Ilia Topuria (Georgian: ილია თოფურია) (born January 21, 1997) is a Georgian and Spanish professional mixed martial artist who currently competes in the Lightweight and Featherweight divisions of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). As of June 27, 2023, he is #5 in the UFC featherweight rankings
Topuria was born in Halle Westfalen, Germany to Georgian parents. At the age of seven he moved to Georgia with his family where he started practicing Greco-Roman Wrestling at school. At the age of 15 he moved to live in Alicante in Spain, where he started practicing martial arts at the Climent Club. In 2015, he made his debut as a professional in local competitions.
After starting his career with 4 straight submission wins on the Spanish regional scene and winning a belt in Mix Fight Events promotion. In 2018 he made his first international fight in Cage MMA Finland. In the same year, in May, he became the first Georgian black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu alongside his brother Alex Topuria. Months later he received the opportunity to fight for the Cage Warriors Bantamweight Championship at the Lotto Arena in Antwerp, Belgium. Ilia failed to make the agreed weight so despite winning the fight quickly, he did not get the belt.
In 2019 he signed with Brave Combat Federation. Ilia made his debut in the promotion in Bogota, Colombia, defeating opponent Luis Gomez in the first round by submission; which leads him to get the award for best performance of the night. On November 15, 2019, in Bahrain, he won his second fight in BRAVE by defeating Steven Goncalves by KO in the first round.

He can like a guys style for sure. The thing is JR was hyping him up as if he was the next GSP or some shit. Ryan Hall has top tier jiu jitsu and that's about it
When I first saw Ilia’s crisp combos and fight iq I knew it was only a matter of time before he was a title contender. Definitely a true mixed martial artist in its most pure form.

Pimblet is a braggart and a showman, I think he has too much influence or admiration for Mc Gregor, but there is 1 Mc Gregor and that attitude worked well for him in the UFC because he responded with victories, but Pimblet is far from being Mc Gregor's shadow. Gregor and that attitude he has does not serve or help when the results do not come later... he thought he was better than Topuria, but time puts everyone where they deserve. Sooner or later Topuria will be champion and maybe not now, but with his evolving attitude, ambition and desire he will undoubtedly be one.

as a Georgian Ilia is a big inspiration for me, he worked hard and got what he wanted. Great video, we'll see how it ends up with Volk

NOPE mate, he ain't excellent at BJJ and wrestling at all. He's solid at it, pretty damn good, but it isn't as high level as excellent, his pocket based boxing is excellent though except for MMA he is pretty damn open for kicks. Volk though, excellent at everything except pocket based boxing, well might be excellent at that too just didn't need to use it much. Will be a good watch though when they fight.

He will he is the only option and Volk wants to get that fight as soon as possible because he is already extremely old for a featherweight with 35 and he wants to fight Ilia while he is still in his prime and he knows Ilia is only 26 and will get better and bester with every month he waits and Volk also knows having Ilia on his resume will look really good in the future cause he knows Ilia is the future champ

Pimblet es un fanfarrón y un showman, creo que tiene demasiada influencia o admiración por Mc Gregor, pero Mc Gregor hay 1 y a el le salió bien esa actitud en la UFC porque respondía con victorias, pero Pimblet esta muy lejos de ser la sombra de Mc Gregor y esa actitud que tiene no sirve ni ayuda cuando luego los resultados no llegan... se creía mejor que Topuria, pero el tiempo pone a cada uno donde se merece. Tarde o temprano Topuria será campeón y quizás no sea ahora, pero con su actitud evolución, ambición y ganas lo será sin duda

I like this kid Topuria. I can see him as a future champion. He has potential.
Jack Della and Ilia have some of the best hands for present and future title contenders and they both deliver those crippling body shots straight to the liver . I'll put Adrian Yanez there too but with his head coach passing who was mainly his boxing coach is not the same, hope he gets the right coaches to bring him back in the picture. And people are giving Volk too much credit . Volk was once on the same trajectory as Ilia and have the same traits as him but Volks vast championship experience makes him a little favourite but make no mistake it'll be a close fight for either men , Volks endless gas tank vs Ilia's knockout power.

Complete casual take. Ilia and Jack are top 10 arguably in terms of boxing, but Yanez? Yanez never beat anybody legit, nearly got finished by Randy Costa and then when he faced a real competitor in Rob Font he got KOd, Font showed way better hands than him. Yanez isn't even top 20 in having hands, probably not even top 30.

And your take on Ilia vs Volk is garbage too. Ilia with his power might manage to catch Volk and win, but lets not pretend a close fight is the only likely outcome, Volk might dominate him easily. Volk was once on the same trajectory as Ilia, but the current Volk is way better than the Volk that fought Aldo, way way better. If Ilia doesn't improves his game he might get dominated hard, and there is no proof he's better than most top featherweights like Holloway, Allen and Rodriguez. Lets be honest Holloway would beat him up bad and I'm a Ilia fan.

what i LOVE about his striking, is his utilization of body shots. NOBODY hits the body as much as him. TOO many fighters focus on just headhunting their opponent. The biggest target on opponent is their torso, its the Center of mass.

No offense meant but Buckley has to first prove he can reach the top 15 then we can talk, only reason people are still talking about him is that spinning kick KO. As for Dober he's just out of top 15 too and his chin finally got cracked. Like what sort of documentary could the man even do about them? They aren't at a point in time where it's appropriate for it.

Whaouu, enjoyable Documentary ❤ The only sport i ever felt in love with is/was Boxing, and i am a casual in mma although i have been watching it for some years now along with my Grandma at house ; and it is my grandma who introduced me to Ilia Topuria : his last fight was my first time watching him and Boy his Boxing in MMA is so good, his philly shell is wonderful and works in his sport .. he remind me very much of a very old Argentine Boxer contender in the 1950's , classified #1 at the time and one of the greatest Punchers ever : Eduardo Lausse 🇦🇷❤️ Vamos Topuria !!! 🇪🇦 Por parte de un Franco 🇲🇫 Argentino 🇦🇷😉

Future FW champion for sure. I hope he can go the distance with Volk and win a round or two, but I can't see him beating Alex at 26 years old. It'll be a learning experience regardless, fighting a GOAT like Volk is something you cannot replicate.
