The love child of crime noir and heroic bloodshed.
For a Finnish guy (like me) Remedy has always been a big influencer in the gaming industry. They were the pioneers of making Finland and our games well known around the world, years before Angry Birds etc. In the beginning of the 2000's when Max Payne games were selling well around the world, we (still little kids at the time) made sure that every one of us had those great games to play. And we talked about them every day during school. We were so proud that a Finnish company could make games so great :D Those were the times, the good old days for the kids from 90's! :D

Sadly those glory days of finnish games are now behind and we're left with nothing but shitty mobile games ;_;

For me it was the OG Battlefront II and Mercenaries Playground of Destruction that made me love 3rd person shooters. They had no cover system, instead projectiles traveled "slowly" (well compared to other games) allowing you to dodge shots even if they were already heading towards you. It's a shame chest high walls took over the genre, I really liked that run-in-gun style of gameplay.

Hey, I keep seeing you around these parts.
The game easily holds up today, graphical and gameplay wise. One of the best shooters I've played.

4:33 I'm pretty sure the Valkyr-drug, the Ragnarök-club and the Aesir corporation are references to Norse mythology and not Greek.

Yeah I thought it was weird he said Greek, considering Greek mythology is generally very well known and involves figures like Zues, Poseidon, Athena, etc.

one of my favourite games. The storyline was great, spooky and lonely environment. Bloody hell storytelling and great voice actors. I've replayed this game so much
What I love about your reviews is that you give us the history of the game development process. Keep up the good work 👍🏿
I love the Raymond Chandler style of Noir storytelling in this game. The thing I love the most about this game is 3-D Bullets coming at you. Modern FPSs, is kind of like emailing bullets at each other with Hit Detection, but in Max Payne it's 3-D bullets, & they come at you fast. Max Payne is one of my Favorite games.
There is a quicksave option though, so no need for browsing trough menus. But generally, the review is spot on. I wouldn't complain about the graphics though. To me they look better than most games that came out even a year or two after this one. Textures are surprisingly sharp, and level design, as well as enemies, is fairly good.. again comparing to games from that era. Remember how GTA III had disjointed looking NPCs, same as Morrowind that came even later, nad Mafia didn't look as sharp as this game either (to compared to just a few). I've actually been playing the game in the last few weeks, just finished the secret base self-destructing level few minutes ago.
My all-time favorite video game. I think this game is where my love for detective noir storytelling came from. Absolutely incredible.
So glad to see this review! Love the trilogy so much and I'm super exited to see you cover the next 2 games!
I love your content, keep it up!
Your reviews are the best. Dont stop!
Ive gotta get this for my Xbox collection! Another awesome video... I cant believe the amount of research / history that you include introducing the games that you review. Keep it up!! #100K
Really looking foward to seeing your Max payne 2 review!
Im happy to see that you are doing Max Payne! One of the best games ever made. Continue the great work!
Great video as always! I'd love to see a midnight club 2 or total overdose vid too
Good work as always, love your videos.. 💯
Love your analysis and a bit of history tour to start off things. Looking forward to your review of Max Payne 2 which is my favourite in the trilogy.
Great day indeed, now this review is here! Been waiting for this one
Hope this channel reach 500k one day you deserve it, also have you ever played Vampire the masquerade bloodlines, its a underrated masterpiece (you do need the unofficial patch tho)
Criminally underrated game man. I love your channel
I live for these reviews!
Only 34k subs? This is ridiculous. Tier 1 content my dude, keep the good work.
I love Max Payne. Recently npught it on IOS and its great even on ipad. Also its great to see your channel growing dude
Man this game used to scare me when I was little. This game was great though.
Awesome work as always!
Such a beautiful heart-wrenching game. Loved the comic book aspect of it.
u have a new sub for that video , actually im completing the 3rd max payne :)
Just Subscribed, like your vids keep it up
Ah... Max Payne... I love the writing. I'd give my left nut for Sam Lake to release a noir themed book based off Max Payne. I'm a sucker for good metaphors. But after all... The rain was coming down like all the angels in heaven had decided to take a piss at the same time. In a situation like mine, you can only think in metaphors.
Great review as always.
Favourite game reviews on YT! Would love to see your take on the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Trilogy!
This is a game where you help Sam Lake kill his mother after she kills his family and tries to kill him many times.
Dunno if someone else mentioned it, but there is a third party widescreen fix for Max Payne and it's sequel, as well as other older games that lack proper widescreen support. Give "thirteenag" a search seeing as you plan on reviewing MP2. Great review btw, keep it comming.

It more than holds up. I've actually been playing it for the last few weeks and I can say it can teach lessons to many new games. The only thing really lacking is cover system which simply wasn't a thing in any game back in those days.

the only thing I hate about this game is that bullets seem to travel wayy too slow, you have to aim ahead of moving enemies at point blank range which is ridiculous, also sometimes enemies are just bullet sponges

@@Tipperito I'm one year later, but check the Max Payne mod collection (Accuracy, Camera, More) mod. It gives you the option to increase the projectile speed among other things if you wish, like gun accuracy, shotgun spread and a different camera angle. And you are right, the projectile speed, alongside the accuracy mod, completly improve the experience.
One hell of a game, also wish I could double-like this as you mentioned Death Rally - that game I used to play a TON as a kid.
The game that introduced me to my favourite band. Poets of the fall. The end credits (Late Goodbye) was incredible.
I got stuck on that part with the baseball bat as a kid lol glad I’m not the only one who had trouble with it.
You deserve so many more subs
Keep up the good work for us fans.
Hey ColorShed, really love your work, especially on your GT Series but also all of the others, even finding a gem I didn't know of before, Bully, just wanted to know if you will also take a shot at GT Sport?
What timing. I just started this for the first time yesterday
Amazing content my friend .. Keep going

I'm confused. I could have sworn you've reviewed this series before. I thought it was the reason I subscribed to you.
Love the video and your channel, just wanted to add that the game has Norse mythology not Greek. Love your reviews though!
I love this game. I remember sneaking into my big brother's room to play his PS2 back when I was younger.

The environment that got me hooked to this game, the dark appartments, dark alleys, junkies in bathrooms etc :D
awesome review
Was waiting for this
Always killing it 👍👍
ahhh one of my favorite games from one of my favorite franchises. I love them all equally even Max payne 3
I watched Seven last night, and I feel like Detective Mills has a similar look and storyline to Max Payne in this first game.
My dad used to play this on PC wow this is nostalgia
Fantastic editing! 8:32
@ 4:33 I think you meant Norse mythology. Liked the review.
I always fancy Max Payne for it's details. I love how a game from 2001 could be great as this
I love the franchise. Max Payne will be alway in my heart! Best part of the PC Version was/is the Mod Support, Like Matrix and KungFu Mod. Also appears in Max Payne 2! Thx for this good Review :)
Protip: Check the controls menu before playing a game. Quicksave/load and the separate shoot dodge/bullet time controls are incredibly useful here.
Plying this in my iPhone at 60fps and it’s amazing, I remember playing this when I was little on the family pc :p
I was 11 when this came out, had a sick PC with max graphics and dude was this a marvel!
Any chance a review for The Warriors is on the horizon?
Isn't there a quicksave and quickload option so you dont have to keep reloading saves on PC?
I’m 24 , when I was really young and had an og Xbox I had this game and I loved it so much. The nightmare scenes were scary but it was so good. I think I’m going to get it on steam to play again. Also what’s crazy is Iv never played max Payne 3!

I remember playing so much and getting good enough to run threw the nightmares and know exactly where to go . Maybe they are easy I don’t remember now lol
I got to the Max Payne games late as well, not playing the series until July of 2014.
I love James Mccaffrey raspy voice, i'm glad that R* didn't get replace him in max payne 3 and instead them even used his likeness for the character.
Love the writing for this game!
8:06 Have you tried iOS port? iOS 13 is about to support Xbox controller, I'm thinking about picking this one up on App Store.
So Max Payne had bullet time in mind before The Matrix popularised it? I thought The Matrix inspired that part in it's development, even if the movie released in 1999 and MP at 2001 (though their development years would clash from 1997-2001 I assume). Where did you take the Sam Lake quote from?
" I was already so far past the point of no return I couldn't even remember what it had looked liked when i passed it"
do you plan to review medievil series for ps1??
Good review! I played it on PS2 and remember having serious trouble with those platforming dream sequences. The analog control was soooo touchy that a 2mm correction would have Max just walk off the line and die. Again. These games are less fun when there's so many cheap deaths. But.. the writing and atmosphere was top notch, as was the voice acting. The story was a mixed bag. I remember the traumatic bits as being hard hitting, but the rest was pretty forgettable. Otherwise I think this review is pretty accurate. MP2 is definitely better! I played the PC version and it was considerably fairer in terms of difficulty and cheap deaths, plus with the improved graphics and more detailed level design, improved controls and moves made combat 10x more fun.
Dude, you found the second half easier than the first? Bro, I had it the other way around. Chapter 3 is insane
Can you do a castlevaina 3 review?
The most badass voice in gaming history
Max Payne has to be one of my top favorite games
Oh and Total Overdose is one you should do aswell
You should check out / play a game called John Woo's Stranglehold. Also bullet time and everything what a rollercoaster ride that game was.
Make sure to try out kung-fu mod when playing this again
My dad told me this is the last video game he ever played im surprised it looks this good
I remember playing "Max Payne" when I was younger and thinking the hardest difficulty was impossible after I read the player has limited saves per level and I literally had to save after every enemy or group I killed in order to progress on the *lowest* difficulty. But since you have to beat the game on each difficulty to unlock the next one, after I got through the game twice I actually decided to take on the highest difficulty *without using bullet-time* - and I actually pulled it off, usually saving only 3 to 5 times per level. Tho, honestly, the main reason I pulled it off was 'cause I realized how abusable side-jumping around the enemies was. XD
@dualberetta2755
2 жыл бұрын
I know right? That side-roll is the most powerful thing you had in the game imo
Dropped by here after hearing they're making a remake.
Always thought it was neat how game doesn't have a difficulty setting but adapts to how good or bad you are and your play style as you progress. I hadn't heard of that back then until this game.
@jeffmoen8563

It does have a difficulty setting.
So when is Max Payne 2 review coming out?
One of my favorite games of all time. Great vid as always colourshed!
I was wondering when u was ganna review Max Payne during the weekend 😂😫
Just beat the game. Awsome review !
i still play this alot mostly on my phone, got me into 1st person shooters ,actaully it was mgs
About to finish today and can say that most of the things are so true
James McCaffrey really was the perfect cast for Max. Goddamn what a stellar job he does.
The offical expert on rockstar
Max Payne 3 was the first I played in the series, and then I went for the iOS port of this game, and I enjoyed the hell out of it.
