Mattias IA Eklundh / B.C. Manjunath - A Prime Time Conversation

Музыка

Had a lovely little Zoom-chat about Primality the other day, how the track came about, konnakol, prime numbers, frequencies and whatnot.

The true definition of progressive music is music that pushes boundaries…not some variation of dream theater, meshugga, periphery, etc. What you have accomplished with this song truly does PROGRESS the genre, fusing two very different sources together into something that’s awesome

It is so refreshing that you both appreciate the creative spirit of music and human connection -- you are able to come up with something unique and intriguing; really worth pursuing. Keep up the good work - no one can take your stories and storytelling away from you.

Have you tried to look into konnakol with throat singing / heavier voices? I've noticed that pretty much all guys that sing konnakol do it in the softest voice, which also feels a bit jarring when the music is heavy (like that part in Drip). I've experimented with throat singing / growling konnakol-ish syllables to provide odd grooves when going to a percussion jam (after getting tired from circle-breathing smoke-filled air with a didge) and it's a valid and interesting technique to play with.

Mattias - A very weird thing to say, but for some very odd reason, your voice/style of speaking in a lot of parts in this conversation sounds so much like Daniel Gildenlöw's (Pain of Salvation) - don't know if it's the Swedish connection but I really had to focus and listen in closely to make out the difference. 😀 And, of course, not to take away from this monster of a song you've put together with B.C. Manjunath - gonna spend a few months trying to break it down and decipher it. Good luck to me 😅

Haha, it's not that complicated really. As Manju says it's all about keeping track of the 16th notes. Ah, yes it might be a Swedish thing if Daniel and yours truly speak the same (I have a dreadful speaking voice... and singing voice too, actually. That's why I live in the woods! 😆)

May I ask you Manjunath, when (1:36) you say "when the frequencies match, even the simplest thing sounds amazing" . Please elaborate? And thanks.😮

Mattias, who are your guitar heroes or biggest influences?

It started with KISS and AC/DC but when I first heard Eddie Van Halen it changed everything. Then I got really into John McLaughlin and Django Reinhardt. Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen followed along with Jeff Beck and his divine intonation. That and many more.

@@mattias_ia_eklundh Ah, my guess was right :-) Yesterday I was listening to John McLaughlin and I thought, "Mattias must like him". Two insanely fast players with a taste for complicated eastern-jazz fusion stuff. But now that you've mentioned it, I can hear a bit of Jeff Beck in your style too. It could be an interesting video topic to go through your guitar heroes and maybe show a little bit what you've learned from each of them in particular. Part history, part education. Sounds like a Rick Beato Interview :-) Cheers.
