Mavic Mini 4 Pro HLG vs D-Log M, high dynamic range

Ойындар

I was very surprised to see that at the same exposure settings HLG retains better detail in highlights when shooting high dynamic range video. However the shadow detail seems to retain more colour information and detail with D-Log M.
I certainly need to experiment some more as I created very challenging conditions for the drone, but HLG may just be better for those sunset shots where highlights matter!
I think that with D-Log M you may need to underexpose by at least 1 stop to stop clipping.
In the video here I was 0.7 stops under exposed to retain highlights using an ND filter. HLG was about right, maybe -1EV, where as D-Log M may need as much as -1.3EV or even -1.7EV.
I'd be keen to hear in the comments others thoughts on this as i'm new to the drone and its log format.

Subbed. Cool test. Do you have a video how you edit your HLG?

Thanks! I've not done a video yet on grading, but have a DJI pocket 3 also, so could potentially throw together how I grade. I use davinci resolve studio to edit. Keep an eye out for a video on this.

I'm interested in this as I like to shoot sunsets with the Mini 3 Pro in D-Cinelike and wondering if the Mini 4 Pro is worth the upgrade purely for more dynamic range... Nice videos BTW 🙂

Thanks. Its hard for me to advise as I have not used the mini 3. I'd suspect that dynamic range is similar, but the HLG & D-Log M profiles are easier to colour grade than the mini 3 D-CineLike profile. In fact D-Cinelike is 10 bit, and its moving from 8 bit to 10 bit that gives that extra dynamic range. But its a lot of money to upgrade and it depends if you need that extra latitude. I was upgrading from a mavic mini, and they are 4 years apart in technology! So it was an easy choice to spend a little extra on to get the 4 over the 3 as you also get the RC2 remote.

@@NatsWright Thank you for answering. I'm very much a beginner to drones but experienced with full frame DSLRs so am a bit spoilt when it comes to dynamic range and bit depth. I agree D-Cinelike is not great to grade so that's helpful info thanks again. Perhaps I should wait for someone to leak the specs of the Mini 5 Pro 😄

@@mouseylikesnuts6437 Well, DJI do release a new drone every 6 - 12 months. I'd suspect the mini 5 to maybe get a better camera, maybe from the mavic 3, but keeping it under 250g would be tough. Maybe they will give it the ability to have interchangeable camera modules, so you can opt for under or over 250g takeoff weight. The issue with video is that even Log is not raw, as in photos, but log is better than the the standard colour profiles. The main thing is that the Mini 3 has a 10 bit D-Cinelike, and its the fact its 10 bit thats important for colour grading. You can probably push D-cinelike more than you think, try using Davinci Resolve to edit, that way you can see the waveforms in the grading screen, and tweak it more easily The other difference I think is the mini 4 has more collision sensors
