Mauser "Zigzag" Revolver Patent Model and its Unique Cartridge

Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
The Mauser brothers' first handgun was the single shot C77, which they quickly followed with the C78 "zig zag" revolver, so named for the cam grooves on the circumference of its cylinder. What we are looking at today is the patent model submitted for the brothers' patent on the hinged-frame version of the revolver. It has a number of variations from the later production model. Most significantly, it is chambered for the original Mauser revolver cartridge, which was a scaled-down version of the 11mm Mauser rifle round - bottleneck and all. After the German military expressed a preference for a straight-wall cartridge Mauser changed the design, and only a very few revolvers were made for that first round. We also have an example of the cartridge itself to show you, which is as rare as the revolver.
Thanks to the Liege Arms Museum for access to film this for you! If you are in Belgium, definitely plan to stop into the museum, part of the Grand Curtius. They have a very good selection of interesting and unusual arms on display.

Except patents aren’t just for physical mechanisms You can patent a process for making meth. How are you going to put a physical model for a chemical reaction in front of people? Or if you want something more ordinary, a solar panel. Or a computer chip, so small, you need expensive microscopes to distinguish it from any other chip
@nehcrum

@@thomasa5619 You show how to use that process for making meth. And just because you can barely see it in the computer chip, you can still test it to see if it's there. It prevents you from patenting things that you actually have no idea how to use, just so that you can charge someone else for then coming up with an idea of how to actually use it. Cause the latter is what patents are for....

Think of it like this. You grip the barrel with your off-hand and use the thumb on that hand to pull the latch. Then with your main hand (the one you normally hold it with to shoot) you flip the grip upwards. Now you got easy access to the cylinder and can easily reload it using your main hand. Then flip the grip back down and grab the pistol grip and you're good to go. It's just that Ian can't let go of the pistol grip and so flips up the barrel (and the cylinder) instead.

Looks like a nice design. Break action revolvers are always interesting. You know, 10.5 mm works out to 42 caliber- wonder if the bullet diameter is at or near our .429". Don't have my COTW handy, but i imagine velocity was 700-750 fps or less, and a bullet weight under 200 grains. Hmm, breakaction revolver that breaks upwards rather than down is certainly in interesting choice. Was there a specific reason for this or did it just take a couple production generations of ergonomics design to switch to the break downwards style? I haven't held, fired or reloaded a real revolver (or any real firearm for that matter) in my life, but I'd image that reloading that revolver is a real PITA. Sure enough, with it breaking open to the top the spent cartridges will more or less just fall out (perhaps a design choice since that revolver doesn't seem to have an ejector rod or otherwise a mechanism to punt out empty brass from the cylinder), but then you'd have to hold the whole gun up by the frame/barrel to reload and then swivel the rest back down whilst still holding the frame at least vertical to avoid rounds getting loose and/or falling out the cylinder. A breakaction that swivels down instead seems MUCH more ergonomic: you uphend the entire thing to drop spent cartridges (with or without help of an ejector mechanism), then you can just hold the entire revolver as usual by the handle as you reload the thing and just snap it back against the handle to close, much less fumbling about.
