Matti Nykänen jumps 191m with the old style @ Planica (K-185m) in the year 1985!
After Matti in '85 Finland haven't won Planica.
Janne Ahonen has been twice on silver and Tami Kiuru and Matti Hautamäki has won bronze.

This was one of the coolest jumps in the history of this sports, I remember watching it when I was kid

He was such a champ. I most likely watched all of his 46 world cup wins + the Olympic wins, the World Championship wins and World Flying Championship wins live on TV between 1981 and 1989, every single one of them. In some of these event he'd beat the competition by a large margin. And the competition was tough - Bulau and Kogler, then Weissflog, Ploc, Parma and Ulaga, then Felder, Vettori and Opaas, and in the end Thomas, Fidjestol and Nikkola. Definitely the golden age of ski jumping. even though there have been some great champs since those times as well. Overall World Cup Winner (4 times), Four Hills Tournament Winner (2 times), Olympic Champion (4 times), World Champion (5 times), and Ski Flying World Champion (1 time), +countless 2nd and 3rd places at all types of competitions. He was always known as the bad boy. He reached for the stars at the age of 18 and the media was always on his case. He was harassed by reporters like no other winter sports athlete of his time. Later, drugs and alcohol did lots of damage, as did failed personal relationships. I always had a feeling he'd die quite young as a result of such a messed up life, but 55 really is a bit too early. RIP and thanks for all the great sporting memories.

Agree. He died the way he lived and his behavior caught up with him. I wonder if he ever sought treatment for alcohol abuse. Certainly the most elegant ski jumper of all time. RIP.

Uh that's how they jumped for decades, before the v-style was introduced. The fact that he jumped the length he did with that old style says plenty of what an amazing ski-jumper he was.

the most elegant (and best) jumper ever.
Nykänen said in a Finnish TV show that this was the greatest win in his career. Other jumpers were far behind him.

Matti Nykänen was a good skijumper and he is a legend why people are talking just of a bad side of a person (alcohol and shit aobut him) as a sportsman he was the greatest....
I would say it was Finnish:)Anyway he is still the best jumper ever.

I hope that I don't mix the stories up but I think Matti was totally drunk when made this giant jump. In his autobiography "to hell and back" he stated that once he and his manager emptied two dozen cans of vodka the night before an event in Planica. The moning after, while being still totally drunk, he set a new jump record. In the eighties, he still could control his drinking problem. later, he wasn't able to do so anymore.

to nie jest komentarz z 85 roku ;) w 0:24 wspomina o Matti Hautamaeki, a Matti urodził się w 81, także wątpie, żeby o nim wspominał, patrząc na to, że Matti miał wtedy jakieś 4 lata ;p

Raczej miało by to duży wpływ dlatego że skocznie były trochę inaczej zbudowane więc latano by bardzo daleko.
