Maxim drop-in Roller Delay "RDB" for 9mm AR - My observations, slowmo and shooting. (re-upload)

Re-upload due to incorrect measurements - corrected.
The Maxim RDB system is a roller delayed drop-in system for the 9mm AR. I took one out to the range today. These are my impressions and observations. Includes 1000FPS slowmo with a skeletonized buffer tube and shooting comparison to the Gentle Recoil System. 115gr. Federal ammo.

    I contacted Maxim and they confirmed that 30lbs to charge the rifle is normal. They said it takes that much to overcome the resistance of their roller delay system. Well, at least you knnow it's doing something.

    When mine arrived it had only a light coat of oil, and it was very difficult to charge. I just took it apart and using a toothpick, i added some high quality grease to the rollers and the slot they interact with. Oil on everything else. Ran the action several times and now the force required is dramatically less. The difference is quite noticable, although I've not fired it yet to compare.

    Mine came greased. Watch for preload on the rollers - preloading by the bolt pushing it back slightly in the tube with the upper closed makes it much easier to charge, but makes the mechanism less effective at delaying the action.

    I bought it! I like it! Im strong like bull, LOL 😂 😂 . I recomened it. I Shoot IDPA no issues. If there is a malfuntion it s already out of battery, so easy to pull back. It did not cost $200, it takes all the sillyness out 9mm gental recoil systems, one and done. I use a Devil Dog side charger to look cool and brace the stock on my body. Remember you start out with a chainber flag or already loaded? This video series if very good and informative, thank you. I don t have to do anything I just watch your videos and do what I do, great!! Thanks again J.

    The Maxim should be good for competitive shooters, but it's a different mindset. For the average non-competition/casual/plinker I'd suggest the Gentle Recoil System every time. Maxim needs to come up with a left-side camming charging handle like the LevAR. That would be a perfect match for the RDB and solve the first round charging pressure.

    Thanks for the video! I built my AR9 in Fall 2018. It was wild trying to learn all the info. I ended up with a completely useable and wildly fun Frankenstein build with an 8" barrel. It was onlybised for grins on the range. Fast forward to 2022 and now I shoot IDPA and USPSA a lot. All of a sudden i needed a legal rifle. So I built a 14.5" Faxon upper with a permanent muzzle brake to bring it up to 16". I then ordered a kyshot and proceeded to "tune". Well, it kind of faded into the background on me and i lost interest. Thanks for getting me excited again! I think I'll tinker some this weekend :)

    The G3 and PTR91 roller locked guns have a slight mechanical assist on the charging handle and such could set up on an AR. The lever that is attached to the changing handle provides a little leverage to break the rollers loose. It should not be too hard to design that into the AR15 charging handle. But then 32 lbs pull is not a lot for me, but still is more than it should be.

  • @Blowback9

    @Blowback9

    10 ай бұрын

    The G3, MP5 etc, handle pushes on the bolt carrier, not the bolt. This pulls the bolt backward, unlocking the rollers from behind, which is much easier. You're not pushing directly against the mechanical delay. With the Maxim, the AR charging handle pushes against the front of the bolt and has to directly overcome the mechanical delay just like a cartridge does. This is why they're so different in charging force.

  • @loquat44-40

    @loquat44-40

    @@Blowback9 There is a lever on the changing handle that provides a mechanical advantage for about 1/4" of travel. If the lever is not properly engaging on the sheet metal of a G3 it will require a lot more than 32 lbs of force 'to break' the rollers free. The rollers on the Maxim system are locked onto a guide rod. A sleeve that is fitting over the bearings locks them place; when it slides like a G3 bolt carrier, the bearing are unlocked. The rollers of a G3 lock into a barrel extension. It would not be difficult to design an AR charging handle to have an articulated lever to facilitate this. Go get a PTR-91 to observe what happens when you grasp that lever that is lying flat against the sheet metal of the weapon. When you grab it, it goes to a 90 degree angle with enough mechanical leverage 'to break the rollers loose' prior to you pulling the charging handle the full distance to move the BCG to eject what is in the chamber or to pickup a round from the magazine. The engagement needed to lock a 7.62x51 is considerable more than for a 9x19 load.

    @@loquat44-40 Thanks for the info abou the G3! Check out the Springfield LevAR. It's articulated, just on the wrong side. I tried it and it works, it's just awkward. Someone on ARFCOM developed their own which cams from either side. We just need someone to produce it profitably and it would fix the whole problem with the Maxim.

Mine is still pretty damn violent and hard to fight with any type of fast rate of fire. I really wanted this gun to work as a range toy. @Blowback9 Yeah, it is semantics, but if you're doing a technical video breaking down how it works and if it's effective, then the semantics matter. You say that you distinguish it in the first five seconds, but the entire point of my comment is that what you said is that it uses "bearings, not roller bearings." and go on to say that the MP5 uses "rollers" which ARE roller bearings and the bearings in the Maxim system are Ball bearings. It may be "just semantics" to you, but to me they matter. If you're going to do a breakdown on a peice of technology I believe that it is important to use the correct technical terminology...
