I've not heard of them. True the chain is the least expensive bit to replace so good to do some research. Especially with all the engineering Shimano does for their little-noticed but critical shifting ledges and notches.
