Maxim Vengerov plays Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1 (2019)

Музыка

I am excited to share the release of this new performance, filmed on 3 September 2019 at the season opening of the Novosibirsk State Philharmonic Orchestra with great Shostakovich specialist and conductor Thomas Sanderling at Arnold Kats State Concert Hall. Maestro Sanderling is principal conductor and artistic director of the orchestra.
The music of Shostakovich is like a black and white historical documentary about the Second World War. This was approximately when both this piece and his 10th symphony were written. This work was not performed for many years and kept hidden by the composer for fear of releasing it because it speaks the truth against the Stalinist regime.
Shostakovich's works shows us a different perspective on music; it’s not absolute music like Mozart or Beethoven, but Shostakovich is like a reincarnation of Beethoven because he speaks the message of truth, brotherhood, love, passion, suffering, hope and humour and so on...

As my own country is slipping inexorably into absolute dictatorship I’m finding a lot of solace in Shostakovich’s work and maestro Vengerov’s interpretation. Trying to understand Shostakovich’s language to feel his desperation, anger as well as his courage and determination to defend what we hold dear against tyranny.

This concert was written right after take down of Shostakovich by Zhdanov in 1948 . Both his and Prokofiev's music was claimed to be pessimistic, formalistic and unfit the spirit of Soviet people. The final movement is kinda la danse macabre , that makes you run away from all the absurd you had to get through.

I am 100% with you (assuming you are not talking about Russia which I love) but not the Soviet Russia , lived in communist system 25 years, came to this country (US) for freedom and now it's under dictatorship worse than what I experience before. Lets hope soon freedom will return before it's too late. I love Shostakovich and know all about his fight against tyranny with his music and his fear, long live FREEDOM

I'm not in a dictatorship, but I find this music more universal than the circumstances in which it was written. Shostakovich is the composer who best satisfies me today, independently of the country I live in.

@@pierfrancescopeperoni yeah I’ve always liked Shostakovich’s music as it is but when experiencing repression first-hand Shostakovich was one of the things that kept me sane those couple of weeks. I found myself listening to this on loop. I guess misery likes company so maybe that’s why this piece consoled me in a weird way.

Dear Maxim Alexandrovich! 10 years ago when I listen this concert in Avery Fisher Hall in New York, right during perfomanse I wrote a poem (during second part) and on my back way home in bus and train I finished it. I have a book with my poem dedecated to Dmitriy Dmitrievich Shostokovich with poem called "Legends of the Immortals' Weapons" where I write about Leningrad Symphony story: how it was composed and performd include Arturo Toskaninin performing in New York and perform August 9, 1942 in Leningrad. I work on this poem since 2009 to 2014 and dreaming to translate in English but my English level was not high for such works. Since 2023 I started do do this with ChatGPT and translate Poeme and some short poemse like I mention now. Yesterday when I finished translate Poem writting during performing of this Concerto I decided to Listen It again and Find Your Performance. When I finished Listen it - I finished second poem inspire by The same concerto (but inspierd by third movement). Thank You very much. I let myself share new poem in translation to English. Sincerelly Mikhail. ON THE MORNING FOLLOWING THE DELUGE Cadenza Attacca After the flood, ground's slowly drying, and birds on the branches. Watch as the water recedes, awaiting the dawn to appear. Some and the others alive now, trading their doubts for new chances. Grasses and feathers and leaves greet new wind over fear Some people cry, somewho ask, "For what reason?" repeating, Something has closed and something has opened, piercing the Air. Waves do their final gallop. Someone diving us greeting, Terrifying, yet, I feel eyes from the darkness. Who care? Dance is not dance, and tears are not tears, and scream is not proper, Fear has receded and we know: reasons roll over with science. Choices await for us now: will it be quagmire or poplar? Birds are descending from last one on tablecloth in silence. No final chance, and though never been first one chance here Violinist steps from the dark, look around, chin raising with oath. Straightening tuxedo, and tuning his violin. Prophesy. Hear. Death or the life? Sun-ray touched very gently the bottoms of boats.   Mikhail Mazel

I find it so magical that he rarely ever opens his eyes. He’s fully immersed into the music feeling every bit of it. Pretty much unconscious with just his mind driving every single movement in regards to the music. He doesn’t need to see what he’s doing, he just plays so organically and perfectly that he knows the music will be as pristine and meaningful as it can be if he just plays it without the brain making decisions, he’s just playing the music as the music is.
