    His obsession with "I wish I was married and had kids" like no what would make you think you wouldn't ruin that kid's life?? You can't substance any kind of relationship for more than 2 years (with men and women, platonic or romantic) and you can't take care or hold yourself accountable - what on GOD'S earth would that make a good parent and partner? Had he had a kid, it would be filled with "I couldn't take care of myself, that's why we have a bad relationship, but they didn't try hard enough etc etc" crazy he's like 50 and is so immature

    Why do you think he never married or had a child with someone? I'm sure a lot of women would have had his baby. He wasn't stupid, he knew he couldn't do it in his condition. Doesn't mean he still didn't long for that.

  • @nana8286

    I get what you're saying but in the books it really doesn't sound like he didn't have kids because of his condition - it sounds like it was just a coincidence and had he had kids, it would've fixed everything. Props to him though if it was a factor on his decision - but I read the book cover to cover and he doesn't mention that @@lilly5157

    what i find weird is that he didn’t even mention 17 Again, yeah it’s not the greatest film ever made but it’s basically how his life turned out as well as his younger counterpart playing him in the movie also struggled with addiction very publicly. it’s probably safe to say that Zac during the time was probably more famous than he ever was so that may have something to do with it, but it just goes to show that he’s not the only person struggling with these addictions. the whole Keanu thing is weird too considering Keanu was extremely close to River Phoenix and has talked about him very lovingly, Matthew is probably jealous of that friendship. Keanu has also been through so much in his life with losing his daughter and again the mother to his daughter a few years later, even if he’s “joking” about the whole beef thing it’s sick to act like he’s had a perfect life and there’s no reason for him to be alive. the reason being is probably because both of these men have had successful careers as well as being known as heartthrobs which is probably the only way Matthew views them.

    I would disagree that Zac was more famous than he ever was at that time. He was famous with 8-18 year olds (and I fit in that grouping) but not so much with adults and friends was HUGE and bigger than HMS ever was. I do think you make a good point about the dual addiction thing. Maybe it doesn’t fit in his narrative to talk about another person in the throws of addiction or maybe he was just on set so little/maybe so out of it at that time that he straight up doesn’t remember it

    This is a pretty wildly toxic comment section. The guy is definitely not a role model of sorts..but hes an addict who had minimal self worth for himself for years and is producing a book that he's trying to inject some level of humor in to make it a bit more readable and relatable to most who see him as chandler. That may have not landed for you but putting the guy down in this light is crazy.

  • @genechowder

    I totally regret reading it! It's ruined Chandler for me lol. He just comes across as such an asshole that blames everybody for his problems apart from himself. Very selfish and odd guy that sounds a bit creepy with women, especially Jennifer Aniston. Gutted lol but glad he is sober and hope that book somehow helps others although I've no idea what's helpful about it. He has far too high an opinion of himself and his achievements to a narcissistic level. Anyway I loved the podcast ladies x

  • @CarSVernon

    @CarSVernon

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I would advise people who like Chandler to not read it. To me it seemed more like he just never had much to offer and that because of his extreme drug addiction he couldn't learn to grow. He still sounds like a child basically and the book sounds like a laundry list that he had to get out in the open, almost entirely about everything bad and very little in between, like going in depth about his work. Even the 'inspirational' stuff at the end feels like motivational postcard quotes level deep. I liked Friends a lot, and am old enough to remember when it ended. A LOT of people were really rooting for Perry, he topped a lot of polls asking who ppl were looking forward to seeing in other things the most. Aniston had her rom coms, Schwimmer always did his own thing, Kudrow and Cox had a lot of other TV/indie movies, and poor Leblanc was stuck with the spinoff so no one was looking forward to more from him, but he bounced back. Also the fact that a lot of ppl in Hollywood had addictions, ppl assumed he had some trouble but was now done with it, so it's pretty depressing looking back to see that in reality, the addictions were almost his entire post-Friends life and all the endless promising shows he tried were cancelled. It's a bummer regardless of the fact that he doesn't come across well in the book. Mostly I'd say it's hard to relate to Perry, and I don't think he gets that. His parents just don't seem bad enough to warrant getting all his issues dumped on them, he is from a privileged family, he won the TV lottery, the endless houses he has put up on sale we should be so lucky to ever own, so yeah it does sound like ungrateful complaining that is not going to go over well especially these days. The worst though is that it's hard to believe that he won't just relapse again except his health has been so shot that I don't know how many times he would be able to make it through.

    While I agree with many of your points I do feel like your assessment is overall lacking in depth and maturity. It’s what I would expect from younger people-but still disappointing. For example-his comment about Keanu was in no way that he “wanted him dead” which you repeat multiple times. His point was that he didn’t consider Keanu to be as talented as River Phoenix. I think you purposely over exaggerated some things-or maybe it’s simply that you just don’t understand it yet. He also never made fun or talked poorly about people with ostomy bags. He simply didn’t want to have one himself-most people in their right mind wouldn’t. He’s allowed to not want that life. Also-when he said that Cameron Diaz was “instantly stoned”-he meant that she froze from clearly not being interested in him….not that she was high on drugs. Perhaps it would have done you good to listen to the book narrated in his own voice if you had a hard time deciphering even that figurative language. You really come down hard on him for things that went over your head. What you read as arrogant is actually him making fun of how stupid he was many times. You also make fun of his “core wound” with adult logic. But any adult would know that a six year old would not sit on the plane rationalizing “well it’s the 80s”. They would just remember feeling scared and alone which is what makes it a core wound. But either way-he was clearly an imperfect man who is now gone. And you are forever on record as having laughed at him. For girls who criticized him for not coming across as a kind person, you really need to assess your self righteousness and snotty attitudes. Just snotty 12 year olds, that’s how the two of you sounded about this man. You honestly owe it to this man’s memory to re read/re listen and update your review. You didn’t pay much attention to him at all. This is just criticism for your own clout. Sounds like you held on to some resentment that he said no to you on Raya….because I can tell that you definitely would have gone out with him if he had asked.

    100 % Agree. Lacks complete empathy and understanding. This is what is wrong with society. It is HIS story. If you had have listened to his audio and interviews he had done after the book for more insight, you would have not been confused at certain times. You can tell he is extremely embarrassed about the trajectory of his life and how difficult it was for him to release this memoir, but he did it so other addicts could have some hope. I've dated an addict, they are the hardest on themselves and very self deprecating. It''s a very complicated, heartbreaking experience, so before you go judging people, maybe be mindful of empathy.

    I am a "Friends" fan. I watch re-runs whenever I can and enjoy them every time. THEN Matthew Perry dies and I am scared it will put me off the Friends comedy series forever. I feel Chandler was a great character and I want to just remember that body of work - not the addict of Perry. I hate addictive type people. We always have to feel sorry for them. We always HAVE to believe that their problem was not entirely created by them! Yeah, your childhood was not up to your liking. Whose childhood ever is? But that was decades ago. Also, how difficult is it, to just NOT DO something? Sorry, not sympathy there. I really did not know Perry wasn't married. That is a big red flag for me. What the hell is wrong with him? Did he enjoy his own company too much? Or was he in love with a blurred haze of alcahol or chemicals? The average person enjoys getting buzzed once in a while to let one's hair down, but enjoys a clear mind for the majority of the time. How anyone can want to be blitzed all the time is beyond my comprehension. I am still bummed out at him for being gone. I just wish he could have solved his problems. Hopefully, one day (maybe, when AI gets real good - who knows?) mankind will possess the knowhow to cure (not just help) addicts. Obviously, the 12 step program is JUST not cutting it! RIP Matthew Perry. Thanks for the many laughs. I will always appreciate you for those.
