Mary was furious when she strode in. Her smirk says it all. And Matthew was completely smitten. The very definition of love at first sight. Then, he shook his head, befuddled when he saw Mary cutting the sharp retort and go, and then he was like, 'Good heavens, what have I done?'
Matthew Crawley is one of the most endearing characters ever to grace a TV series. Such a fine young man. Who wouldn't love to have him as a friend, a brother, a husband, a father? Beautifully portrayed by Dan Stevens.

@@desertrose00 he was awestruck by Mary who was a beautiful high class girl he probably had never met before. Class difference is a big reason. It helps that Mary is beautiful, stylish and smart. Men usually see that first and when he found out how she interacted in her family. It would probably be too late. He was either blinded by love or chose not to see. But he is a good man. There is a consistent message of being or finding “a good kind man” in this show. A good man/woman is a school. That’s how Mary becomes a better person refined by the relationship. That’s what makes this show more interesting than others as a lot of shows nowadays are typically bad man/good woman as protagonists and in reality there are more good women than good men.

@@madapigi1 People have the tendency to be very harsh to Mary. I see it differently. If it was a contemporary series and she refused him to work on her career, people would praise her for being a strong female character that puts herself before any man. She would be a role model. But that is exactly what she did. For women in her position, their social status was their career. The only career they were allowed to have. And she was very independent, femminist character in her own way. More than her sisters, despite the series not showing it very evidently. That's why she was my favorite, because she had no naive dreams like her sisters, she was very realistic. Being the law fair, she would inherit her father's title and she knew she would do well, but here comes a stranger taking her family's inheritance (Matthew wasn't happy about it, but still came and took his place, so from what she knew, it could have been just playing nice guy.) and the only way for her to stay in her own home was to marry the guy, who was just months before far beneath her. For a strong woman like her it was humiliating. Accepting him with open mind would realisticly never happen. And marrying him without being the heir would mean giving up everything she worked for her entire life (Those women built their social careers from before being even born). She didn't refuse him absolutely, she needed time to think it over, but he wanted her to decide immediately. She was a realist and just like I can't picture myself giving up my job and leave everything to be some man's wife in 3rd world country, that decision was equally difficult. Just because she had the brains to think about it before hastily saying yes and then not being able to live like that, that doesn't mean she didn't love him enough or deserve him.

@@tsevca thank you! Finally! Sybil might have been the one with more liberal ideology (though I hate how they killed her off without having her achieve something) and Edith might have had the most feminist arc, but Mary was the more strong and independent one, right from the start. I don't get most Mary criticisms, especially in the early seasons (the last season I felt that they kind of butchered her character to give Edith a lift, though why they couldn't have evolved the relationship between the sisters and have them work together, instead of the mess we got, I'll never know).
@tsevca

@@QuarterLifeCrises You know why the criticism? Because people are generally unable to judge historical shows with any consideration to the setting. They always only see it from the modern point of view. It's almost a new way to judge the quality. The better the authors capture the views of that period, the angrier reactions.

Little bit of a mistake with the skirt, though - the actress is clearly wearing a sidesaddle *apron* at 3:38 (for safety) where it's plain to see her boot and the stirrup, and the rest of the 'skirt' of her 'habit' behind her. The fist minutes are SO important to a new series catching on. And Michelle Dockery delivered for Lord Fellowes in spades, here. She makes crystal-clear to us who Lady Mary is, IMMEDIATELY. It’s what Michelle did between her lines that created intrigue for me. I sat up and took notice after she dropped that proverbial mic in the drawing room. I really like lady Mary’s character. She was a flawed character. Aren’t we all flawed in someway? We all can be good for some people but not good for others. Mary was caring and loving towards the people whom she loved. She was practical and always had internal conflict between her mind and heart. Being the eldest she had big responsibilities and was raised to be like that. She was traditional and loyal towards Downton like her father. Ppl had high expectations from her. On the other hand Edith and sybil were free of those estate duties. They had lot more freedom. Loved Lady Mary♥️. She never portrayed herself as weak to garner pity from other ppl. I like that strength in her. She rather showed her as cold than looking vulnerable. Michelle Dockery did full justice to Lady Mary’s character. Her voice and body language…everything was spot on.
I wish I bring up my son to be like Matthew . Such mannerisms , elegance , calmness , style ...... I used to hate Posh lifestyle but Dowtown abbey managed to push it down my to inner soul to accept that culture and mannerisms is one aspect of posh lifestyle which makes life little exciting . Dressing properly , eating properly, behaving and speaking properly are some things which adds flavour to life...
I can't count how many times I've watched this scene and every time I'm thoroughly entertained.
I was only privileged recently to have access to DA via Netflix. I was skeptical but curious as to what all the hoopla was about. I was hooked from episode 1.
