MAULED BY SHARKS - Sailing Maldives part 6
Mauled by sharks! - Sailing Maldives
Human's fear of sharks is not without merit, this apex predator terrifies the heck out of most people but different breeds of sharks have a different level on the scariness scale. The Maldive Island of Fulidhoo is one of the few places you can swim with dozens of nurse sharks, year round. We made a beeline to shark point, where the local charter boats feed the sharks to get them accustomed to human contact. This mostly harmless breed are used to snorkelers in the water around them so incidents here are few just don't provoke the sharks with excessive force.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

I wouldn’t say there is no danger from these sharks. Although they are 'mostly harmless' and we are not their food source, accidents do happen. Luckily, not to us 😊 Thank you very much for supporting our channel. The battery life of the GoPro 11 is one of its qualities. I should mention however, it’s terrible tendency to overheat. The battery gets shockingly hot. The GoPro then switches its self off; to stop itself bursting into flames no doubt. Not helpful when you are 50ft under filming the action.

Yeah well, so what do we kiwis do for fun.? Swim with sharks of course. Hey was it an optical illusion, or did I see you pass off the bow of what looked like a container ship, and caused the captain to give you a blast on the ship's horn.? Have reviewed it about three times, and looks like it. My apologies if this wasn't the case. As usual another great episode, from Cruising Kiwis. Thank you for sharing. Btw I missed out on $50m in lotto, by just 6 numbers. It's OK,. I'm receiving counseling. 😂 Many thanks for sharing your experiences. Love it. Keep em coming. Cheers from Aotearoa.

Years ago I remember watching an interview where the journalist and interviewee stood in waste deep water with a bunch of nurse sharks to prove how unaggressive they are. The journalists was nervous but the other guy kept relaxing him and saying he would be fine. Then one of the sharks bit the journalist on the arse. No shark species is 100% safe which is why I said they are 'mostly harmless'.
Absolutely wonderful video, it was great getting to see all of y'all, some beautiful water and beautiful people, I am kind of with Declan tho it would be somewhat spooky with that many sharks around, even tho they are nurse sharks, it would be my luck to find one that was in a bad mood and decide to take a bite out of me. It kind of looked like all of y'all had a little bit of spooky moment ever now and then. And I just bet Capitan Ivan did know where he was going, Lol. Loved those underwater shots, wish I knew of a different camera for you, but I can't hardly even use the camera on my phone. Got to share this, hope it helps. And having to watch this a second and maybe even a third time. Lol.

Couldn’t agree more Rachel, GoPro definitely needs to get their house in order. Have a GoPro graveyard myself. Even with their dive housing and the 10m depth they’re supposed to handle they just don’t seem to last very long. Recently invested in the Insta360 X4 8K 360 camera (and its dive housing) and have been mighty impressed so far. Worth having a look at.

Thanks Bernard. Hope you are on the mend. We did look at the 360 camera while in Thailand after trying Andre's camera when he visited us. However I think for now we might go down the Cosmo route. Like you we learnt the hard way to use the diving housing with a Go Pro. Unfortunately the 11 batteries overheat quickly resulting in the camera turning itself off mid action or it's other fun game is to turn to the photo only mode, but you never know what it's taking a photo off because the camera becomes unresponsive in that mode and no matter which button gets pushed. Removing the battery is the only way to turn it off at this point which is impossible under water. Fun and games.

Thank you for your support Dianne. We hear you. As a small channel we do have the odd click bait title (However, I would add that we felt this title was correct. Mauled can mean to feel and handle roughly, which is how the sharks behave, bumping into and rubbing up against us). The title and thumbnail are important to the lie of a video we are told. Both of which I am terrible at. The original title saw this vlog come in at 10 out of 10 for top views. 10 meaning the worst of the last 10 vlogs. So Rob made an executive decision to change the title. We apologise to those who watched hoping to see us ripped apart 😂

I buy always the new Go-Pro so last holliday I bought the Go-Pro 12 (just because al the accessories are the same of mine Go-pro 9). But actually I would rather switch to a DJI. Because of the broken Go-Pro 9 (Salt water problem?) and also the same problem you are experience with a not switsing off camera. I have to say the Go-Pro 12 is running so far good.
