Maul 'em with the Marshall Attack | Chess Openings Explained

Jonathan Schrantz teaches the Marshall Attack (sometimes seen as a gambit) in the Ruy Lopez. Black gives up a center Pawn to create weaknesses. See the original game where it failed, then see a modern improvement on the idea.

Thanks for the cool (and apparently well-rehearsed) lecture! The picture of Capablanca in the background makes it even more intense, like the Master is overseeing the presentation of his art. Congratulations.

in the shirov aronian game black is winning because the queen must retreat (or be captured), so 30. Qd1 hxg3 (you can take that knight right away with the bishop or save it for later because the knight can't recapture on g3, for instance 31. Nxe3 Nxe3 32. Rxe3 Rxe3 33. fxe3 Bxg3 and now black is checkmated if he recaptures on g3 with the pawn) so saving that BxN for later go right away with 30. ... hxg3 31. hxg3 and now the killer move 31. ... Nxe3 and the f pawn is overloaded, no matter what white does he loses a piece. 32. Rxe3 Rxe3 and notice how strong our white squared bishop is now it will force a checkmate. 33. Nxe3 Rxe3 34. fxe3 Qxg3+ mates. The losing move was 29. Qf3? as it loses immediately. White can draw otherwise if he plays perfectly but I think for a human it's going to be impossible to defend this position. White played too passively and even if he had not blundered with 29. Qf3 he would have lost the game anyway, nobody can defend so perfectly against such a strong attack. It's also a lesson for black in the marshall! Don't deviate from book. What I love about this Aronian game is how comfortable he is just playing the main lines. I think that's the right treatment for black. don't be afraid of book, go straight into it, book is great. Let white deviate! Check out this game between Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Peter Svidler a couple weeks ago: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 O-O 8. c3 d5 9. ed5 Nd5 10. Ne5 Ne5 11. Re5 c6 12. d3 Bd6 13. Re1 Bf5 notice how Svidler goes into a less well known line right on move 13 but dont worry book continues for another 4 moves. I think it was a mistake by Svidler to leave book early, the Marshall gambit theory goes on for 20 moves in the main line just go into it, you get a draw in your back pocket how good is that? 14. Qf3 Qf6 15. Nd2 Qg6 16. Bd1 Bd3 17. Ne4 Be4 18. Qe4 Qe4 19. Re4 f5 (out of book with f5) Black now doesn't have much of an attack, and white will win the ending with perfect technique. See the full commentary on chess dot com look for the Biel tournament, however ignore anything that Lagrave or Svidler says, you know they are saving their best theory for future games. 20. Re2 Rfe8 21. Bd2 Bf4 22. Be1 Nb6 23. g3 Bc7 24. Re8 Re8 25. Bf3 Re6 26. b3 Be5 27. Rd1 Kf7 28. Kf1 g6 29. Rc1 a5 30. c4 bc4 31. Ba5 cb3 32. ab3 Nd5 33. Rc6 Rc6 34. Bd5 Re6 35. Bd2 Ke7 36. Be6 Ke6 37. Ke2 Kd5 38. Kd3 h5 39. b4 Bd6 40. Kc3 h4 41. Be3 h3 42. b5 Ke4 43. b6 Kf3 44. b7 Bb8 45. Kd3 Kg2 46. Bf4 Ba7 47. g4 and black resigns. Beautiful ending technique by Maxime.

Sure you are right, it is trapped, but I don't see how you can take it. Looks trapped but safe. I think black can menage to free it bringing down the pawns (maybe the rooks too) before white can menage to attack it (he has to attack it with the bishop, and to do so he has to move at least 4 times, so black has here 5 moves to free himself winning a rock for his effort).

At 4:11 Johnathan says Nf6 leads to the Berlin endgame, but it's actually the main move -- the bishop being on a4 means that the regular Berlin idea doesn't work --when the knight retreats, it's not attacking the bishop anymore. But black can play b5 and get a decent position.

There is nothing wrong with Qd1. After ...Bg4 you can play the Queen back to d3 (if you want a draw) or you can play a move like Qd2. This is just a normal position with many options for both sides. Black has the initiative and White is a pawn up.

Rg1 Qh3 8. Rg3 Qh5 9. Rg5 Qh3 10. Rg3 Qh5 11. Rg5 Qh3 12. Rg3 the engine says 0 (like in "draw") right after the first black queen move obviously moving the queen to d4 on move 5 is better for black (-0.6 vs 000000) however if u want a draw as black u may consider the line above

    I hate to tell you this, but you are actually incorrect. Allow me to explain properly. The Berlin Endgame is reached after 1. e5 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. 0-0 Nxe4 5. d4 Nd6 6. Bxc6 dxc6 7. dxe5 Nf5 8. Qxd8 Kxd8 What's the difference between this and the line shown in the video? The subtle, but very important move a6 was played in the video, prepping black for b5. Also, Nd6 no longer comes with tempo against the bishop. The open ruy lopez is 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. 0-0 Nxe4 6. d4 b5 7. Bb3 d5 8. dxe5 Be6. If instead, 6. d4 Nd6? Black is no longer hitting the bishop and is therefore worse. The move a6 makes all of the difference!
