Thank you, I was messing around with my late grandfather's 1957 spanish mauser and when the bolt got stuck i panicked a little because I didn't know how badly I messed up. Easily fixed because of this video, very well explained!

You’re the man for getting this info out! Has saved me twice now, I’ll never forget that cocking piece notch, with 8mm Mauser the lip just wasn’t enough but a 7.62x54r round with a lip worked great. Thanks again and God bless you!

Thank you very much from Argentina. Here we love the 98 action (we call it 1909, the year our army incorporated it) and for the surplus market it is a rifle widely used by civilians.

Seriously man I cannot thank you enough. Just bought a turkish mauser yesterday and was trying to clean it today and my hand slipped and knocked it to the fire position! I thought I was sunk. I used a flathead screw driver instead of a casing but it worked nonetheless. THANK YOU!

One of the best explanations. I've seen somepeople rotate the handle anticlockwise and the safety clockwise to do the trick but this is more professional and less pain. Thank you very much

Great tip. I did this and got my safety back to where it’s suppose to be. Straight up. Here’s my issue. Put bolt back in. Switch to fire, squeeze trigger , pow.. then you still can’t return to safe , up. Have to take it out and do this again

The striker needs to be in the cocked position in order to engage the safety. No use in putting the safety on after one has fired the chambered round.... it's already safe! If I'm understanding correctly, If you open the bolt and close it again (in order to cock the gun), the safety should be free to engage. If that still doesn't work, the fitment between the cocking peice and the safety needs to be adjusted by reshaping the ramp on the safety. A gunsmith could do this, but trying a different safety might work instead, and is a cheaper option.

I tried the cartridge trick for about 10 minutes, but I must not be fit for the eastern front because my hand kept slipping and I couldn't push my finger enough to keep it spinning, so it would reset on me. Plus my hands hurt like hell afterwards. But, I found a pair of broken jumper cables and the prongs had a lip that fit just right into that slot, and I had something that was easier to pull on. So either way, you saved my ass man, thank you!!!!!

When I got my first K98 when I was 16 in 1997 before the days of KZread 🙂... I took my bolt apart THE HARD WAY by painstakingly unscrewing it in the fire position. I think I used a piece of wood and my fingers to push that piece up and out of that cam several times to unscrew it completely. I remember my fingers being super sore lol

I didn't have a 7x57 cartridge to use, I tried .303 and .270 but couldn't get it out. Looping a shoelace around the lugs, holding onto the bolt handle with the left hand while pulling the shoelace with my right hand was easy, I then just rotated the safety by pushing it against the edge of a table. Good info in the video, thanks.

wierd. i baught a 1908 brazilian mauser as my first hunting rifle. and it has an aftermarket safety with one 2 positions so i struggled quite a bit with unscrewing it since u need the boom boom piece to be all the way back. so i have just used my hands to twist the bolt back into cocked position.

3:36, a much easier way to do that is to use the rim on the back of the bolt and hook it to a nice flat surface, like a table (something that you don't mind getting scratched). Then pull the whole bolt carrier down and then push the safety up. You'll get a lot more leverage this way.

That notch is actually designed to recock the striker on a dud round. This keeps the action locked in case it's only a hang fire. Look at almost all military bolt action rifles of this Era. They all have a way of doing this.

  • @bartblom132

Makes sense i guess I know you just need to raise and lower the bolt handle (no need to slide the bolt back and forth) to to cock a mauser, but it would definitely hurt If the round would go off while you just raised the cocking lever lol

Have question. Not familiar with this rifle at all. Inherited one from my dad who has passed on. Great condition. I took out the bolt to clean yesterday. Not knowing the safety position rule. Took it out in the fire position. As of now I have the bolt back and the safety to the far right. I can return it to the slide this way. Should the safety rotate all the way back over? I can’t tell if it will because my scope is in the way. Thanks for any help. Really frustrated with the damn thing.

I'm having trouble visualizing your situation. If you have a local gunsmith I'm sure he can advise you and probably won't charge you anything. Even a knowledgeable clerk in a gun store could probably show you what to do. When the safety is all the way to the right the bolt can't be slid in or out, that is the bolt-lock position. Your scope situation is confusing me. I would say turn the safety to the full left(fire) position and it should insert into the action...if I am reading your problem correctly. If your scope is blocking the full function of your three position safety...that is not a good situation.

  • @gierhedd75

    @gierhedd75

    3 жыл бұрын

Your scope needs to be moved if it is interfering with the movement of the flag safety. The safety should be able to be set all the way to the left - as looking down the sights. This is the fire position. It should be able to stand straight up and down - for disassembly, and all the way to the right to lock the bolt and trigger in place (safe).

I've seen the video showing the technique you're reffering to. Rotating the cocking piece to compress the spring through a camming action, is quite difficult due to the lack of leverage. I have attempted it on 2 different bolts, and was successful. It is possible, but much finger strength is required. The British fellow in the video has a deactivated rifle. Along with the ground bolt face, locking lugs, safety lug, and clipped firing pin, maybe he also has a cut or worn out firing pin spring. Due to his nation's firearm laws, he may not be able to aquire ammunition in order to employ the method I've shown. (that last sentece was "just a little joke")

  • @mechanicstuff7474

Rotating it back by hand also does not address the issue of a flag safety not being in the vertical position.
