    Key note, don’t fly higher in high wind when it’s drifting. Get down low-chances are wind speeds are lower closer to the ground and that might give you a chance. Glad you recovered the footage but even better that it still flies. Great testament to the quality of DJI’s product.

    Glad he got it back and acknowledges some of the mistakes he made. But there are many more unacknowledged precautions that could have been taken. I havea manic mini and have never lost it (touch wood). Here's my checks: 1. Stick a label on the drone of your phone number [2. A Mavic mini now requires registration in the UK as it has a camera - so you also have to put your operator number on it - a rule that wasn't in place when this video was made] 3. Use the 'UAV Forecast' app to see forecast of wind gusts in your area. If gusts are over 18mph, don't fly. 4. If you get a Strong wind warning, lower your altitude - don't increase altitude. Wind speed increases with altitude. 5. If you've spent around £400 on a drone, spend £10 more to get a dedicated memory card for it! Don't put a memory card of precious memories in a flying lump of plastic that has an inherrent risk of being lost. 6. Put a text file on the memory card that contains your phone number and email address. If someone finds it, they may try to read teh memory card. 7. When flying away from you, try to fly into the wind. This means that when you fly back you will have a tail wind that will help it get back.

    Everyone here should check out another you tuber's video about his mavic mini crashing into the sea, lying on the sand next to the waves, swamped by sea water for 6-8 hours, then after being found later that day/night, and after a cleaning, flying again without problems. What a remarkable company and product! Great video and so clever at being able to more closely pinpoint the drone's final landing spot. This is a great video for teaching all of us both how to fly and how to back up flight info on your cell so you can better locate your drone if lost. Thanks again. Good luck with your studies. Really enjoyed this. Totally agree with you that MM is not designed for wind. Glad that you got her back. The best policy with a wind warning is to drop altitude rapidly and head home. Beginners forget that wind increases considerably with altitude. I have a work colleague intent on buying one and have tipped him off on this common mistake.

    Well, what I use in a stew is carrots, diced up and onions, Potatoes, coriander and a touch of salt and pepper. Put on a slow heat with beef or lamb cut up. I like to partly cook meat first. Add gravy granules after about 2 minutes, stir, then place lid back on the pan. Yorkshire puddings are great.. Place in oven on low heat, then turn up to make a bit crispy just before stew is done.. Put Yorkshires on a plate, then pour and place stew into the Yorkshire.... Pinch of Pepper over the top after is great.

    Lost mine for 1 year! Forgot to reset home on the GPS when flew it at a place about 30 miles from home. Drone got above trees, lost situation awareness due to wind and when I sent it "home", instead of coming back to my feet, ZOOM ZOOM it went heading back to home. A farmer found it in his field a year later and found me via the registration number and I got it back Only one broken arm and a quick rebuild and we're back good as new. But I'm way more careful now about when and where I fly it and always reset 'home' before we take off. Lesson learned for sure.

Glad there was a happy ending, and what a great review for not only the cautionary measures one would need to take with a drone in windy conditions, but also for the resilience of this little drone. I am trying to get up to Retail Courage to finally buy a DJI Mini. It would be my second drone, but the first one I had was not really anything fancy. So this would legitimately be my first.

    Great you got it back. I have learned never ever fly in the wind. I have apps telling me if it is safe, also wind speeds. Wind direction is very important. Flying with the wind behind you is fine, return to home can be another story with a head on wind. Many a drone has been lost as battery runs out of power on return, if too far away, trying to fight head on wind.

    That was some amazing detective mathematics that you devised to narrow down the search for the lost Mini2 drone based on wind speed and direction. Hearing that you walked right past the drone the day after it crash-landed, yet didn't spot it, inspires hope that my AWOL Mavic 1 Pro fitted with a jumbo battery and missing in action during a 12-mile Litchi waypoint mission last month, may yet show up since my phone numbers are scrawled on the chassis. The over-engineering of DJI drones is a thing of wonder, and seeing that muddied and repeatedly soaked Mini 2 flying perfectly after being subjected to the elements for weeks on end is testimony to DJI's design and manufacturing philosophy. Superb presentation by the way sir. You speak with the measured cadence of a seasoned raconteur, cutting to the chase with none of the usual KZread waffle. That'll be 5 quid for the free compliment.

  • @gamble67

    @gamble67

    4 жыл бұрын

    RTH usually has a high altitude setting to avoid obstacles, so in high winds that’s typically not an option. I’m sure the KZreadr is used to flying the bigger DJI drones that can handle wind. He made two fatal errors with this drone; 1, flying in wind; and 2, increasing altitude during high wind warning. ALWAYS lower altitude during high winds and when there are head winds to return back always use a zig zag pattern with micro drones. Great video, but obvious pilot error here.

  • @pdtech4524
    @pdtech45244 жыл бұрын

    Great video. I've flown my Mavic Mini in some quite gusty conditions, +16mph winds easily (watch my Triple Mavic Mini video or Warning Xtreme Wind video, both are filmed in very strong winds and show my Mavic Mini handling it fine), far windier than I feel is safe to fly any drone really! I usually fly in quite calm conditions, 10mph or less, it's no fun watching your drone get battered by strong winds or struggle to land! If the wind speed exceeds the max speed the Mavic Mini can fly at, it's goodbye Mavic Mini, those motors and that Lithium Ion battery just don't have the power to overcome much beyond +20nph winds. Remember at altitude, that 15mph wind on the ground, can be more than double!! ⚠️😯 I think DJI quote 18mph as the max wind speed it can cope with. Good job getting it back and it still works, always back up your footage after every flight. Things I learnt flying my Mavic Mini- Don't fly in strong winds EVER! Watch those wind warnings, reduce altitude helps. Keep a close eye on battery level, once you go beyond 50% there is a drastic reduction in power that can be used by the motors due to the very gradual discharge curve of Lithium Ion batteries! Always, always fly into the wind, that way if you get a problem and it struggles to cope with the wind, it will drift back to you! Watch the drones speed, if it drops and your still pushing forward, this should tell you it's struggling, put it in sport mode, lower altitude and fly back. If all else fails and you see it drifting away, press land but make sure your over land, before you lose signal⚠️ That way you have a better idea of where it landed Hope some of that helps but I guess you have figured out most of that by now?⚠️😎😁👍

    If this ever happens to any of you, try and lower the drone’s height while you still have a connection, wind speed and gusts are almost always worse the higher it is. If you still can’t fly it back at the lower altitude you might be able to just land it where it is so that you know exactly where to find it and may have the option to choose a spot that is as dry and flat as possible. My first flight on my old Pro Platinum I didn’t realize “multiple flight modes” was turned off in the settings(or even an option on the drone). I had it up in the air and realized it was being pushed away so flicked it to sport mode when it told me on screen multiple flight modes not possible and stayed it P mode. Well that freaked me out, but I somehow managed to remember to lower my altitude and I thought if I had to I could just land it on a sidewalk or someone’s lawn. Fortunately at the lower altitude after a few min here was a brief period where the gusts had died down for a bit and I was able to fly it back to me. Glad I’m this video he was able to find his drone back :) great video btw. Hope this helps anyone who may encounter this.

    Always check the weather before you fly and it's worth checking again once you're on location. The Mini is light and a breeze can blow you off course. If anyone has trouble remembering this: think of flying a kite. Where is a kite (which needs strong wind) having trouble to fly? Near the ground. Where is a kite always finding a stronger wind? Higher. A DJI mini likes the opposite of the kite. Always take down the drone when winds pick up. And never ignore a red warning message. Return to home (or safe ground) should always be the top priority when any red warning appears.

    Glad you got it back. Mine was lost for 6 months in a river and was recently returned to me. The drone actually recorded 15min under water! Video on my channel if interested in the story.

    Do you have any real sources for that claim that the S mode doesn't help in wind? I flew over the sea naively once (actually did that a lot before). Got 2km out quite happy with the speed (was getting wind warnings but the mini throws that all the time so you start to ignore it) and turned around but I was getting 1-2km/h. Freaked out a bit, started thinking about gusts that would push it out of my control area, etc Then I hit S mode and it flew back at about 15km/h average straight line in the wind. Very slow but landed with 20% battery. Usually where I live the wind blows at an angle never towards the sea but rather close to 90deg with the shore line. That day it was actually blowing out, lesson learned. Also now anytime I'm flying and get wind warnings I immediately go to S mode so it helps the RTH

    Next time try using a tool like UAV forecast. You can set parameters for your specific drone and see what wind speeds are at different altitudes

    I've been flying RC planes and quads ('drones') for almost a decade. I've only had one fly away - but I had my phone number taped the fuselage - a groundskeeper chap phoned me the next day, saying he had recovered my craft. He seemed a bit perplexed that I was flying things on his grounds (public field, but people can be weird), but the low tech simplicity worked in that case. I've actually just bought one of these DJI minis, now I'm terrified to fly it very far - although, technology at this price point has evolved a great deal, so here's hoping.

    One of the reasons I got Air 2. I still have Mini and fly with it, absolutely great little drone, but being that small it struggles with wind.

    Got one from Wish and lost it first flight in 1 mph wind. Launched to 15-20 ft adjusting trim to stay put but kept going. Not fully responsive to commands. Around 30 meters it started blinking = no signal. Supposed to be 100m range? Slamming down control but kept drifting. Unless that thing got real lucky and navigated through trees quite aways away like yours, it’s in the neighbors yard a couple acres over. And they can’t find it. So ya. Was really hoping there’s was a known defect so I wouldn’t feel so bad. 1st drone + 1st flight = 30 seconds => no drone. Ah well

    This is so cool! Your 2nd recovery attempt is like a proper plane crash recovery. It’s a miracle that you got it back and it still works. However, it’s probably not as reliable as a new drone with the corrosions in it. The small motors on the Mini have a fixed maximum power output, increasing the drone altitude doesn’t increase the drone thrust. Hence, when you fly in sports mode, you’ll see “max power load reached” because the motors can reach its power limit when the rear motors spin much faster than the front when flying forward in sports mode. A drone wind resistance also depends on the power of the motors. Mavic Air is similar in size to the Mini but has better wind resistance because it has more powerful motors. If you do encounter strong winds in the future, decrease the aircraft altitude instead, wind speed tends to increase with higher altitude. Also there’s a trick I learnt from a KZread video to fly your drone back when there is a strong headwind.

    Holy cow! What a drama...🤯 I am so happy you got the drone and footage back! I had several times the same wind issues and it drifted backwards to the ocean with 20 mph while I pushed it fully forwards in sport mode. I just thought "good bye mini". But then I had the idea that the drone should act like a sail when descending as it has an angle of attack... and it did! I was able to recover the drone with that manouver about 5 times when winds were much too strong and gusty. Also the winds near the ground are much weaker as every tree or object works like a wind brake. Cool that your predicted landing zone was exact. Regards from Germany 😁

    I've found that range boosting antennas work well. But he's right, don't fly in winds over 16 mph. The max speed on position mode is 18mph, so if you're fighting wind, best to go into the wind first so you don't have to fight it coming back. Common sense applies if folks let it. ✌️😂

    This is the main reason I opted for a Mavic Air 2. I took mine to around 300m up in the air in fairly gusty conditions and the difference was about 5km/h in speed when flying into the wind.
