Holloway was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and raised in Waianae, an area known for fist fighting. He is of Native Hawaiian and Samoan ancestry. Holloway's parents were heavy drug users, his mother Missy Kapoi being a crystal meth consumer who later recovered. His father, Mark Holloway, who constantly abused his mother, left when Max was around 11 years old. Max started training kickboxing in 2007 at the end of his sophomore year, aged 15, out of Team Ruthless, and went on to win his first amateur bout in the sport after three days of training. He graduated from Waianae High School in 2010.

Haven’t even finished but I have to share my gratitude at the Max Holloway video. Max is such a legend. My favorite fighter for the longest time. I remember taking the country bus from Honolulu out to Waianae when I was a teenager visiting Oahu just so I could see the hometown of the champ. Then watching him in Atlanta a year later. Goat human being.

Good for Max. It must be beyond amazing for a guy that grew up with such a dysfunctional family to have a beautiful family of his own. I can only speak for myself when I say it makes you appreciate them and want to fight for them even more. It's fighters like him and Dustin poirier who are positive role models and inspirations for kids and adults alike. In a time where you have all these idiots putting on an act like they are pro wrestlers it's refreshing to see real people. Imagine your a person like Colby (who people say behind the scenes is a nice guy) who lack enough personality to get noticed so you put on an act where you spew all this ignorance, hate, racism and sexism. It's bad enough that people are actually that way but to put on an act where you behave that way makes you that much more pathetic.
